Eternal Call (Russian: Вечный зов, romanized: Vechnyy zov) was a Soviet epic TV series. It was filmed by directors Vladimir Krasnopolsky and Valery Uskov based on the novel of the same name by Anatoli Ivanov at Mosfilm Studios. It ran from June 2, 1976 to May 20, 1983 on the Soviet Central Television.[1]
Plot
The series traces the fate of the Siberian family of Savelyevs from 1906 to the 1960s. It covers three wars, the Russian Revolution, the establishment of the Soviet Union, the era of Stalinism, etc.[2]
Season 1
The initial four episodes of the film delve into the formative years and early experiences of the main characters, shedding light on their upbringing and the pivotal role they played in the fight for the establishment of Soviet power in the rural regions of Siberia. The movie encompasses a comprehensive portrayal of the pre-revolutionary era, capturing the essence of the socio-political landscape and the tumultuous events that set the stage for the onset of the Russian Civil War.
The fifth to the eighth episodes delve into the arduous journey of collective farmers as they strive to build a better life in their village, guided by the unwavering leadership of Bolsheviks Polycarp Kruzhilin and Pankrat Nazarov. These episodes also shine a light on the enchanting tales of romance and the awe-inspiring endeavors of the Soviet people during the transformative period of the initial Five-year plans of the Soviet Union. In the midst of these circumstances, the individual stories of our protagonists begin to unravel. Anna, the daughter of the affluent Siberian businessman Kaftanov, finds herself compelled to join a partisan unit, driven by her unwavering love for Fyodor Savelyev. However, this decision comes at a high cost as she must confront and defy her father's disapproval of their relationship. The dramatic tale of Ivan Savelyev unfolds as he initially aligns himself with the White Bandits, engages in a forbidden affair with Anna, endures a period of incarceration, and ultimately finds his way back to his homeland.
In addition to portraying the initial days of the Great Patriotic War, the first season delves into the experiences of Semyon Savelyev and Kiryan Inyutin as they bravely venture to the front lines. Meanwhile, Yakov Aleynikov and Polycarp Kruzhilin, who have endured significant hardships prior to the war, find themselves confronted with intricate interpersonal challenges. The heroes of the movie focus all their efforts on restoring and launching a military plant in Shantarsk, which is responsible for supplying weapons to the front lines. The plant had to be evacuated due to the ongoing conflict, but now the heroes are determined to bring it back to its former glory and resume its crucial role in supporting the front.
The eleventh and twelfth episodes of this gripping tale delve into the dramatic events that unfolded during the initial months of the Great Patriotic War, chronicling the relentless fight against the encroaching Nazi invaders near Moscow. Taking center stage is the awe-inspiring and self-sacrificing battle waged on the home front, where the unwavering determination to secure victory becomes the driving force behind the tireless efforts to supply the front lines with much-needed ammunition and the nation with an abundance of sustenance. This concerted endeavor is marked by a resounding chorus of voices, emanating from every corner of society, proclaiming the resolute rallying cry: "All for the front! Everything for victory!" From the youngest to the oldest, individuals of all ages and walks of life unite in solidarity, ceaselessly toiling towards a shared goal – ensuring the triumph of their beloved homeland.
Episode 1: The Eldest Brother
It is 1906, pre-revolutionary Russia. In the distant and secluded village of Mikhailovka in Siberia, located in close proximity to Shantarsk (a town that serves as a fictional replica of Krasnoyarsk), a remarkable event unfolds as two comrades, Pankrat Nazarov and Demyan Inyutin, who had grown up together in this very village, make their triumphant return after fighting in the war against Japan. They had suffered serious injuries, with Pankrat losing a leg and Demyan being shot in the lung. Demyan, a hero with the Cross of Saint George, is disabled but doesn't want to be idle.
Demyan goes to Mikhail Lukich Kaftanov, a wealthy man in the village, offering to protect his valuable possessions, suggesting that having a vigilant and watchful "chain dog" would greatly assist in overseeing and safeguarding all aspects of the landowner's property. In fact, the village is frequently targeted by gypsies who steal horses, so Demyan's help is needed. Following a short period of contemplation, Kaftanov ultimately consents to the request. Pankrat, eager to secure employment, approaches Demyan in search of work. However, Demyan declines Pankrat's plea, asserting his own limited yet tangible authority.
Simultaneously, the household of one of the inhabitants residing in the village, Silanty Savelyev, a destitute peasant, consists of a total of three male offspring, namely Anton, Fyodor, and Ivan. Anton, the eldest son, is discovered to be assisting the gypsies by leading them through the forest to avoid capture. However, Anton has dreams of leaving the village and going to the city, so he doesn't want to join the gypsies permanently. One day Silanty decides to send his two sons, Anton and Mitrofan, on a journey to Novonikolayevsk (the present-day Novosibirsk). The purpose of this trip is for Anton to secure a job as a worker at the railway depot, with the assistance of his uncle. In the urban setting, Anton's life is characterized by recklessness and debauchery. He indulges in gambling on borrowed money, pilfers from intoxicated individuals, and finds himself entangled in numerous precarious situations. Mitrofan, at the same time, with his fellow companions, guided by the prominent ideologist Ivan Mikhalych, engage in a clandestine existence. Anton reveals it and asks to take him into the case. Little did he know that this decision would inadvertently expose him to the captivating world of underground activities orchestrated by the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party.
One day, when Anton, along with Pyotr Polypov, also called Petka, who asked him to participate in a serious case, turns out to be "on the alert", gets into a police raid, and then into prison. As a result of the raid, Anton was detained and interrogated by Arnold Mikhalych Lakhnovsky, an investigator from Okhranka, the Security Department. The investigator tries to separate Anton and Petka, brutally beating one with a whip, and persuades the other promising to let him go back to his father. Petka's father, a shopkeeper, complains to Demyan that Antoshka from Mikhaylovka knocked his only heir off the right path.
Lakhnovsky presents Anton with the opportunity to betray the underground fighters, but Anton remains steadfast and refuses to do so. As a result, he is handed over to the executioner Kosorotov. Despite facing intense torture, Anton remains unyielding and refuses to give in. In a similar vein, Ivan Mikhailovich Subbotin, another member of the underground resistance, also endures torture without succumbing to betrayal. Unfortunately, the situation takes a turn for the worse as Lakhnovsky manages to successfully manipulate Pyotr Polipov, a bright and promising young man who is currently enrolled in the prestigious gymnasium, into betraying his own comrades.
Episode 2: A Night Before Dawn
It is 1914. After a few years, the village is still divided between poor peasants living in small huts and wealthy villagers in large homes. Some work tirelessly and struggle to make ends meet, while others enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. Mikhail Lukich Kaftanov, in particular, lives a life of indulgence and is not restrained by any limits. Despite this, rumors circulate that Zara, a gypsy, is pregnant with Kaftanov's child, causing distress to his elderly and ailing wife. However, Zara is actually in love with Polycarp and currently resides with his mother. Meanwhile, Anna, Kaftanov's daughter, and Ivan Savelyev, a stable boy, are in love with each other, although Anna is aware that their relationship has no future.
Ivan Savelyev, working as a stable boy under the employment of Kaftanov, finds himself deeply infatuated with none other than Anna, the daughter of his employer. On the other hand, Fyodor, the brother of Polycarp Kruzhilin, develops a strong desire to be associated with the affluent individual, Kaftanov, and he too becomes enamored with Anna. Meanwhile, as the narrative unfolds, Polycarp makes a triumphant return from the front lines.
