Comment: ClueBot is highly overaggressive on John Pistole and reverted a legal analysis edit. Hardwiring bots to defend viewpoints (what would be the viewpoint here, that TSA criticism is not allowed while the TSA page is semi-protected???) is an abuse of the purpose of bots.
Discussion
The bot does not defend viewpoints. It has no concept of what viewpoints are. This false positive occurred because it contains statistical traits usually found in vandalism. More instances of similar edits in the dataset would help prevent this kind of false positive. Crispy1989 (talk) 01:09, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

I went to delete the vandalism and put in a correct definition of deep tendon reflex (a neurological test utilizing reflexive muscle movements) and submitted it to have ClueBot immediately revert it back to the previous vandalism and report me for vandalism myself.

ClueBot's ability to flag for "vandalism points" should be removed until its sensitivity is checked.

FYI, Hulu.com has a system where it does not allow you to post certain words. Their system is difficult as it does not list what the problem word(s) are. This may be a useful tool in handling revisions/ reports. Maybe give 24 hours to make the necessary corrections before automatically removing information?

Comment: I believe that the article's goal is to simply inform people about this video game. The way in which the entries for 1 NPC (Hawkins) and 2 races (Kai and Tosc) were written before my edit, the unwary reader wasn't warned for spoilers. Thus, someone who is potentially interested in this game for the storyline would be instantly put off by this rather blatant display of storyline knowledge.
This is a shame, as the video game is definately worth checking out. Not knowing what will happen next is part of the enjoyment.
I find it discouraging that a well meant edit on my part leads to an automated revert and a warning on my talk page. I hope this can be corrected.

The reason is that I think there's a NPOV issue here. It's not an established fact that they are a far-right group because:
1) They deny the label and actively discourage racists and fascist to join.
2) Traditional far-rights groups strongly oppose them, as seen in their online forum comments.
3) They have a Jewish and a LGBT division, which contradicts all known far-right rethoric.
4) The new head of UK police domestic extremist units, Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Tudway, also denies their far-right character.
5) Their opponents, such as the UAF, left-liberal multiculturalist groups and Islamic groups, have an interest in sticking the far-right label on them.
So I think my edit is justified.
Thanks

Comment: I have been sitting with Navy and Marine buddies this evening and we noticed that AYFKM, WAFI, and SNAFU, three of the most common Marine, Navy, and Military slang terms were not included in the Military Slang article, so we added them to Milatary Slang. The bot caught that as "Vandalism" .
After doing further investigation, we found that there was a wiki dedicated to actual slang words and Ackronyms for the Marines. We figured that perhaps we had simply erred in placing these terms in the generic page. So, we focused our attention on correcting the Marine slang page. To whit, we added AYFKM.
AYFKM - pronounced EYEF kim is perhaps the most common slang term we all heard in Afganistan, Iraq, and basic training.
It stands for Are you FUCKING kidding me?!? In context, we all said of the bot taking this out of the Marine Slang page... AYFKM.
SNAFU, of course, is already in that wiki.
WAFI - stands for What a FUCKING idiot! In this case, we, as well-informed Marines, believe that the bot is a WAFI, for taking out AYFKM.
As we recognize that many who would be labeled WAFIs go about vandalizing Wiki pages, we understand the need to have a bot take care of things. However, if our constructive addition of AYFKM to the marine page counts as such in the eyes of your bot, then perhaps you should leave the policing of the Marine Corps wiki pages to our BELOVED Corps. We are the FEW, The PROUD, the MARINES. Do not fear, we can protect America, our allies, and our own wiki pages.

As such, we added"

I didn't like that phrase, as I knew exactly what sort of French food they were referring to, and I thought they should either be more specific, or just leave it out of the text altogether. It looks clumsy in the context.
They were referring to Roquefort cheese and this was enjoyed first thing in the morning by the woman in this movie. Obviously an acquired taste as roquefort is known for being a particularly strong blue cheese.
I know this because I just watched the movie.

Comment: Hey, first of all I congratulate you on using artificial neural networks.
I made an edit and I have written at the top of the page - for someone to tag the article as in SERIOUS NEED for rewriting. It was possibly vandalized. Anyhow, quality was abysmal.
So, if we are already here, you can tag the page and don't revert this change.
Thanks for the support, volunteer!

Comment: I'm a new contributor, still learning the ropes somewhat. I was gradually updating the page for Georgia Fair as their notability is more than sufficient to meet Wikipedia standards. The page simply lacked any information.
I guess ClueBot expected me to complete the entire update coded perfectly in one hit, as formulated in the sandbox. I obviously didn't manage that.
But I can assure you everything I was doing was entirely constructive and I hope it can be reverted back again so I can continue my work.
Any comments or advice to avoid this in the future are obviously welcome.
Thanks.

