Clean up

This page needs cleanup, lots of things are listed twice that shouldn't be... 24.203.109.53 00:09, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The key thing about this article is that it's a list of common emoticons. It seems that some people are adding ones that seem to be ones made on the spot, or ones that just don't make sense. Suiken 01:09, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why settle for a list of only COMMON emoticons when Wikipedia has extensive articles about ASCII-cows? What hypocricy is this? 81.191.68.231 (talk) 13:47, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see #4/27/09 cleanup at the bottom of this page. hmwithτ 13:49, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if it's a big deal or not, but the information posted here is virtually identical to the following page: http://www.cgi3d.com/ascii_art/Emoticon.html

Neither references the other and I don't know who came first, but here it is for what it's worth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.102.37.231 (talk) 03:38, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Equals and No Nose?

I ALWAYS do my smileys like =) , XD , =D , >=( , etc. because having big eyes is cuter and the nose looks like a squidward nose in smileys like :-) . Also, I don't like how they have a million different types of the same thing. Only the important things, like the basics of the face, are worth noting. People will understand that you can not only do =P but also =p (but I like the first better) on their own. Sorry, this is just my opinion– I'm a very artistic person so this kind of thing bothers me >.< Uber-Awesomeness (talk) 20:06, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

graphical emoticons

yes, many of these are not really used. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.134.52.64 (talk) 08:33, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm new to this editing process, but my opinion is that to remove it just for duplication reasons would be a shame. I fond it by looking for a list of textual and graphical emoticons and I was glad to find it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.157.77.96 (talk) 23:17, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

5/25/08 cleanup

I cleaned up and re-sorted many of the western style emoticons and removed eastern style/ASCII art. I only left those that seemed to convey an emotion 67.182.1.233 (talk) 19:07, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

9/2/08 Cleanup

I removed these 2:
\m/(>_<)\m/
Rock on / "Devil-Horn Salute"

<|:-o-|-<
Gnome

If you have ever heard of them, feel to add them back in but they don't seem to be used commonly.
Also added

X:PD
Mocking Laughter
--IKrolm (talk) 16:31, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You were right to remove those two but X:PD is just as uncommon as the two you removed. Reliable Forevertalk 20:35, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where are the Western-style emoticons?

This article is "List of common emoticons". So where is the list of common Western-style emoticons:

:)
:(
;)
:P
:*

etc......?

˜˜˜

Hi. Someone removed them but I added them back in because this is a list and the Western-style emotions list was already short. ~AH1(TCU) 23:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Split page?

Should maybe there be a list of common and uncommon emoticons? The more obscure ones are interesting to learn and see but are not exactly common. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Questionor (talkcontribs) 20:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

JESUS CHRIST RUN IT'S A FUCKING LION...

... vs. Cute cat. The :3 expression seems to keep changing from Cute Cat to all kinds of variations like JESUS CHRIST RUN IT'S A LION to some that include profanity, all saying that this is some sort of Internet meme. :P and disdain

on 23:34, 3 December 2008, Stobrawa edited :P to claim its a raspberry without the disdain? how/why is it without the disdain exactly? when did this happen? I disagree the standard usage lacks disdain, I believe the lack of disdain is at best a dialect, at worst simply unconscious disdain.

"Next-generation" unicode emoticons

Hi, I found a entire new style of emoticons. They are making use of those special combined characters of some languages. That way you can combine multiple characters one one single place. Here are some examples:

٩(-̮̮̃-̃)۶
٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶
٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶
((•̪●))
  • From someone's nickname:
santa (●̮̮̃•̃) clause (The "eyebrows" are supposed to be above the "eyes")

They don't work with every font tough.

About Japanese 2channel emoticons

Hey who removed a lot of 2ch emoticon? I used to find them here. I can't type them out without copying from here! Isn't that a function of an encyclopedia? \| ̄ヘ ̄|/ Hermesw (talk) 18:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why so few examples?

In the past there was a lot more examples of emoticons, now they have been drastically decreased. Where have every emoticon gone? This is a list article! There should be many examples in it. In the emoticon article they can be kept at a minimum. Actually the emoticon article has more examples of emoticons than this article has. As some of those before me pointed out, there are even some very common ones missing. I think we should bring back some (which were good) of the emoticons once being in this list. Is the problem that it has to be proven that they are commonly used? In that case, why don't make a new section or even a new article, containing all emoticons, even unverified (it has to be mentioned of course in the section or article title)? It is clear that many people are missing the removed ones. --Kri (talk) 22:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In fact I couldn't see anything wrong in the original article. Unclear meaning of emoticons? Not to remove so many I guess? And now somebody propose to delete this article. Which rule of wikipedia is violated? Can somebody explain it to me? Listing stuff is no good? Hermesw (talk) 00:08, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Semi protecting this article

Maybe it would be a good idea to put a semi protection on it too, for preventing non-registered users from adding nonsense emoticons. --Kri (talk) 12:59, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that is a good idea. Companioncube31 (talk) 21:40, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems a little aseptic now.