In the city, Anton Savelyev, who has successfully managed to flee from the clutches of penal servitude (called in Russian katorga), marries a woman named Liza. This momentous occasion is graced by the presence of another individual named Polipov, who finds himself entangled in the intricate web of love for Liza. Polypov provides Anton with the location details of a secure hideout, intending to set him up for an arrest. However, against all odds, Anton manages to successfully evade capture and makes a daring escape. Once more, Agent Lakhnovsky endeavors to persuade Polypov to betray Anton, resulting in the latter's subsequent arrest.
As Silantiy Savelyev and his son Fyodor toil away on Kaftanov's zaimka (a particular kind of rural estate in Siberia), Fyodor can't help but feel a sense of longing and admiration for the exciting and lively existence that Kaftanov leads in that very place. In the midst of a heated exchange between a son and his father, an unexpected visitor by the name of Anton, notorious for repeatedly fleeing from prison, suddenly appears at the zaimka.
Episode 3: What Do You Believe In?
Anton Savelyev manages to escape from prison once again and makes his way to his father's house. However, news has already spread from the city to the village that the escaped convict may be in the area. Kaftanov and his assistant Demyan, along with the gendarmes, are sent to capture Anton. But when they arrive at the house, Anton is no longer there. He had just arrived recently but had to flee with the help of Fyodor, who noticed the raid. The gendarmes search the house for Anton and Demyan discovers evidence of blood, leading him to believe that Anton was there recently. Demyan Inyutin decides to find Anton by tracking Fyodor, who he believes is bringing supplies and medicine to his wounded brother in the mountains.
As Fyodor diligently makes his way towards his brother, bearing a load of sustenance, little does he know that he is being meticulously pursued by Demyan and his formidable soldiers. Relentlessly, they trail Fyodor until they finally close in on him, and it is at this moment that Demyan, with a menacing glint in his eyes, brazenly brandishes the threat of taking Fyodor's life. Overwhelmed by a sudden surge of selflessness and compassion, Anton willingly exposes himself to the danger that looms and surrenders.
Inyutin, devising a plan to unite his son Kiryan in matrimony with Anna, the daughter of Kaftanov, takes it upon himself to manipulate the situation by pressuring Fyodor to engage in a scandalous act that will bring shame upon Anfisa, the village midwife, whose daughter Kiryan is deeply enamored with. Anfisa experiences genuine and deep feelings of love for Fyodor, and as their relationship progresses, she eventually musters up the courage to disclose to him the life-altering news that she is carrying their child. Upon discovering that Anfisa has betrayed him by engaging in a romantic relationship with Fyodor, Kiryan feels compelled to inform Ivan about this disloyalty. Together, fueled by a mix of anger and hurt, they decide to teach Fyodor a lesson. However, their hopes of overpowering Fyodor are quickly shattered as he possesses a physical strength that surpasses both of them. Fyodor and Anna, who have harbored deep feelings for each other for a considerable period, finally cross paths in the yard of Anna's dwelling. Fyodor boldly declares his profound affection for her, his heart bursting with love. However, Anna, being privy to the whispered tales circulating within the village about Fyodor's existing connection with Anfisa, initially greets his proclamation with a sense of wariness and skepticism. Yet, as Fyodor persists in his earnest pleas and heartfelt entreaties, Anna's defenses gradually crumble, ultimately succumbing to the overwhelming power of her own emotions, leading her to reciprocate Fyodor's love confession.
Kaftanov visits Polycarp Kruzhilin's house and initiates a conversation about politics and the future of Russia. "What do you want? And what do you believe in?" – Kaftanov asks. Polycarp replies: "I believe in people whom you consider to be dirt". According to Kaftanov, who is known as the "enemy of labor", the entire planet will be drenched in blood. In response to this grim statement, Kruzhilin, speaking on behalf of the hardworking people, firmly asserts that they are willing to sacrifice their own blood without hesitation.
The village is filled with the news of the Tsar's abdication, which is brought by Kaftanov from the district town of Shantarsk. Kaftanov, being the first to hear about it, becomes the bearer of this significant development. Kaftanov shares with Demyan Inyutin the information regarding a revolution that is currently taking place in Russia. He expresses his belief that the news of this revolution will not reach their remote location in the wilderness for some time, allowing them the opportunity to take action and make the necessary preparations. With this, Kaftanov optimistically anticipates that they will be able to resolve any potential issues and restore stability in due course. After being informed by Demyan, Kaftanov becomes aware of the romantic involvement between Anna and Fyodor. Acting upon Demyan's suggestion, Kaftanov decides to personally witness Anna's secret meeting with Fyodor one evening during the cold winter season. Despite not having her father's approval, Anna is determined to marry Fyodor. When Kaftanov becomes aware of this, he unexpectedly exclaims, "I bestow my blessing upon you!" His words are swiftly followed by an act of violence as he lashes Fyodor with a whip. As if that wasn't enough, Kaftanov then cruelly commands his loyal servant, Demyan, to release the ferocious dogs upon Fyodor, resulting in a horrifying and brutal attack. Just as all hope seems lost, Polycarp emerges. With a commanding presence, he fearlessly steps forward, his voice booming as he orders the dogs to retreat. The dogs, recognizing his power, reluctantly follow his command and move away. Quickly, he grabs his rifle and without any hesitation, he targets one of the dogs and shoots it. The dog drops dead on the ground.
Episode 4: Mutiny
In the winter of 1918 in Siberia, a counter-revolutionary rebellion erupts after Soviet power had been established. The Czechoslovak Corps stationed in Tomsk joins the rebellion, along with forces from the old regime. The Bolshevik power is forced underground, and the Whites, who have newly come to power, establish their own order. Anton Savelyev and his wife Liza, along with their young son, are arrested by Lakhnovsky upon their arrival. Polipov offers to take Anton's place in jail in exchange for Liza and the child's freedom. Meanwhile, in the village Kaftanov, volunteer kulaks gather to capture the commissar Polycarp Kruzhilin.
In his quest to seek power and dominance, Kaftanov has assembled a formidable group of bandits under his command. With a nefarious agenda in mind, he mercilessly launches fierce assaults on the unsuspecting villages situated in the vicinity of Shantarsk. Anfisa, who hastily fled from a neighboring village called Mikhaylovka, brings alarming news of a horrific incident that unfolded within its boundaries. According to her account, a man named Kaftanov ruthlessly took the lives of the chairman of the village Council and his innocent, pregnant wife. Now, in an unprecedented display of brutality, Kaftanov and his formidable detachment are menacingly making their way towards this village, driven by a sinister motive to annihilate Village Council chairman, Pankrat Nazarov, along with his family. Moreover, their nefarious intentions extend to the chairman of the executive committee, Polycarp Kruzhilin, and his trusted assistant, Yakov Aleynikov, who also find themselves in grave danger. Anna entered the rundown hut where Kruzhilin, Aleynikov, Nazarov, and Anfisa had sought refuge, and she brought Pankrat's family with her, providing them a safe haven in her own house. Anfisa, using her persuasive skills, managed to convince Kiryan, who happened to be present, to assist in hiding Kruzhilin, Aleynikov, and herself in the Inyutins' residence. Although hesitant at first, Kiryan eventually succumbed to Anfisa's convincing arguments and agreed to help. Kruzhilin and Aleynikov successfully infiltrate Inyutin's house and disarm Demyan, taking control of him. They bring him to the cellar. Polycarp and Aleynikov hide in the shadows to stay unnoticed. Kaftanov arrives and encounters Kiryan, who creates a story to divert suspicion. Kiryan explains that Demyan chased after an unfamiliar person, explaining his absence. The next day, Fedor refuses to reveal the fugitives' whereabouts. Out of anger and frustration, Kaftanov orders the brutal flogging of his own brother Ivan in front of Fedor to force him to talk. This serves as a reminder of Kaftanov's determination to achieve his goals.