Very much a false positive, IMO. I can't see why cluebot picked on this one. Also, this is another case of poor same-user-sequence reverting as discussed elsewhere on this page. -R. S. Shaw (talk) 23:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Comment: Clearly a bold edit, giving a plausible justification in the edit summary for the removal of large amounts of text. Article has already been tagged as having reference problems, and the URLs in the removed references are not suggestive of reliable sources. Would require investigation by a knowledgeable person to determine whether it is an appropriate edit or not (I don't know), not an automated tool.

Comment: An interesting case. It looks rather credible that the reverted edit added correct information, i.e. that Jeremy Auger indeed uses the nickname Jezza, and created his own article. Looking at the contributions of the IP editor, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's the same person. Possibly the edit wants to be reverted simply on the grounds that the Jeremy Auger article ought to be deleted. But it is certainly not simple vandalism.

An unlogged editor added an external link. The link is hosted by a computer game "cheat" site. However, the page linked is an interview with the article's subject. The link appears to meet the criteria of Wikipedia:External links. The bot reverted the edit as "possible vandalism". The original editor is unable to comment here because this page is semi-protected. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:24, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Comment: I think deletion of my edit could not have been an act of an innocent agent like computer. I fear this was some human agent who did not wish me to expand the article in a constructive way. This could have been only possible if somebody not knowledgeable enough to to be an 'admin' has become so, and is in fact himself a 'vandal' kind of person in disguise. If this happens again, I will stop contributing / editing Wikipedia. I spare time for your site with great difficulty, and the vandal in your computer/ admin wastes that.

All references are reliable sources such as Billboard.com, Discogs, The Guardian, etc. However, I can see why the bot might have assumed it was vandalism. If a bot can make assumptions.

Comment: Cleanup and rewrite was needed, so I cleaned up by deleting overlapping topics, for example Sampling, and made the structure more clear, and changed the introduction. I also added some other parts about how to reduce non-response and how to make good survey questions. Most importantly, I added more literature and citations because a lot of what was written was clearly from the book of Ader et al, but there was no reference to it.
Therefore, I think this cleanup and rewriting was really necessary.

Comment: This seems a good faith though clumsy edit. The school has 238 pupils. Saying it has 300 is not vandalism. Does the editor's previous history (2 out of 2 previous edits were vandalism) affect Cluebot's thinking? Their next, 4th, edit, was also mis-labelled as vandalism, this time by a human, but possibly one affected by the sight of 3 vandalism warnings.
I don't know the editor and only looked at his/her edits because the first one was to an article on my watchlist.

I was able to then undo Cluebot's edit and get the page back to how it was but the point is that Cluebot flagged my undo as a false positive so I'm mentioning it.
If this is confusing, just check the page and check the offending version and you'll see exactly what's going on (and why it had to be fixed quickly).

Congratulations on the de-orphaning that article, but in my opinion you should not have placed that message in the article. That is what we have the edit summary field for. --Tjibbe I (talk) 12:22, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
- This is sort-of a borderline edit. It's an edit that probably should be reverted (as that message is not appropriate there), but it's not vandalism, and was made in good faith. Unfortunately, there's not a good way for the bot to distinguish. Crispy1989 (talk) 12:28, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Comment: This anonymous user vandalized the article; this different anonymous user removed the vandalism. ClueBot NG reverted the edit that removed the vandalism, thus re-introducing the vandalism into the article.
Discussion
This is a pretty serious failure by Cluebot NG, and would seem to be rather easily corrected. After (provisionally) deciding to revert vandalism, it should evaluation its reversion change, and compare the score of the reversion to the score of the user change which invoked the reversion; if higher, it should skip applying the reversion.
In this instance, the user's change and the reversion should have pretty similar scores I'd guess, except that Cluebot NG's attempt to substitute "semen" for "moisture" should cause a higher score, and suppression of the reversion. -R. S. Shaw (talk) 20:11, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's not as simple as it may seem. The parameters to the neural network are not only based on the current edit, but also past user, and article, history. Even spoofing these values wouldn't cause the results you expect, considering it was a false positive in the first place, and the neural network always includes parameters that represent reversed edits.
- These false positives should be easy to stop, considering that they're fairly characteristic. The issue is that the current dataset includes few to no instances of vandal reverts. We'll look into manually supplementing it with some vandalism reverts to last until the randomized, reviewed dataset is finished.
- Keep in mind that the 0.1% FP rate is an accurate total, but doesn't have any bearing on exactly which edits are FPs. Crispy1989 (talk) 20:29, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Comment: If the Cluebot actually had a clue, he would notice that the appended marks at the end of the page were for James K. Polk and NOT James G. Polk.
First off, James G. Polk was never president of the United States. That was James K. Polk. James K. Polk was from North Carolina, James G. Polk was from Ohio.
Second, the information at the end of the page is totally unrelated to James G. Polk, as James G. Polk was never involved in the Mexican-American war of 1848.
Fix this. Now.

