The 2000–01 S.L. Benfica season involved Benfica competing in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal. Benfica qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing 3rd in the previous Primeira Liga.[1]

In the Primeira Liga, Benfica started with a loss against Porto plus a draw against União Leiria in the third day put pressure on Jupp Heynckes. A further loss against Halmstad in the UEFA Cup and Heynckes was sacked before the end of September 2000.[2] João Vale e Azevedo named an young coach as he replacement, José Mourinho.[3] He didn't have an immediate impression but by late November, Benfica had vastly improved. After a 3-0 victory against current champions Sporting, Mourinho demanded a contract extension after threats to his job by new President Manuel Vilarinho which favored historic manager Toni. Vilarinho didn't yield and Mourinho resigned.[4] Toni replace him [5] and Benfica kept on a good track, including rising to second place in early February 2001, but only two wins in the last 12 matches saw Benfica drop to 6th. It is to this day the club worst ever finished in the Primeira Liga and the first time that Benfica missed on european competitions.[6]

In the Taça de Portugal, Benfica reached the sixth round, before being trashed by Porto in the replay, after a 1-1 draw at home.

In the UEFA Cup, Benfica was dispached by lowly Swedish team Halmstad, 4-3 on aggregate.

This season is also notable for the change in Presidency, when on 28 October 2000, Manuel Vilarinho defeated João Vale e Azevedo on Benfica most contested elections.[7][8]