Anton makes his way to Novo-Nikolaevsk after his journey from Tomsk, just as the uprising is about to commence. Eagerly anticipating his arrival, Lisa and her young son plan to rendezvous with him at the station. However, the city is already in the clutches of White Guard rebels, who have taken control of the authorities and are fervently apprehending both their leaders and Bolsheviks. Polipov, aware of the dangerous situation, implores Liza to stay home and avoid the station. Despite her husband's pleas, Liza defiantly disregards his wishes, determined to reunite with her beloved spouse. Thus, she embarks on the journey alongside her son, braving the chaotic streets and the looming threat of rebellion. As Anton and his family finally meet at the station, their long-awaited reunion is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of Lakhnovsky, who, unbeknownst to them, has already pledged his allegiance to the rebels and taken on the role of an investigator. With an iron grip, he seizes Anton, his wife, and their innocent son, casting a dark shadow over their once joyous reunion.
Pyotr Polipov makes his way to Lakhnovsky's residence, where he is warmly greeted by Lakhnovsky and introduced to his wife and daughter, named Polina. Polipov reminds Lakhnovsky of the promise he made to refrain from harming Liza Savelyeva and her young son. In response, Lakhnovsky explains that it has become difficult to obtain the crucial testimony from Anton, and thus, he feels compelled to apply pressure by involving his own family. Lakhnovsky then proposes a plan to Polipov, suggesting that they use Anton's vulnerability to extract the necessary information. With Polipov silently agreeing to the proposal, Lakhnovsky orders for him to be apprehended, subjected to physical abuse, and ultimately placed in Anton's confinement.
During the interrogation, Lakhnovsky insists that Anton reveal the possible hiding places of the leaders of the Tomsk Bolshevik underground. Once again, Anton refuses to answer any questions, prompting Lakhnovsky to order the torture of his wife and son right in front of him. Even Peter Polipov, an informant and agent provocateur planted by Lakhnovsky in Anton's cell, was unable to extract any information from Anton. Witnessing the torture of Anton's wife, Lisa, whom Peter is deeply infatuated with, and their young son, Polipov attempts to say something, but Anton commands him to remain silent.
Lakhnovsky issues the chilling order for Anton to face a firing squad. However, fate intervenes when an unexpected ally, one of Anton's escorts, is swayed by a hefty bribe from the underground Bolsheviks. This turncoat assists Anton in a daring escape, defying Lakhnovsky's cruel intentions. With the help of his comrades, Anton manages to make a triumphant return to the city of Tomsk, where a warm embrace awaits him. Meanwhile, Subbotin, displaying an unexpected sense of compassion, announces that he will personally ensure the well-being of his wife, who has unfortunately succumbed to a mental disorder during her time in prison, as well as Anton's young son.
The partisan detachment, led by Kruzhilin and Nazarov, finds itself being relentlessly pursued by a group of punishers from the White Guard. Fyodor, Anna, Kiryan, and Anfisa, along with the assistance of Silanty Savelyev, form a close-knit detachment. Together, they devise a plan to seek refuge in a formidable gorge, a place so well-hidden and fortified that only a few soldiers are needed to guard its entrance. The detachment finds itself trapped within the gorge due to the presence of the White Guards effectively guarding the only exit. Colonel Zubov, who holds the position of commander over the regiment relentlessly pursuing the partisans, makes a dire decision by commanding the execution of Pankrat Nazarov, a member of the detachment who has been apprehended. Kaftanov entrusts Ivan Savelyev with the duty of executing the order to shoot Pankrat. Additionally, Kaftanov extends an invitation to Colonel Zubov, who currently has his young son Petya in his care, to take some time off and relax at his farm. Meanwhile, Silanty Savelyev, who guided the partisans to safety in the stone shelter, and his wife Ustinya are presented before Zubov. In response, Colonel Zubov issues a command for both of them to be hanged...
Episode 5: Inside the Stone Bag
The White Guard colonel Zubov is unhappy that the Reds were not captured and executed. The Reds are now hiding in the mountains, but Kaftanov explains that they have nowhere to go as they are trapped. They will either starve or be surrounded and captured. Ivan is ordered to kill old Nazarov, but he cannot bring himself to do it and instead releases him. Ivan then pleads with the colonel to spare his parents, who have been sentenced to hang for helping the partisans, but the colonel refuses. Meanwhile, the Red partisans in the mountains have little chance of survival – they will have to fight their way out.
Pankrat calls Ivan to go with him to the partisans. At the same time Ivan, who fears that his brother Fyodor will kill him because he joined the gang in the hope that Kaftanov will give him his daughter Anna as a wife, refuses. Before Pankrat leaves, Ivan asks him if Anna and Fyodor are living as husband and wife. Pankrat replies that they do not, but that there is love between Anna and Fyodor.
By order of Zubov, Savelyev's father and mother are to be hanged because Silanty helped the partisans to escape. Ivan begs Colonel Zubov to pardon his parents, but the colonel is adamant: the execution must take place immediately. Demyan Inyutin lures Ivan into a barn, stuns him and locks him in. At the last moment Zubov orders his mother to be pardoned, but the order to execute his father remains in force. The execution is observed by Yakov Aleynikov, whom the partisans had brought down on reins at night from a steep hill for reconnaissance. Ivan, who escaped from the barn, arrives in Mikhailovka when the execution has already taken place. Aleynikov returns to the detachment by the same way that he got out, tells about Silanty's execution, and also about the fact that by the same way it is possible to bring down enough fighters to break the guards at the entrance to the gorge and attack Kaftanov's camp, where Colonel Zubov with a small guard and Kaftanov himself are. Then you can attack Zubov's regiment, which is stationed in Mikhailovka. Fyodor, having learned about his father's execution, dreams of getting to Vanka and taking revenge on him.
The partisans rappel down the steep slope from the entrance to the impregnable gorge, kill the guards at the entrance to the gorge and suddenly attack a detachment of the whites in zaimka. They are joined by Pankrat Nazarov, who is freed by Ivan. In the battle at Kaftanov's camp, Aleynikov enters the fray with Colonel Zubov, but the colonel is more skillful at checkers and seriously wounds Yakov, chopping his face. Fyodor enters the fight and kills the colonel and wants to kill his underage son Petya, but the boy is covered by Ivan, who pushes Zubov's son out of the house and follows him out himself. Kaftanov and part of the gang, as well as Ivan and Colonel Zubov's son, manage to escape and hide. At the same time Kaftanov captures Anna, who broke into the house, and takes her away with him. At his other camp Kaftanov offers Ivan to take Anna as his wife, but Ivan refuses to take Anna by force. Then Kaftanov orders Kosorotov to dishonor his own daughter for her association with the partisans. Ivan kills Demyan Inyutin and Kaftanov, and brings the dishonored Anna to the partisans.
Episode 6: Homecoming
It is 1925. After the Soviet power was fully established, life in rural areas is gradually improving, but there are still many issues, with hunger being the main problem. The communes did not have the desired outcome, so the authorities suggest that the peasants form collective farms (called in Russian kolkhoz). Ivan, who has served his sentence for being in Kaftanov's gang, is released. After leaving the camp, Ivan meets Agatha. Their chance meeting is destined to grow into love and family.
