Záběhlice is a cadastral area of Prague, Czech Republic, lying in both the Prague 10 and Prague 4 administrative districts.

History

The first mention of Záběhlice dates to the 1088 foundation charter of the Vyšehrad Canonry.[1] Though the surviving document itself is a forged copy from the 12th century, the mention is considered authentic.[1] By the fifteenth century, the growth of wineries in the township led to the wine of Záběhlice being ranked amongst the best Czech wines of the day.[1][2] The Záběhlice Church, built around the 12th century[3], is an important structure remaining from the early days of the township. Excavations in February 1960 uncovered the ruins of a medieval fort at the bottom of Hamerský Lake, probably built by Václav IV and destroyed in the Hussite Wars of 1420.[1] The first school was opened in 1863.[1] By 1907, it comprised of five grades, however two were operated privately.[2] It became a part of the city of Prague in 1922[4], and formed a division of the Prague XIII district.[5] In the 1960s, the extensive Zahradní Město housing estate was built in Záběhlice.[6]
