Sharon Capeling-Alakija

Sharon Capeling-Alakija (1944-2003) was a Canadian development administrator. She was born in 1944 Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in and spent the early years of life the. Completing her elementary, secondary and tertiary education there. She graduated in 1966 with a BEd. from the University of Saskatchewan. In the early 60s taught history in Saskatoon. In the late 60s and early 70s she left Canada for teaching work and teacher in Tanzania and Barbados. She became further invovlved with NGOs and enhancing their effectiveness . n particular she played a central role in CUSO (Canadian University Service Overseas). Between 1989 and 1994 she was Director of UNIFEM and developing initiatives for UNIFEM in favour of the international women’s movement to assist women at policy and grassroots levels. She was also Executive Coordinator, United Nations Volunteers. [1][2]

In 1998 she was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and in 2003 was "appointed an officer in the Order of Canada".[2]
