Notre Dame is one of six independent schools in NCAA Division I FBS in 2013, along with Army, Navy, Brigham Young, New Mexico State, and Idaho. Therefore, Notre Dame has more flexibility with regards to scheduling because it is not committed to playing eight or nine games within an athletic conference.[1] With the announcement of a move to the ACC in all other sports except hockey and football, Notre Dame has an agreement to play five ACC schools per season in football.[2] This leaves future schedules subject to change to accommodate 5 usually different ACC teams per year on a 3 year rotating basis.[3] Some information suggests currently scheduled and contracted games with ACC opponents Boston College, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Miami, and Wake Forest already on future schedules will not be altered.[4] Notre Dame traditional yearly rivalries expected to continue long term include Southern California, Stanford, and Navy.[5] The yearly Michigan series has been recently canceled beyond 2014 but is expected to be renewed in some fashion sometime in the next decade.[6] Current long term contracts still exist with Michigan State and Purdue.

Notre Dame athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, has stated that 2 away ACC games would coincide with the even year away Navy football games and 3 away ACC games would coincide with odd year home Navy football games.[30]