Anfisa marries Kiryan, but she still loves her former lover Fyodor. However, Fyodor is already married to Anna, who is the daughter of the murdered Kaftanov. Taking advantage of the situation, Lakhnovsky's gang sets fire to the houses of the Red Communards at night, and those who escape the flames are ordered to be shot. The Savelyevs' house burns down, but Ivan and his wife Agatha, who has returned after several years, rebuild it. However, Fyodor refuses to let his brother live in their parents' house.
Anfisa remains Fyodor's mistress. Kiryan finds out about this, which causes him considerable suffering.
Gangs roam the forests, one of which is led by Lakhnovsky. He is joined by Colonel Zubov's son Pyotr, Kaftanov's son Makar and former prison guard and Kaftanov's accomplice Kosorotov. They burn villages, trying to kill the communards. Just that evening, when a collective farm meeting is held in Mikhailovka, the gang attacks the village, burns houses and kills people. Yakov Aleynikov, a former Red partisan who is now an OGPU (later NKVD) officer, promises Kruzhilin to catch Lakhnovsky after the bandits retreat.
Ivan and his wife Agata return to Mikhailovka just after the pogrom organized by Lakhnovsky's gang. He is met with hateful glances from his fellow villagers. Nevertheless, Pankrat Nazarov meets Ivan kindly and allows him to stay in the village in his father's dilapidated house.
Kruzhilin notices that something wrong is going on with Fyodor Savelyev, who now works as postmaster in Shantarsk: he has ruined the work of the post office, and together with other volunteers did not go to destroy Lakhnovsky's gang. Polycarp openly tells Fyodor that he knows about his connection with Kiryan Inotin's wife and demands to stop this connection. Fyodor responds by asking to be relieved of his post as postmaster: he has decided to return to Mikhailovka. Fyodor takes Kiryan and Anfisa to Mikhailovka with him.
Having returned to Mikhailovka, Fyodor, appointed head of the local branch of Zagotskot, kicks Ivan and his wife out of his father's house and occupies it with his family. Pankrat Nazarov tries to reason with Fyodor, but he stands his ground. In addition, he declares to Anna that he knows that she married him not as a virgin, and he is sure that their first son is not from him, but from Ivan. Anna tries to convince Fyodor that this is not true, but she cannot confess who scolded her honor. Gossip spreads through the village about Fyodor's love affair with Anfisa. Kiryan, seeing and hearing all this, is gradually becoming an alcoholic.
Ivan is forced to live in a dugout with Agatha and her child. Fyodor comes to them and demands that Ivan and his family leave Mikhailovka, then he picks a fight with Ivan and tears his shabby clothes. Agatha defends her husband, pounces on Fyodor, tears off his jacket and carries him away. Fyodor warns Ivan never to meet either his son Syomka or Anna. Ivan tells Fyodor in his eyes that he, too, knows about his relationship with Anfisa. In response, as head of the Zagotskot branch in Mikhailovka, Fyodor dismisses Ivan from his position as a shepherd. Agata suggests Ivan to fulfill Fyodor's demand and leave the village, but Ivan does not want to leave his native village.
The year is 1933. Ivan comes to Pankrat, who has become chairman of the kolkhoz, and asks him to accept him and his family into the kolkhoz. Pankrat tells Ivan that Yakov Aleynikov has warned him that he is against Ivan's admission to the collective farm: Aleynikov still does not believe that Ivan is not an enemy at all, but an honest man. Pankrat promises Ivan to accept him into the collective farm after the winter is over. Yakov Aleynikov manages to capture and arrest Lakhnovsky and Colonel Zubov's son Pyotr. They are sent to Novosibirsk – formerly Novonikolayevsk – by order of Polycarp Kruzhilin. Yakov tells Polycarp that Lakhnovsky's assistant Kosorotov and his associates could not be captured, and he is hiding somewhere. Aleynikov sets out in search of him.
Kaftanov's son Makar, together with his assistant, is going to "rob" the store in an armed robbery. Makar takes a revolver from Kosorotov. Kosorotov now lives under a different lastname – Ogorodnikov, and also adopted a girl Masha. Ivan in Mikhailovka meets for the first time with Fyodor's son Syomka and his girlfriend Vera Inyutina, the daughter of Kiryan and Anfisa.
After the end of winter, a collective farm meeting is held to discuss the admission of Ivan and his family to the collective farm. Kaftanov's former mistress Lushka Kashkarova recalls how Ivan once took away her moonshine for Kaftanov and swung a whip at her. Nevertheless, the collective farm meeting does not consider this significant and accepts Ivan into the collective farm. Fyodor, who is also present at the meeting, observes the voting results with obvious displeasure.
Episode 7: On The Native Land
Petr Petrovich Polipov has recently assumed the prestigious position of being the leader of the party committee at the regional level. Anton Savelyev emerges as a prominent industrialist, playing a significant role in the manufacturing sector of Ukraine. Polipov reaches out to Polycarp Kruzhilin, urgently appealing for his assistance in gathering food to aid the suffering population of the Volga region who are plagued by hunger and malnutrition. According to Kruzhilin's account, the village is currently experiencing a famine as the potatoes harvested have proved to be insufficient in quantity. In response to this distressing report, Polipov, displaying a glimmer of compassion and empathy, issues a crucial command: half of the remaining potatoes are to be distributed among the villagers, providing them with some temporary relief. In an attempt to instill hope and offer reassurance, Polipov pledges to dispatch aid and assistance to the village as soon as possible, ensuring that their immediate needs are met and that they are not left to suffer in despair.
Polina Arnoldovna Lakhnovskaya approaches Polipov with incredible news – her father has miraculously escaped being shot and is alive! Not only that, but he vividly recollects every single act of kindness and assistance that Peter selflessly rendered him. It is purported that she has consistently harbored deep affection for Peter, continuing to love him and desiring a future together. The revelation that Lakhnovsky is still alive has instilled fear within Polipov.
Yakov Aleynikov, upon discovering that Pankrat Nazarov has made the decision to include Ivan in the collective farm, travels all the way to Mikhailovka to confront Pankrat about his previous warning against accepting Ivan as a member. Yakov demands a thorough explanation from Pankrat, seeking to understand why he would go against his advice. In response, Pankrat explains that he is in dire need of laborers for the collective farm and believes that Ivan would be a valuable addition. As this conversation unfolds, Fyodor, who happens to be present at Pankrat's board, keenly observes the entire exchange, seizing the opportunity to absorb the information and potentially act upon it. Following his discussion with Nazarov, Aleynikov proceeds to inform the individuals constituting the bureau of the District Committee, as well as Kruzhilin, regarding Ivan Savelyev's acceptance into the ranks of the collective farm. Kruzhilin claims that he was the one who gave permission for Ivan to join the collective farm. However, Aleynikov remains adamant in his belief that Ivan is an adversary. In response, Kruzhilin reminds Aleynikov that his actions are in direct violation of revolutionary laws and regulations. Despite Kruzhilin's plea, Aleynikov pays no heed to his words and decides to depart from the district committee.
