"No Award"
What is the purpose of having rows with "No Award" in them? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rfwebster (talk • contribs) 19:11, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Rayleigh
The 1920 award was given not to John Strutt (3rd Baron Rayleigh) who died in 1919, but to his son, Robert Strutt (4th Baron Rayleigh). This can be proved by his biography (see page 505). --80.94.164.195 (talk) 12:51, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- That is correct, I've changed it in the article. Despite being a featured list I don't think enough research was done here. Hence when the RS society stated that it was Baron Rayleigh that received the award, no attempt was made to find out which it was. Benea (talk) 15:18, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Fresnel
Quite a lot of sources, some of them quite reputable, give the year of Fresnel's award as 1827, shortly before his death. Some even specifiy the month before his death. Some other sources, including the RS itself, have the award in 1824. This would fit with the tradition of the award made every other year, since even with years with no awards, 1827 would be out of sequence. This discrepancy is unusual. Given that there is so little information on the background of the award, which might cast some light on the history of this, I'm surprised to see this is a featured article/list. The majority seems to come from the RS website, which is no doubt reputable. But with the statement 'The Rumford Medal is awarded biennially (in even years)', can we safely extrapolate and say that this was always the case? Benea (talk) 17:47, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
