Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Moonraker (talk | contribs) at 23:17, 10 July 2024 (Errors in "Did you know ...": add). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 09:35 on 12 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Talbot H. Green

The hook on the main page claims Green used a "false identity". I cannot find such a claim in the article or in the source used at Template:Did you know nominations/Talbot H. Green. The law at the time allowed people to change their name and to use different names. Green appears to have used an alias to get away from his former name. But that was not a "fake name", it was a perfectly lawful new name, or we could say "alias". The hook might be okay if it said "alias". Moonraker (talk) 23:17, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly not an error per se, but in the fourth hook, I suggest changing "portion" to "part" just for some elegant variation from the hook directly above. Primergrey (talk) 22:42, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't that hook say in China?--Launchballer 22:45, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, are you asking me? Primergrey (talk) 22:58, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm asking whoever mans this page.--Launchballer 23:01, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I actually thought about that, Launchballer, and decided it was clear enough without it to dispense with the extra wordiness. No objection if others disagree. Valereee (talk) 23:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't seem to make sense as written... Plans to shoot portions of the film were cancelled? That sounds like they didn't shoot any of it.  — Amakuru (talk) 23:11, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
