- The pivotal Third Plenum of the 11th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was held in Beijing. Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping was successful in persuading the Party to reverse policies implemented by the late Chairman Mao Zedong and to pursue a program for Chinese economic reform.
- Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy, was arrested. He would later be convicted of the murders of 33 young men and boys committed between 1972 and 1978.
- Argentina began Operation Soberanía, and invasion of Chile, but Argentinian quickly withdrew.
