James Roosevelt was the father of Franklin Roosevelt. Known to Franklin as Mr. James, he married Sara Delano in his 40's, and they produced only one child, Franklin. Mr. James was tall, slender, and wealthy. His first marriage was to Rebecca Howland, a second cousin. When she died 25 years after their marriage, he wed Sara. He was a good father to Franklin, but Mr. James suffered a very severe heart attack when Franklin was 8 and became an invalid. He would remain that way for the rest of his life. Because of his disability, Franklin tried everything in his best ability to please his father.
