Savio is closed

[edit]

Since Savio Prep has closed this month, I have added a note in the Archdiocese's article. Should it be removed altogether?

removed "Cardinal" section

[edit]

This paragraph was a somewhat misleading attempt to explain why Abp. O'Malley wasn't named a Cardinal until 2006:

  • For a number of years the Archbishop of Boston was traditionally named a Cardinal. Pope John Paul II also denied the archdiocese a new prelate cardinal while Cardinal Law was still in active service in the Roman Curia. That changed on February 22, 2006 when Pope Benedict XVI announced that current Archbishop Seán Patrick O'Malley would be among 15 bishops who would be appointed as cardinals in the near future. Cardinal O'Malley and the 14 others were formally installed in a ceremony in Rome on March 24, 2006.

To start with, the premise of this paragraph is erroneous, as Cardinal Law has remained in active service in several curial departments (as John Allen wrote in 2008.) Pope John Paul II's last consistory was in October 2003. To include Abp. O'Malley in it, only three months after his arrival in Boston, would have been counterproductive for his main work in dealing with the scandal of clerical sexual abuse cases. Treating it as a snub ("denied the archdiocese a new prelate cardinal") is an opinion. Chonak (talk) 17:00, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notable parishes???

[edit]

With all due respect to the Polish Catholic population of the Boston Archdiocese, I find it a tad odd that 5 parishes are listed here as 'notable parishes', that 3 of the 5 are what would once have been termed 'national' parishes, and that those 3 were all erected for Polish immigrant Catholics. Unless someone clues me in as to a specific reason that makes these 3 notable versus several other parishes in the Archdiocese which have much more notability, I will be editing accordingly. Hospitals

[edit]

The hospitals that formerly made up the Caritas group now all belong to Steward Health Care, they should be removed from the table. Perhaps text might be added as to their historic ties to the Archdiocese. Irish Melkite (talk) 05:25, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Bishops" section, previously "Ordinaries" -- has had much more work

[edit]

Section title was changed because the section includes Auxiliary Bishops; "Ordinary" refers to the Bishop OF THE DIOCESE, and that is not what an Auxiliary Bishop is. I added the part which lists other priests of this diocese who then served elsewhere as bishops. Also, I added the "cross" emblem in front of names of those who are deceased.

On June 4, I added Robert P. Reed and Mark William O'Connell, appointed on the previous day as auxiliary bishops for this archdiocese. I do see auxiliary bishops having individual articles here on Wikipedia, and someone will have to reconsider the labeling and cross-referencing used for "Robert Reed (bishop)", because that is a different Robert Reed from the new auxiliary bishop I just mentioned.

oops, forgot to comment on this in changes

[edit]

Cardinal O'Malley is shown in a photo; I added "OFM Cap" to the caption. The usual practice, however, is that when a religious-order priest becomes a bishop, he is officially no longer under the superior of that order. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.102.56.94 (talk) 20:00, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

3 bishops who should have articles on Wikipedia but don't

[edit]

2 of them are the auxiliary bishops named on June 3, 2016 (see above), and there is also: Paul Fitzpatrick Russell, appointed nuncio, and titular Archbishop

Can someone get this done? Notice that Robert Reed, one of those newly-named auxiliary bishops, is not to be confused with "Robert Reed (bishop)", who died in 1415 and is currently referred to as such on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.102.56.94 (talk) 23:59, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Overlinking

[edit]

Hi. Regarding your previous edit at Sarah Huckabee Sanders, please read WP:Overlinking. Common words/places like the US do not need to be linked. Also, no need to repeat the same wikilink more than once, especially in the same relatively short section. Thanks. Bennv3771 (talk) 18:29, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Little-noted sex abuse scandal

[edit]

I'm a wee bit curious why there is only a brief paragraph about one of the most significant events in the history of the archdiocese, the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston sex abuse scandal? Seems like the spiritual and financial ramifications might a part of the archdiocese's history that (unfortunately) makes the archdiocese notable. — btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 03:23, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pastoral regions ref

[edit]

Hell DanInBoston and welcome to the encyclopedia. Your recent edit[1] removed a source from the article. The "Archbishops, Bishops, Vicars" page on that same website appears to verify the content that you've added. Please add a reference to the Wikipedia article linking this page or another appropriate reference. And feel free to ask if you need help citing sources. Regards, Rjjiii(talk) 00:53, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The source I removed was an obsolete reference. The page you cite is certainly a valid, authoritative one. Since it applies to the entire "Pastoral regions" paragraph and table, where to you recommend the reference be placed? -- In the one-sentence paragraph that precedes the table? DanInBoston (talk) 01:23, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DanInBoston: I think placing the reference at the end of that one-sentence paragraph sounds like a good location. Rjjiii(talk) 15:58, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