Polina, who is believed to be the daughter of the supposedly shot Lakhnovsky, was first spotted by Polipov when he visited Lakhnovsky's residence during the uprising of the White Guard. Unexpectedly, Polina arrives at Polipov's house and reveals the astonishing news that her father is, in fact, still alive. Polipov is extremely displeased with this news. He had believed that Lakhnovsky had been fatally shot, which would have ensured that his own activities as an informant for the guards and White Guard counter-intelligence remained a secret. Now, Polipov fears that the truth will come to light and his role in providing information will be exposed. Following the transmission, Polina expresses her deep affection towards Polipov. In response, Polipov's mind wanders back to the regrettable instance where he betrayed Anton and several other fellow Bolsheviks. As the events unfold, Polina unexpectedly finds herself in the comforting embrace of Polipov's bed. Overwhelmed with emotions, she bravely proclaims her readiness to commit to a lifetime of love and companionship as Pyotr's devoted wife. His main concern is that if people discover his marital status with Lakhnovsky's daughter, it could potentially jeopardize his thriving party career. However, Polina offers him reassurance by disclosing that she has already experienced marriage previously and currently goes by a different last name.
A new movie and a newsreel are brought to Mikhailovka. Taking charge of the situation, Pankrat, the responsible figure in charge of the collective farm's finances, gives specific instructions to the farm's accountant to cover the expenses of a movie show for all the hardworking farmers. With great enthusiasm, the collective farmers eagerly gather in the local club, eager to experience the magic of the silver screen. As the lights dim and the projector starts rolling, the farmers find themselves captivated by the newsreel playing on the screen. To their amazement, they witness one of their own, Anton Savelyev, showcased as the leader of a prominent tractor factory. The pride swells within the hearts of the villagers, especially Fyodor and Ivan, who are overcome with joy at the sight of their very own brother achieving such success. In the days that follow, the news of Anton's success spreads like wildfire throughout the village. The story becomes a topic of conversation among the farmers, fueling their aspirations and fueling a collective sense of ambition. The impact of that movie show lingers long after the credits roll, forever etching itself in the hearts and minds of the villagers of Mikhailovka. The unity and support among the villagers grow stronger as they witness firsthand the impact their hard work and dedication can have on their own lives and the community as a whole.
On a serene afternoon, Ivan and Anna serendipitously cross paths near the tranquil riverbank. Ivan, being responsible for the collective farm horses, has thoughtfully brought them to the river to quench their thirst. Syomka, the beloved offspring of Fyodor and Anna, eagerly assists Ivan in this task, displaying his innate love for animals. Curiosity sparks within Ivan as he engages in a conversation with Anna, genuinely interested in knowing how she fares in life. In a tone tinged with melancholy, Anna reluctantly confesses that she lives well, although her countenance betrays the truth behind her words – a poignant reality that her living conditions are far from satisfactory.
Fyodor receives a letter from Anton, his older brother, who kindly requests that he tries to maintain a harmonious relationship with Ivan. Unfortunately, another argument erupts between Fyodor and Anna, during which Anna boldly declares that Fyodor is utterly insignificant compared to Ivan. Deeply hurt by this statement, Fyodor becomes determined to once again ruin Ivan's life. He cunningly manipulates Kiryan into stealing the horses from the collective farm and selling them to gypsies. To make matters worse, Fyodor plans to falsely accuse Ivan of this theft. In exchange for his cooperation, Fyodor makes a promise to Kiryan that he will cease his involvement with Anfisa, whom Kiryan deeply cares for. Hoping that Fyodor will honor his word, Kiryan reluctantly agrees to assist him in his devious scheme.
Aleynikov arrives at the vast fields of the collective farm, bustling with the diligent labor of all the hardworking collective farmers. In a shocking turn of events, he publicly apprehends Ivan based on the unfounded allegation made by Kiryan Inyutin, accusing him of stealing the precious collective farm horses. Amidst the commotion, Kolkhoznik Arkashka Molchun steps forward, desperate to shed light on the truth. He bravely asserts that it was actually Kiryan who surreptitiously absconded with the valuable horses and sold them to the gypsies. However, Aleynikov, clouded by suspicion and distrust, firmly believes that Molchun is colluding with Ivan in an attempt to shield him from the consequences of his actions. Succumbing to his misguided convictions, Aleynikov decides to apprehend both Ivan and Arkashka Molchun, leading them away from the bewildered crowd.
Nazarov informs Kruzhilin about the arrest of Ivan, which prompts Kruzhilin to summon Aleynikov to the District Committee for further discussion on the matter. As members of the bureau engage in a dialogue with Aleynikov, they attempt to rationalize and make him understand that his actions are in direct violation of socialist legality. However, Aleynikov remains steadfast in his beliefs and staunchly asserts that the members of the District Committee have become complacent in their political vigilance. In response, Kruzhilin issues an order for Aleynikov to release both Ivan and Molchun from custody. Despite this directive, Aleynikov adamantly refuses to comply and instead abruptly departs from the District Committee.
Fyodor, accompanied by Inyutin after their trip to Shantarsk, seems reluctant to utter a word, while the slightly intoxicated Kiryan boldly declares that nobody has succeeded in finding evidence against him. Furthermore, Kiryan reveals that Ivan, who finds himself entangled in legal matters, has been transported to Novosibirsk to face a trial.
Ivan and Arkady Molchun were handed down lengthy prison sentences, which came as a devastating blow. In an attempt to console Agatha, Pankrat Nazarov offered words of reassurance, expressing his disbelief in Ivan's guilt. However, he also emphasized the importance of Agatha's ability to move forward and not harbor any anger towards others. Pankrat stressed the necessity for Agatha to remain connected with people, refusing to isolate herself from society.
Syomka Savelyev, Fyodor and Anna's son, tells the villagers at home about the conversation between them, who believe that it was Fyodor who put Ivan in prison. After this conversation Fyodor decides to go to Shantarsk to work at the MTS, and tells Anna to pack. He calls Kiryan with him, saying that now he will have no life in Mikhailovka, because he helped to put Ivan in prison. However, Fedor really needs Anfisa, not Kiryan's safety. Kiryan demands that Fyodor leave Anfisa, telling Fyodor that it was Fyodor who put Ivan in prison, that Kiryan himself acted on his orders. Kiryan agrees to leave Mikhailovka with Anfisa, following Fyodor.
The members of the district committee's bureau paid a visit to Aleynikov's NKVD office for an inspection. They requested to see the cases and materials that were being worked on. In response, Aleynikov contacted Kruzhilin and informed him that he would not be handing over any files or materials to the commission. Kruzhilin assured Aleynikov that he would report his behavior to both the regional party committee and the regional NKVD department. In the regional center, Kruzhilin spent several hours being interrogated by the NKVD about the Savelyev family. During this time, Aleynikov entered the room and Kruzhilin openly accused him of orchestrating the humiliating interrogation through the investigator from the regional NKVD department. He also promised to bring this matter to the attention of the bureau of the district committee. As a result, Aleynikov began to have doubts about whether his actions with Ivan were actually justified.
Kruzhilin approaches Subbotin, who holds a position in the Kraykom, seeking an explanation for the mistreatment he endured at the hands of the NKVD. However, Subbotin is equally perplexed and unable to comprehend the reasons behind such unjust actions occurring within their own country. Returning to the district, Kruzhilin coincidentally encounters Pankrat Nazarov once again at the stone ford, a place of their previous escape from the oppressive White Guard forces. Pankrat inquires about Ivan, expressing that he believes Ivan holds no responsibility for their current predicament, as it was actually Fyodor who betrayed him. Both Kruzhilin and Pankrat find themselves bewildered by Fyodor's actions towards his own brother, unable to fathom his motivations. Pankrat suggests promoting Agata to the position of brigadier or relocating her to the dairy farm, but Kruzhilin insists that no actions should be taken regarding Agata at this moment.
