Dr Bayo Aluko-Olokun MFR, is a Nigerian Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon born on the 2nd of July, 1973 in Kaduna, Kaduna State to the family of Chief Bayo Aluko-Olokun S.A.N, was raised to simultaneously speak Yoruba, Hausa, English and a healthy dose of Latin. He attended Kaduna Capital School and Government College Kaduna before proceeding to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he graduated in Dental Surgery winning the prize instituted by Prof Kinziro Kubota for best graduating student in Conservation and Prosthetics in 1998/99 academic session. He is married to a radiologist Dr Oluseun Aluko-Olokun FMCR and they have 2 children together.

Dr Bayo Aluko-Olokun, a Marian devotee of the catholic faith, lives in the capital city of Abuja, Nigeria with his wife and kids. He enjoys the fascinating world of Aviation and he self-identifies as a motorsports enthusiast.

  • Mentioned in many independent newspapers and cited by fellow scientists for his published Research on the "Mosquito repelling properties of human facial sebum". He is quoted as saying this finding has potential for industrial and commercial development [1][2][3]
  • Established a health and disease-based economic index (extremepovertywatch.com). Dr Bayo Aluko-Olokun is credited with the proposal for using Noma disease (cancrum oris) as an economic index to measure extreme poverty. This index accurately reflects the well-being of a community and its economic status[4][5].
  • Between 2001 and 2007, Dr Aluko-Olokun was the beneficiary of an exclusive and complete residency training programme under no less a personality than Prof Ademola Abayomi Olaitan, a Past President of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, who instilled in him the values of total commitment to a universal approach to solving problems with a surgical mind. This apprenticeship in facial surgery gave birth to the easily mastered, first zero-excision approach to repair of facial cleft known to the surgical world. The approach to cleft lip repair, popularly known as the Olokun - Olaitan Approach, provides possibilities of unlimited revision surgeries due to its tissue-conserving principle; it is renowned for its simplicity, and reduction of blood loss during operation by more than 70%, while also obviating the need for any hospital admission.[6]
  • He also found that skin tissues in direct contact with cartilage produce insect-repelling sebum, which helps explain the previously unexplained 'idiopathic cervico-facial abscess' caused by mosquito bites responsible for malaria in children not old enough to produce nasal sebum.
  • In the field of mandibular reconstruction, this surgeon successfully used absorbable and affordable polyglactin sutures instead of mini-plates for fixation, marking a significant advancement. (ref.)[7].
  • He also described a fast and simple stitch-and-stab technique for cyst decompression, known as the "Aluko technique". (ref). This technique replaces more complex and recurrence-prone procedures.[8]
  • Dr. Bayo Aluko-Olokun is recognized for pioneering collaborative research works in Maxillofacial Surgery, which have had positive impact in other specialties and fields such as paediatrics, dermatology, gynaecology, hydrology and economics.
  • In unilateral cleft lip repair, he introduced the only zero-excisionsurgical approach, which conserves tissue and allows for unlimited revision surgeries. (ref. Olokun-Olaitan Approach)[9]
  • His series of studies on facial keloids demonstrated that the morphology of keloids (sessile or pedunculated) determines treatment outcomes, challenging the previously held belief that treatment results were completely unpredictable. (ref).
  • He determined the maximum effective volume of drug per lesion, and optimal injection interval for treatment of keloid using steroids (ref.).
  • He demonstrated an innovative method using low-cost plaster-stone casts was utilized to accurately monitor keloid shrinkage and show treatment progress to patients. This eliminated the need for expensive alternatives like spectrophotometry (ref.).  
  • The use of metal syringes with specific gauges by Aluko-Olokun allowed for almost painless steroid injections into keloids, reducing splatter and severe pain usually associated with treatment of keloids. (ref.). Aluko-Olokun also established the reliability of Biological Effective Dose of radiation in predicting keloid recurrence.
  • In the course of his research, the Maxillofacial surgeon discovered correlations between global and African albinism prevalence and HIV burden. He documented from his findings that albinism does hinder access to free anti-retroviral treatment.
  • In radiation medicine, he confirmed that human hair provides protection against solar radiation injuries in albinos. Additionally, he has highlighted the importance of avoiding radiotherapy for skin cancers involving the cranium. Further, the limitations of current nuclear bone scan techniques in detecting bone metastasis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma has been credited to him as the pioneer scientist to make this discovery
