Adventure Motorcycle is a type of motorcycle identifiable by a unique set of features like a bolt upright, dirt bike like, riding position, a tall seat height, long suspension travel, a windshield, wide bars, engines optimized for low and mid range power delivery instead of top end peak power, and are powerful enough for easy long distance highway travel. Engines displacements are usually in the range of 650cc to 1200cc.[1][2]

Most but not all adventure motorcycles have some off pavement capability. Pavement travel is where bikes in this category are designed to spend most of their time however. The pavement/off pavement bias varies with model. Adventure bikes are too big and heavy to be ideal for difficult terrain or trail riding but are capable on surfaces like dirt and gravel roads. Adventure bikes are ideally suited to a mix of urban riding, back road travel, touring, bad roads and sometimes travel on dirt/gravel roads. .

There are many variations within this category. Some bikes have no off road capability and are in effect upright, comfortable sport/tour motorcycles while some have significant enduro capability.