Fyodor, accompanied by his entire family, embarks on a journey to Shantarsk. As he prepares to depart from the comfort of his home, Pankrat, a close friend welcoming him at the gate, expresses his genuine relief that Fyodor is finally leaving behind the mundane surroundings of Mikhailovka.
Episode 8: Ordeal
Fyodor is determined to have his brother Ivan apprehended as he seeks to exact revenge for Ivan's inability to prevent their father, Silantiy Savelyev, from being executed. However, in a cruel twist of events, Ivan finds himself wrongfully blamed by Fyodor, who cunningly receives assistance from Kiryan. Interestingly, Kiryan harbors a deep desire where he envisions a future where his beloved wife, Anfisa, is no longer entangled in any way with Fyodor. It is worth noting that this desire becomes the ultimate compensation for Kiryan's involvement in the deceitful plot.
Agatha is in a confusing situation and is unable to uncover the truth she seeks. She turns to Polipov for help, hoping he can provide some clarity. However, she soon realizes that Polipov is unable to influence the decisions made by those in power, which leaves her feeling more frustrated and helpless. As Agatha confides in Polipov, she learns that he is also dealing with his own fears of being exposed. He knows that there are parts of his past that aren't completely clean, and this realization worries him. To protect his reputation and avoid scrutiny, Polipov decides he must get rid of Koshkin and Baulin, who have started questioning the truthfulness of his biography. This adds to the complexity of Agatha's search for the truth as she navigates through the web of deception surrounding Polipov. She is faced with not only understanding her own difficult situation but also dealing with the complicated relationships of those involved in her search for answers. Time is running out and it feels like the truth is becoming harder to find. As a threatening situation approaches Kruzhilin, Subbotin quickly moves him to a safe place. At the same time, Agatha and her child seek help from Anton Savelyev.
Agatha travels to Kharkov to inform Anton about Ivan's tragic fate. Anton reaches out to Subbotin for help, but Subbotin can't provide any answers. Despite this, Anton and Lisa invite Agatha to live with them, but she declines and decides to go back home. She spends her days on the road hoping to find Ivan. Ivan is still not present, which makes Agatha even more upset and yearning for him. However, Subbotin, who is also the secretary of the regional committee, decides to safeguard his old friend Kruzhilin from possible persecution. To guarantee Kruzhilin's safety, Subbotin organizes his relocation to Oirotia, located in the beautiful Gorny Altai.
It seems that Syomka Savelyev and Verka Inyutina have developed a romantic connection.
Instead of Kruzhilin, Polipov takes over the position of secretary of the district committee. With a firm grip, he intensifies control and shows no mercy in his efforts to eradicate any mismanagement within the collective farms, going as far as depleting even the essential seed funds.
Mass purges are organized in the party, including among the communists of the Shantarsky district. To consolidate his position Polipov is trying to take advantage of this. This is well understood by the members of the bureau of the district committee, but they cannot resist Polipov: he uses the NKVD bodies and Yakov Aleynikov in his interests.
Aleynikov, confident in his position as an honest Communist, arrests Khlebnikov on Polipov's tip-off. Being frightened by Baulin's question, who asked Koshkin how Polipov managed to free himself from death row (which Polipov keeps mentioning), Pyotr Petrovich threatens to deprive Baulin and Koshkin of Party membership for their allegedly poor management of the district's economic organizations, which inevitably may also lead to their arrest with more tragic consequences for them.
Aleynikov tells Polipov about Lakhnovsky's assistant Kosorotov, who is still hiding unknown.
In Shantarsk, subbotniks are organized to build different facilities; most of the locals hang out there. Anfisa and Fyodor continue to develop their love. Kiryan becomes increasingly depressed.
Aleynikov arrests Kosorotov, who lives under the lastname of Ogorodnikov. This arrest is seen by Mania Ogorodnikova and Vera Inyutina, adopted by Kosorotov. Teachers and schoolchildren turn away from Mania Ogorodnikova as the daughter of the arrested "enemy of the people". And only the school principal congratulates Mania on this event at the presentation of her matriculation certificate. Vera Inyutina does not seem to leave Mania with her attention, although she did not even sit next to her at the celebration.
According to the results of the inspection of the organizations headed by Koshkin and Baulin, Polipov satisfies the Bureau of the District Committee. Baulin and Koshkin convincingly prove that Polipov is actually ruining collective farms and the district as a whole. Polipov directly speaks about the necessity to expel Baulin and Koshkin from the Party, but the members of the Bureau of the District Committee rebel against Polipov's position. The position of the bureau of the District Committee is supported by Aleynikov. At the same time, Polipov continues to bend his line and asks Aleynikov to "take a closer look" at Baulin and Koshkin.
Aleynikov's wife is trying to persuade him to quit his job at the NKVD. She believes that he is not actually arresting enemies, but being manipulated by Polipov for his own benefit. During their conversation, they receive news about a fire in Mikhailovka which destroyed a combine harvester and injured Syomka Savelyev. An informant named Anikey Yelizarov claims that the fire was caused by Fyodor Savelyev, the assistant to the combine harvester. Aleynikov and his wife, who is a doctor, decide to go to Mikhailovka. Syomka tells Aleynikov's wife that the fire was caused by lightning striking the combine's trailer with straw, and this is confirmed by Kiryan Inyutin. Despite Anikey Yelizarov's attempts to convince Aleynikov that it was sabotage, the evidence does not support this theory. Fyodor is willing to be arrested, but Aleynikov decides not to arrest him and leaves.
Vera Inyutina continues her relationship with Semyon, but apparently has no serious intentions towards him. Semyon, meanwhile, is seriously attracted to Vera.
Aleynikov gets a call from an investigator of the NKVD who is interested in Baulin and Koshkin, as their activities are seen as anti-Soviet. Aleynikov defends them, saying they are loyal to socialism. Polipov convinces Aleynikov to talk to Baulin and Koshkin in his office. During the conversation, Baulin and Koshkin argue that Aleynikov is illegally arresting people and Polipov is causing problems in the district. They suggest that Aleynikov is being manipulated by Polipov. Aleynikov responds by emphasizing his dedication to the revolution and the security of the socialist state. After the conversation, Aleynikov's wife leaves him because she cannot understand his cruelty.
After arriving in Novosibirsk, Polipov talks to Subbotin, the regional committee's secretary. Polipov proudly tells Subbotin that he has exceeded the targets set by the State Supply Program. However, Subbotin tactfully redirects Polipov's attention to an important resolution passed by the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (b). This resolution emphasizes the need to stop unjustified repressions against party members, which Polipov has been doing. Subbotin discusses the urgency of restoring discipline within the party organizations. When Polipov sarcastically suggests that Subbotin is at risk of burning out from his job, Subbotin reveals that the regional committee has decided to evaluate all party organizations in the region. Interestingly, they will start with the Shantarsky district, where Polipov is the first secretary.
Episode 9: The War Is Coming
Once again, Subbotin reaches out to Polycarp Kruzhilin, who is currently residing in Oirotia, summoning him to his office for a discussion. During their conversation, Subbotin proposes the idea of Polycarp returning to Shantarsk. However, it has been a couple of years since Polipov took charge of the district, and unfortunately, the situation is far from ideal. In the neighboring town of Mikhailovka, life continues to unfold as people go about their daily routines, getting married, having children, and ultimately passing away. Things in the world also do not give much hope for well-being, because fascism has crept up to the very borders of the USSR. Regrettably, Fedor has failed to honor his commitment to leave Kiryan's wife, Anfisa, and instead, has reignited their illicit relationship.
