Kharan (Urdu: خاران) is a town in Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan. It is located at 28°35'0N 65°25'0E with an altitude of 692 metres (2273 feet).[1]

Tribes include Mohammad Hassani, Siapad, Yallanzai,Dagarzai, Nousherwani, Kubdani, Essazai and Malangzai.

History

The state of Kharan was established in about 1697 CE as a vassal state of Kalat, a status which remained until 1940. On 17 March 1948, Kharan acceded to Pakistan and on 3 October 1952 it joined the Baluchistan States Union. The state was dissolved on 14 October 1955 when most regions of the western wing of Pakistan were merged to form the province of West Pakistan. When that province was dissolved in 1970, the territory of the former state of Kharan was organised as Kharan District of the province of Baluchistan (later Balochistan). Kharan was biggest district of Balochistan up to 2007, then it was divided into two parts, District Kharan and district Washuk.

Government

The district is administratively divided into the following tehsils:[citation needed]

       Sarawan
       North City
       South City
       Raskoh
       Toumoulk
   Sar Kharan, comprising two union councils:
       Joda-e-Kalat
       Jamak

Demographics

The Population of the state was mainly Baloch tribes mainly, Yallanzai,Dagarzai Kubdani, Qambrani, Nausherwani, Essazai etc. . Nausherwani family has ruled over Kharan for more than two centuries. Their first ruler was Abbas Khan Nausherwani and last ruler was Habibullah Khan Nausherwani. Azad Khan Nausherwani, a prominent leader, belongs to this family. Castle of Kharan is a place for tourists, where ruler used to live. The population of Kharan district was estimated to be over 2,06,909 in 2011.[citation needed] Over 99% of the people of the district are Muslims. Hindu also live in Kharan. [citation needed]

Climate

Kharan is very hot in summer season and moderately cold in winter. Rainfall in Kharan is low. Dusty and gusty weather also affects it in summer.
