"It Gets the Worst at Night" is episode 17 of season 4 of the television show One Tree Hill.

Plot

Skills receives a text message from Mouth, telling him he is in Honey Grove, Texas, and "needs ass" meaning assistance. So Lucas, Peyton, Brooke, Nathan, Haley and Skills set off in a road trip to Honey Grove.

During the trip, the teens read each other their yearbooks. Peyton signed Lucas' with her name as she didn't know him. Taylor James signed Lucas' with "Lucas, I know you want me". They also find a message from Jimmy Edwards.

Along the way, the car breaks down. A tour bus then pulls up, and Chris Keller gets out. He offers them a lift as his tour bus is going through Honey Grove anyway. When they arrive they find Mouth who is in jail, and get him released. Mouth was arrested for sleeping on a park bench. Rachel left him on their trip, when she met a man. When they see a sign for the Honey Grove prom, they decide to go as their prom wasn't what they had expected. Lucas realises that it was Abby Brown in the hallway when Keith was shot.

Karen and Dan get closer and Dan sleeps over on the couch. Karen makes them breakfast. Dan decides to get the phone he found at the prom, call history.

Chris is made fun of by some girls at the prom, asking how old he was and laughing at him. Peyton and Lucas have sex for the first time. Brooke tells Haley that she stole the test papers. Haley later forgives her. Brooke, Mouth and Skills walk in on Lucas and Peyton. Brooke seems upset and goes for a walk by herself. She meets Chris, who suggests meaningless sex, however Brooke turns him down. The next day they are getting ready to leave. Chris leaves on his bus and nobody says goodbye. The Tree Hill gang leave.

The phone is checked for fingerprints and as everybody had them taken after the school shooting, a match is found.

Back at home, Nathan tells Lucas a federal investigator had been talking to him about point shaving. That means Lucas had done it in the semi-finals. Lucas then goes to Abby's house and knocks on the door. Dan is seen in his car outside Abby's house.

• Episode shot on location in Honey Grove, Texas as part of the "Sunkist Brings One Tree Hill To Your Hometown" national contest.

• During the episode Peyton made a mix CD for the trip, which she named The Road Mix , and at the end of the episode Hayle placed a picture with the main characters in front of Chris Keller's bus. This is a reference to the third season soundtrack, since this photo, along with the photo of Mouth and Rachel showed before in the episode, is the cover of the album, and several songs from this episode appear on the album as well.