I used to link to the "List of Common Emoticons" page to find interesting symbols. Now that there are but a half-a-dozen examples of each type, it's useless and boring - aseptic.

I took it to be about something dynamic/ changing/ alive, not stale and historic. I think someone has taken an over-zealous, pedantic approach to editing it and sucked all the life out of the subject.

MHO.9kevin9 (talk) 05:19, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We require reliable sources and verifiability for all articles. Find citations for some of these emoticons and you're free to re-add them to the article. --MZMcBride (talk) 08:22, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I have put together a small list of web sources that I could find.
How about those sources? Take notice: Common emoticons are probable to appear in two or more of the listed links. The links are not sorted in any specific order. --Kri (talk) 11:39, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, my addition of the standardized codes of smilies was the only possibility to make this list a relevant article of an encyclopedia. I clearly put the sources, which were all reliable (one of them was from Media Wiki, which is absolutely relevant for Wikipedia). I can not understand why you (MZMcBride) reverted it without even giving a reason.--Demoeconomist (talk) 15:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Either cite the additions using reliable sources or they will continue to be removed. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:08, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since we aren't able to have a long list....

I propose just using my user page. I used it to preserve the list when it was being considered for deletion. Companioncube31 (talk) 21:22, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Source citing

You say we have to cite all sources, well the references we have are probably wrong. Genealogy online, come on, how many emoticons can that book possibly contain? Every anonymous user who is editing this article is referreing to that source; they are guaranteed just copying and pasting some row in the first table, keeping the reference at the end of the description, especially since they are changing emoticons which are already cited from that source. This is not working out in my opinion, but you can do whatever you want to do with the article. --Kri (talk) 19:56, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was not aimed against anyone specific. --Kri (talk) 21:56, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Who the fcuk removed the list

While i understand all the citation and verification policy, but people are you totally BLIND? It is foolish to blindly follow rules like bunched of trained monkeys instead of actually thinking about the reasons and consequences of it. It is in order to prevent from flow of incorrect information, in case of something like list of emoticons this is totally ridiculous. Because this article is basically about list of user created content. And searching for "source" of something that you created on your own is kind of unreal.

You mark a point but I like this list. I got myself a website dedicated to the emoticons, smileys and other kaoanis (Emoticones Avenue) but they are all animated gifs, nothing like those found here. I think I might learn how to type some from this list because they are funny and when I go to an internet cafe and I can't use my msn messenger, I have nothing nice to show my mood. Now I have no excuse, just have to learn some from this list. PS: don't delete that list because at least, I know where to find it. --58.8.220.180 (talk) 04:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Gwengoat[reply]

A few days ago I discovered this page and fell in love. It was exactly what I was looking for! I posted it to Reddit and everyone there loved it. http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/8c7i0/today_i_learned_that_wikipedia_has_a_full_list_of/

Those of you who've "cleaned it up" have completely ruined it. Thank you for ensuring that the hit count of this page is going to go become nonexistent. It's not as if Wikipedia pages are for people to actually find what they're looking for or anything. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Morgnosi (talkcontribs) 00:35, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

4/27/09 cleanup

I cleaned up this page, per a request at WP:AN. It still needs a lot of references, but it looks a lot better. I removed a bunch of information that was word for word in the emoticons article, and I removed less notable icons. We need to focus on references for these most notable ones. More can be added with references. hmwithτ 03:56, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to add back any deleted references with reliable sources. hmwithτ 13:49, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why are emoticons being deleted?

Why are 2/3 of the emoticons gone? If it's because of no sources, then why are the other un-cited emotes still up? Why does the "Emoticons" page have more emotes and the "List of Emoticons" page? This is supposed to be a list of emoticons. Why are there so few of them? (╬ ಠ益ಠ) -Mike 72.144.115.63 (talk) 20:43, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See the section directly above. They need to be cited to reliable sources or removed. The list was previously pretty ridiculous. Feel free to add new entries iff they contain citations or add citations to the current list. :-) --MZMcBride (talk) 20:46, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