Agatha keeps going to the road and waiting for Ivan's return. When Kruzhilin began his tenure as party secretary, his first official trip led him to Mikhailovka. It was during this visit that he had the opportunity to meet Volodya, the son of Agata and Ivan. Additionally, Kruzhilin's encounter with Pankrat Nazarov occurred during this same trip. This particular meeting left a lasting impression on Kruzhilin, as it became abundantly clear to him that the conditions in the collective farms of the Shantarsky district were worse than ever before. Initially, Nazarov was cautious and skeptical of Kruzhilin, but over time, he gradually disclosed the harsh reality to the chairman of the District Committee. It was revealed that Polipov, the previous leader, had brought ruin to all the farms in the district. Despite this grim reality, the district's reporting consistently portrayed an entirely different and positive image, with the district consistently ranking first in terms of figures. It became evident that the kolkhozes were being plundered, with everything being swept away. As a result, the collective farms were left without proper resources, including fodder for the animals and fair payments for the collective farmers. In light of these distressing circumstances, Kruzhilin found himself contemplating potential solutions to improve the dire situation.
It was a sunny Sunday morning on June 22, 1941, when Anna and Fyodor's children excitedly prepared for a day of fishing. As they gathered their fishing gear and snacks, Semyon and his father Fyodor found themselves engaged in a profound conversation that would leave a lasting impact. In the midst of their conversation, Semyon expressed his observations to his father, noting that Fyodor often extended a helping hand to others, but seemingly only for a meager penny. Semyon, driven by a newfound sense of maturity and awareness, boldly demanded that his father start valuing his assistance more, urging him to expect a ruble or even more in return for his good deeds. As they packed up their fishing gear and made their way back home, Fyodor felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination. He vowed to his son, Semyon, that from that day forward, his acts of assistance would be fueled by compassion and selflessness, rather than monetary gain. Fyodor was committed to being a beacon of kindness in his community, inspiring others to embrace the true value of their actions, just as Semyon had inspired him. Despite being married, Fyodor continues to engage in infidelity with Anfisa. Prior to departing with Kiryan for the MTS, he arranges another rendezvous with Anfisa. Within the District Committee, Vera Inyutina holds the position of a secretary-machinist.
Aleynikov arrives at the District Committee to meet with Kruzhilin, but unfortunately, Polycarp is unable to connect him with any of the secretaries at the regional committee. Frustrated by the lack of communication, Kruzhilin informs Aleynikov that he is currently occupied with preparing a speech for an upcoming party meeting and cannot discuss matters with him at the moment. Meanwhile, Yakov approaches Polycarp and shares the news that Ivan Savelyev, who had previously been imprisoned, has been released and will be returning home either today or tomorrow. This information leaves Aleynikov questioning his own actions towards Ivan and the others who were arrested under his authority. However, Polycarp avoids discussing the matter with Yakov, indicating his reluctance to delve into this sensitive topic.
When Aleynikov inquires about Polycarp's work dynamics with Polipov, Polycarp responds in a vague and evasive manner, avoiding a direct answer. Yakov, noticing the need for assistance, suggests that Polycarp seek the aid of a typist to streamline his workload. In order to explore this option further, Kruzhilin recommends engaging in a conversation with Vera Inyutina, potentially providing valuable insights and guidance on the matter.
Once again, Agatha finds herself out on the open road, eagerly anticipating Ivan's return. However, this time, her long and anxious wait is met with sheer jubilation as her eyes catch sight of a figure in the distance, unmistakably Ivan. The serendipitous encounter occurs amidst the relentless downpour of a tumultuous thunderstorm, a weather event that took everyone by surprise. After the rain subsided, a vibrant rainbow arched across the vast expanse of the steppe and the dense forest. In that picturesque setting, Ivan and Agatha found themselves engrossed in an endless conversation, reminiscing about the past. Ivan fondly recalled the melodious songs of the larks that echoed through the barracks, evoking a sense of nostalgia within him. Agatha, on the other hand, shared her own experiences of raising her children, delving into the intricate details of their lives. She even disclosed the heartfelt story behind her daughter's name, a daughter whom Ivan had yet to meet since her birth. Curiosity gnawed at Ivan's mind, uncertain whether this precious addition to their family was a beautiful girl or a handsome boy. In this poignant scene, Ivan finds himself face to face with his own children, who sadly do not even recognize their own father. As he presents them with modest gifts and tenderly caresses them, Ivan's heart is burdened by the weight of Volodya's innocent yet piercing question: "Are you no longer considered an 'enemy of the people'?" The boy's genuine confusion stems from his inability to comprehend why his father had been imprisoned if he was not, in fact, an enemy. Overwhelmed by emotions, Ivan is momentarily at a loss for words, unable to provide an immediate answer to this complex inquiry.
Upon his return to Mikhailovka, Ivan Savelyev was greeted with anticipation. It was uncertain who would be eagerly awaiting his arrival, besides his devoted wife Agatha. The years of his absence had allowed their daughter Daria to blossom into a young woman, a fact that Ivan was completely unaware of due to his incarceration. In the midst of this tense atmosphere, Agatha rushes over to Pankrat and Ivan, urgently informing them about the outbreak of war. Without any hesitation, Anna explicitly expresses her wish for Fyodor to be enlisted in the war and meet his demise there. Despite Anna's cruel remark, Fyodor proceeds to embark on a romantic outing with Anfisa.
Anfisa, who has returned from her date with Fyodor and is trying to sneak into bed, is met at home by Kiryan. He is nearly at ease, his anger completely dissipated. Curious, he questions why she loves Fyodor with such a strong loyalty, almost like a dog. Anfisa retaliates by suggesting that only Kiryan can love in a more human-like manner, to which he calmly confirms that his love for her is indeed human. Kiryan admits to Anfisa that he was the one who delivered the kolkhoz horses to the gypsies and assisted Fyodor in imprisoning Ivan. Now, he feels remorse for his actions and worries about the repercussions it has had on Ivan. Additionally, the predicament of deciding the fate of a vast number of lawyers and artists further compounds the difficulty of managing the influx of evacuees. Despite the previous challenges that have been faced, there are still numerous obstacles yet to be overcome. Subbotin delivers the news to Kruzhilin that a decision has been made to relocate an agricultural machine-building plant to the town of Shantarsk. In response to this development, Anton Savelyev, the eldest among the brothers, makes his way to Shantarsk. He dedicates his time and efforts to the arduous task of restoring the plant that had been evacuated, and his determination pays off as he is eventually appointed as its director. Under his leadership, the plant undergoes a significant transformation, shifting its focus to the production of shells intended for the front lines of the ongoing conflict.
