You can discuss the genre on the article's talk page by clicking "Talk" just below the article title. (For example Talk:Steppin' Out (Joe Jackson song).) But please read the information at WP:GWAR. You need to have a reliable source that describes the genre, and not just your opinion. NsevsTalk 04:05, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Genres and sourcing on Wikipedia

Hello, I see that you have had some of your edits reverted. I don't doubt that you're adding these genres in good faith, but please read WP:Genre warrior for information about how genres function on Wikipedia. You cannot cite user-generated or self-published sources (like the Steve Hoffman forums that you cited at True (Spandau Ballet song)), or auto-generated genres from Spotify (as chosic.com provides, which you cited on multiple other pages). See WP:UGC for more information about why this is.

I'm not trying to come down on you, since I do believe that you are trying to constructively contribute and cite sources for your information. However, these kinds of sources are not reliable by Wikipedia standards. JeffSpaceman (talk) 15:58, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

did you block my edits with sources Iamthegoat524 (talk) 14:48, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted your addition of "rock and roll" to "Pump It Up".[1] The source is Far Out magazine which is crap. They scrape the web for content. And even if it was a good magazine, the source is saying that "Pump It Up" is more in the direction of rock'n'roll than any other Elvis Costello song. That doesn't mean it gets all the way there to official rock and roll musical genre. Binksternet (talk) 00:21, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about Cars by Gary Numan. Yes, I know AllMusic is not that reliable, but I see others with an All Music source. Iamthegoat524 (talk) 00:44, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You must be referring to this edit where you said "Cars" is a "disco=rock" song. Your source is not a human writing prose about the genre so it is not reliable. Instead, your source is a collection of songs that some record producer thought could be sold as "Disco Rock Classics". That kind of thing will never be a reliable source on Wikipedia. Binksternet (talk) 06:56, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

someone deleted the genre on my we got the beat edit Iamthegoat524 (talk) 23:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did. You cited medium.com which is poor quality, basically a blog host. See WP:MEDIUM which says we should not consider it reliable. Binksternet (talk) 00:04, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
oh okay Iamthegoat524 (talk) 02:03, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
did you delete my edit on don't give up? Iamthegoat524 (talk) 05:17, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The cited source was not explicitly describing the song's genre. See WP:EXPLICITGENRE. The source was talking about a "pop performance", not a pop song. Binksternet (talk) 06:23, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why was "Addicted to Love" reverted? I'm sorry if I keep forgetting, it's my first time. Iamthegoat524 (talk) 02:45, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question, if a website is stating that a song is a "punk dance rocker", should I use Dance-punk or Dance-rock as a genre Iamthegoat524 (talk) 02:48, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The source in the Discogs was the part that said the style was punk and pop rock. Someone else did the same thing on "Couldn't get it Right" Iamthegoat524 (talk) 00:42, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Discogs is not considered reliable. See WP:ALBUMAVOID. People can log on anytime and change the facts, which is why it fails WP:USERG. The only reliable thing at Discogs are the images taken of album credits and liner notes, especially if there are several editions of the release so that the images can be compared. If someone actually wrote on the "We Got the Beat" release that it was punk or pop rock, then that person could be quoted as an interesting side note, but liner note authors are primary sources, not WP:SECONDARY. Uninvolved music critics are the defining sources for genre. Binksternet (talk) 02:05, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Right now you cannot be trusted to edit about genres or provide appropriate sources for your edits. While you are blocked from editing articles, you are not blocked from contributing to talk pages. You may make edit requests(click for instructions) on article talk pages to propose edits and sources to articles for other editors to review. After you get a history of having your requests accepted, then we can talk about allowing you to regain access to Article space to edit yourself- but that won't be permitted now. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 08:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Hello, Iamthegoat524,
Saying "You can't do this to me" will never get you unblocked. We need to see that you are aware of your mistakes (specify what they are) and that you will not do them in the future. Begging and pleading have only negative effect on the administrator who will review this unblock request. I HIGHLY recommend you read Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks which tells you exactly what you need to do to be unblocked. Unfortunately, for some unknown reasons, most blocked editors don't even look at this page which the blocking admin advises that you read. Geting unblocked isn't a matter of spending 3 minutes writing up a "Don't block me" request but showing you understand why you have been blocked.
You have already been blocked several times for the exact same problems so if you are still being blocked over genres, you're going to have to be very convincing that these problems won't come up in the future. Admins don't want to return to block you every time there is a future problem. Liz Read! Talk! 07:44, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there!

Hi, So I tried talking to HJ Mitchell, the administrator who blocked me, he didn't respond. Apparently, I want to be unblocked from Wikipedia because I like editing genres with source. And I'm not trying to disruptive or a jerk, I just want to make edits. Sorry If they are not reliable, I'll try to do better if I can find a way to find out if a source is reliable. Just trying to do my best! From, iamthegoat524 Iamthegoat524 (talk) 03:31, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello, so I know I have been blocked from Wikipedia and I want to talk about it. First off, I'm sorry about the edits. I'm not trying to vandalize Wikipedia or be a jerk, I'm just trying to make helpful edits. I'm just trying to do my best with the sources. I'll let someone know if the source is reliable or not the next time before I edit. I noticed how Wikipedia reverted my Russians edit, I edited that because the original genre didn't have a sourced edit. But I'll promise to change and do better on my genre edits. Wikipedia's technical logs indicate that this IP address or network has been used to disrupt Wikipedia. It has been blocked from editing to prevent further abuse.
If you are not the intended target of this block, please read the information below in order to receive assistance.
Wikipedia tries to be open, but we sometimes must block IP addresses to prevent editing by abusers, vandals, or block evaders. These blocks can affect users who have done nothing wrong. If you are a legitimate user, follow the instructions below to edit despite the block. Users who are the intended target of a range block may still appeal the block.

IP users (without an account): If you do not have an account and wish to bypass this block, an account can be created to allow you to edit. In general, these blocks only prevent users who are not logged in from editing; once you are logged in, the block will no longer affect you in any way. Please request an account under your preferred username. It is important that you use an e-mail address issued to you by your ISP, school, or organisation, so we may verify that you are a legitimate user. If using the form, please refer to this block under "comments". If e-mailing, please refer to this block in your message.

Registered users (with an account): Please make sure you are logged in to your account. If you are unable to edit while logged in, you may request IP block exemption to bypass blocks unconnected with you that affect your editing. Post an unblock request to your user talk page.

Administrators: Checkusers have access to confidential system logs not accessible by the public or administrators due to the Wikimedia Foundation's privacy policy. You must not loosen or remove this block, or issue an IP block exemption, without consulting a checkuser or the Arbitration Committee. Administrators who undo checkuser blocks without permission from a checkuser or the Arbitration Committee may be summarily desysopped.

Goodbye

Well, I have never been unblocked, so I think I should leave. I realized I have made mistakes and I loved editing, but I can't do it anymore, so I'm going to leave under one condition. Please don't revert my edits. Iamthegoat524 (talk) 23:59, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Attempting to return with a different username ("Spencer524", "Spencyg", or whatever) will not succeed. By doing this, you've merely been digging yourself into a deeper hole.
