143 is the upcoming seventh studio album by the American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. It is set to be released on September 20, 2024, by Capitol Records. The album's release will coincide with her show at Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. She worked with various producers on the album, such as Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Stargate, Vaughn Oliver, and Rocco Did It Again!. Perry described 143 as a dance album with themes of joy, love, and light.

Production

Following the 2020 release of her sixth album, Smile,[1] Perry confirmed in August 2023 she was working on new material from a "place of love" during an interview with Good Morning America.[2] The next February, she made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and announced her exit from the American Idol judges' panel following the conclusion of the twenty-second season, wanting to "go out and feel that pulse to my own beat" and release new music after being "in the studio for a while".[3] Two months later, Perry told Access Hollywood "I just have yet to make a record from a place of feeling really happy and whole and full of love. Sometimes artists are like, 'Oh, that’s boring, you want to make music from kind of like a tougher place,' but actually it's very bright and joyful, like pure joy and fun and playful and celebratory and a party."[4] Rolling Stone reported in June 2024 that Perry "reconnected" with various music producers who worked with her before, including Max Martin, Stargate and Dr. Luke.[5]

During a livestream via her social media on July 10, 2024, Perry described 143 as a dance album. She mentioned "I've been talking about [doing] two albums the past eight years and that's a dance album and an acoustic album. I haven't yet made the acoustic album. Well, we never stop writing. But I finally made the dance album, the album I always wanted to make. This record is super high energy, it's super summer, it's very high BPM. We just had a family dance party to one of the songs, and it's just full of so much joy, so much love, so much light."[6]

Album title

On an exclusive interview with Zane Lowe, Perry explained why the title is 143, “It's called 143. It's my angel number. It's my symbol, it's my sign. A couple years ago, we were going through a little bit of a hard time medically in our family, and it was a little bit scary, and I started seeing 143 in many different ways, not just, like, on the phone. It was just like trippy, almost. And I looked it up, and it's code for 'I love you.' I really believe it was my angels, my guides, saying, 'I love you. We got you. We're going to protect you. You're exactly where you're meant to be. You're on the path, exactly where I'm meant to be at this moment."[7]

Release and promotion

The singer revealed on July 10, 2024 that her seventh album is titled 143 and will be distributed through Capitol Records on September 20, 2024.[8] To further excite her fans, Perry went on a social media livestream that day and teased new songs from the album, including "Nirvana", "Gimme Gimme" featuring 21 Savage, and "I'm His He's Mine" featuring Doechii, which samples "Gypsy Woman" by Crystal Waters.[6] The album is scheduled to be released on CD, vinyl, and cassette.[9] On the exclusive interview with Lowe, Perry shared two other snippets from the album; "Lifetime" and "Gorgeous".[10]
