On the morning of November 11,1980 at approximately 7:17am (Pacific Time) a fire broke out in a deli at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas which spread through the complex eventually destroying the building and 87 people including tourists and hotel/casino employees perished in this disaster. At the time it was considered to be the worst hotel fire in U.S. history.

According to the official report by the Clark County, Nevada Fire Department the cause of the fire was due to improperly grounded wire.

The MGM Grand was rebuild however not long after owner Kirk Kerkorian sold it to Bally's Entertainment (Now Caesars Entertainment) who changed the name to Bally's Las Vegas.
