The 1984 Eccles rail crash occurred on 4 December 1984 alongside the M602 motorway at Eccles, Greater Manchester. The 10:05 express passenger train from Liverpool to Scarborough collided with the rear of an oil tank train at about 45 mph. Its driver and two passengers were killed, and 68 people were injured.

The cause of the accident was determined to be that the driver of the express train had passed a signal at danger. There was, however, no AWS to alert him.