The order to start up the plant came unexpectedly, with the location being practically empty. In charge of overseeing these operations is Ivan Ivanovich Khokhlov, the chief engineer of the plant. In a tragic incident where a fire broke out, the eldest sibling of the Savelyev family, Anton, heroically sacrificed his own life while attempting to rescue others. This deeply affects Fyodor, prompting him to think about his own life and undergo a significant change. Filled with clarity and self-awareness, Fyodor decides to bravely go to the frontlines, prepared to face the difficulties and sacrifices that await him. Fyodor's wife, Anna, and their younger sons decide to relocate to the collective farm owned by Pankrat Nazarov. During a fierce and intense battle that took place in the vicinity of Kursk, the Dedyukhina tank sustained a direct hit. Semyon, who had suffered a concussion, joined forces with his uncle Ivan in aiding the artillerymen in their efforts to ward off the incoming enemy assault. In a series of unfortunate events, Semyon finds himself taken captive, leaving Ivan with the belief that he has met his untimely demise. Semyon finds himself trapped within the confines of Buchenwald, an infamous Nazi concentration camp known for its horrifying atrocities and inhuman treatment of prisoners. Peter Zubov, Maxim Nazarov, and Gubarev are also present, accompanying him.

His mother takes it upon herself to personally visit Polycarp Matveyevich, pleading with him to fulfill her son's request. She humbly beseeches him for assistance in acquiring a position at the library.
A fire occurs at a shell depot in Shantarsk. Despite the valiant efforts of the firemen, the flames prove to be insurmountable, subsequently propagating towards the nearby warehouses that house an ample supply of ammunition, meticulously arranged and ready to be dispatched to the battlefront. Tragically, it is during this chaotic ordeal that Anton Savelyev, the individual responsible for issuing the evacuation of the incendiary shells from the conflagrating warehouse, meets his untimely demise due to an unforeseen explosion.
Ivan and Semyon Savelyev together get to the front in a tank brigade. In the first battle, their crew hits 5 enemy tanks. Fyodor Savelyev, finally confused in life, goes to the front. The military unit, where he went, is defeated in battle. Fyodor surrenders as a prisoner of war.
Episode 2: Scorched Love
The year is 1943. Despite facing intense combat, the Red Army continues to make progress in penetrating the enemy's fortified lines. The tank brigade, composed of soldiers from Siberia who specialize in operating tanks, has been relocated from Kursk to Lukashevka. Their primary objective in this new location is to undertake the responsibility of excavating trenches and constructing defensive structures. During their leisure hours, tankers often visit the nearby village to become acquainted with the local girls, fostering new friendships and potentially even romantic relationships. Semyon Savelyev becomes acquainted with Olga Korolyova, developing a fondness for her. However, his desire to forge a deeper connection with her is hindered by the fact that Olga resides in a region under German occupation. This knowledge acts as a barrier, preventing Semyon from fully pursuing his feelings for her. Olga comprehends his uneasiness, yet her narrative diverges from that of other stunning women. There arises a requirement to locate a trustworthy individual of Russian descent who possesses a flawlessly pristine image in the eyes of the Soviet authorities, while also ensuring that they do not raise even the slightest hint of suspicion. The tasks that he will be performing are set to occur in remote areas within Russian territory, however, it is important to note that individuals who have voluntarily left their own country and joined his cause will not be considered as part of his team. Lakhnovsky undertakes the pursuit of locating his former instigator, Polipov.
Yakov Aleynikov, having successfully ascended the ranks in military counterintelligence, crosses paths with his cherished godson Peter Zubov, whose life he once guided towards a path of integrity and righteousness. Yakov is getting ready to lead a covert mission deep into enemy territory when he unexpectedly comes face to face with Ivan Savelyev, who also happens to be his godson. The twist is that Yakov had actually incarcerated Ivan in the past. Ivan shares with great concern and distress that his beloved nephew, Semyon, is currently missing in action and cannot be located. Lakhnovsky shares with Polipov a detailed account of the sinister plans concocted by the Western capitalist world, aimed at dismantling the Soviet Union and undermining the unwavering resilience of its people. These nefarious schemes, driven by avaricious and self-centered intentions, seek to obliterate the very foundations of the Soviet Union, leaving its proud nation and its citizens vulnerable and oppressed. Valentik safely escorts Polipov back behind the front lines, ensuring his safety.

Liza, who is the widow of Anton Savelyev, still maintains her job at the library and persists in seeking the truth from Polina regarding her deceased husband, Polipov. The woman firmly believes that Polipov acted as a provocateur, intentionally disclosing the locations where Anton could seek refuge in the initial years following the revolution. Polina reaches a point of immense frustration as she becomes weary of constantly enduring Lisa's reproaches and relentless demands for a letter of confession. Vasily Kruzhilin, an editor of the district newspaper, finds himself increasingly drawn towards seeking guidance from the district secretary, Pyotr Petrovich Polipov, in his quest to comprehend the myriad challenges that accompany life after war. As he navigates through the complexities of this new era, Vasily begins to place greater trust and reliance on Pyotr's insights and perspectives, surpassing the influence and counsel he once sought from his own father and close friend, Ivan Savelyev.
Vasily's article published in the newspaper not only deals a devastating blow to his own father but undermines the lifelong efforts and accomplishments of the collective farm "Red Partisan". This news deeply affects the entire community and shakes the very foundations of their existence. Meanwhile, Maxim, Vasily's son, having completed his prison sentence for treason against the Motherland, decides to return to his hometown of Pankrat Nazarov. Bowing down on his knees, he humbly implores his father for forgiveness, desperately seeking absolution for his perceived weakness in succumbing to the brutal beatings and relentless abuse inflicted upon him while in captivity. However, to his dismay, his heartfelt plea falls on deaf ears as his father refuses to grant him the forgiveness he so desperately yearns for. Left disheartened and burdened by the weight of his past torment, he realizes that he can no longer endure a life devoid of forgiveness and understanding. Having failed to receive his father's forgiveness, he kills himself, and his father, who could not forgive the betrayal but loved his son, dies on his grave. Peter Zubov arrives and tells about Semyon, with whom he was divorced after the concentration camp.
Episode 7: Immortality
The year is 1961. Olga Koroleva and her daughter make their way to Mikhailovka, where they are greeted by Ivan Silantievich. Upon their arrival, Ivan suggests that Olga should pay a visit to Anna Mikhailovna, the mother of Semyon, as she is still holding onto the hope that her son is alive despite his reported death. He strongly recommend that she opens up to him about Irisha, Semyon's beloved daughter, by Olga lacks the courage to do so at this moment. Instead, he chooses to recount the memories of the days when the last encountered Semyon, painting a vivid picture of their encounters. Additionally, she dives into the harrowing details of their existence as partisans, skillfully led by the courageous Yakov Aleynikov. Furthermore, the bravely unveils the heart-wrenching tale of Yakov's untimely demise, showcasing is immense sacrifice and unwavering heroism in the face of adversity. In a short span of time, a letter originating from the distant land of Norway makes its way to the humble abode of the Savelyevs. Its contents reveal a startling discovery – a Russian tank sergeant, bearing a striking resemblance to their beloved Semyon as portrayed in a photograph, has been apprehended. This valiant individual had valiantly fought alongside the Norwegian Resistance, ultimately meeting his demise during one of the fierce battles. As a testament to the immense respect and gratitude bestowed upon him, he now rests eternally in Norwegian soil.
Polipov becomes aware of the trial taking place in Kiev, which involves the prosecution of Ukrainian nationalists and the conviction of Valentik. As the trial progresses, Polipov's own involvement in the matter becomes known, leading to the regional committee of the party launching an official investigation into his case. During the investigation, it is uncovered that Polipov had collaborated with the Tsarist guards, a revelation that ultimately leads to his expulsion from the party. Meanwhile, Polycarp Kruzhilin's son assumes the position of chairman at the collective farm "Krasniy Partisan" following these events. Additionally, Fyodor Savelyev's son Dmitry receives a letter from Ganka, who extends an invitation for him to join her.