Comment: The subject of this bio has been accused repeatedly of autobiography, without any evidence. The critic has continuously failed to make constructive edits himself. Therefore, this bio should be trimmed back to the "bare bones" and the critic, ReidarM challenged to reinstate only those elements which he feels justified.

Comment: This is a high school and some genuinely good edits come from this IP address, as well as some childish vandalism. I hope your bot can differentiate the two next time.
Discussion
This false positive occurred before we upped the threshold. It would not have occurred at present settings.
Also, we recommend that users who know they're editing from an IP that contributes a large amount of vandalism get their own accounts, so they can be differentiated. Crispy1989 (talk) 09:14, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

The achievement list also provides a description of what needs to be accomplished in order for that achievement to be unlocked.

Comment: I'm not the editor in question; just came across this. The deal seems to be that 151.200.121.221 made three edits in a row to One strike, you're out, over a half hour, and cluebot NG reverted them all as a group. The first two of these edits are clearly non-vandalism, and perhaps important as they seem to add references to the article which had none. The last edit is more problematic, and I guess set off CBNG. It seems well intended but was more appropriate for the talk page (a knowledgeable editor would have just removed the {orphan} template). So the three edits taken as a group should have been evaluated as non-vandalism, and should have been evaluated together since they are being removed together.
Discussion
This is not really a false positive (borderline edit), but rather a potential problem with the bot's revert logic. Unfortunately, there are also two sides to this issue.
What often happens is, a user vandalizes the same page more than once in a row. Cluebot-NG may not catch the first vandal edit, but it may catch the second or third. Before, Cluebot-NG would just revert the edit it caught, which would often return a page to the before-vandalized state. It was changed to revert sequential edits by the user on the same page. This change in revert logic solves more problems than it causes.
If Cluebot-NG's accuracy increases to the point where it rarely misses vandalism, then this revert logic can be changed back to the original, because cases of the original problem (reverting vandalism back to an earlier-vandalized state) will become rare. Crispy1989 (talk) 08:31, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it is typical to revert a whole sequence of edits by a user when the latest one is deemed vandalism, and it is often quite useful. When a human does it, I think they sometimes, perhaps often, look at the group as a whole before deleting it (except when they've firmly established the user as a confirmed vandal, and except when the tool just does it, like autorollback). One more thing: a shared-IP address may hide two different humans making changes in a sequence, and so this would really be a "false same-editor-sequence".
- (The one line of "vandalism" involved here, BTW, is text that WP suggests be used, just for an edit summary, not in the body of an article. I note that Google sees about a dozen other articles where novices have put this text into the body. Most of these are probably really good faith but confused edits.)
- The bot probably does need to take more care in reverting a sequence of edits. I'd guess that after a vandalism edit is designated to be removed, the adjacent earlier same-editor edits should be evaluated by the bot. A threshold for deleting those should be applied, but a threshold lower (more biased towards deletion) than the main threshold. It might be useful to further conditionalize the decision on the strength of the vandalism score for the edit originally marked as vandalism (the higher it is, the lower the secondary threshold could be), but that might be carrying thing too far. -R. S. Shaw (talk) 22:49, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting idea. I develop the core, not the interface to Wikipedia (which handles that), so I can't guarantee that it's plausible to implement, but I'll pass it on to the developer in question. I think he is already storing past results, but I'm not sure if his architecture makes it easy or difficult to look up the past edits. Crispy1989 (talk) 06:31, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Comment: I don't believe that this edit was vandalism at all. In all fairness it was a factually correct edit: there is indeed a village of the same name just outside Coventry (Stoneleigh, Warwickshire). There is also a disambiguation page which the "vandalized" article does not link to. At worst this user is guilty of being new to Wikipedia, so I think the best way forward is to engage with them and perhaps add a link to the disambiguation page, or discuss this with the community. Both of which I'm happy to do on their behalf.
Perhaps ClueBot NG is being to liberal with the automatic reversions that it makes on some occasions, such as in this case where although the 'vandal's' contribution was not very well made, it did highlight that the Wikipedia articles relating to geographic locations called Stoneleigh require some disambiguation. The character is leaving EastEnders but at the minute it's unclear whether or not he'll leave in 2010 or 2011. The IP edited to say it was in 2010, all they did wrong was not include a reliable source to back up that claim. ClueBot NG reverted it as vandalism which it wasn't. It was a genuine good faith edit.
