Sir Alan Mansfield was born in Brisbane in 1902 and educated in Sydney. In 1958 he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). He became a lawyer and, after a varied career, including representing Australia on the United Nations War Crimes Commission, he was appointed Governor of Queensland and Chancellor of the University of Queensland in 1966. The Mansfield family had land in Gumdale and Sir Alan lived in the Mount Gravatt area for many years

The Suburb of Manfield which is located in the city of Brisbane in queensland Australia was named after Sir Alan.
