The Scottish Education Department (SED) is the body responsible for schooling in Scotland. It has had its offices in Edinburgh since 1918, when it replaced the older, London-based "Scotch Education Department". Since devolution it has been answerable to the Scottish Parliament. It also provides maintenance grants for Scottish university students.
