Background

Gosal was born in Glasgow, Scotland. She helped run her family business before working in Local Government prior to be being elected to the Scottish Parliament.[5][6]

Political career

Gosal stood in East Dunbartonshire at the 2019 United Kingdom general election and came in third place.[7]

On 8 May 2021 she was elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for West Scotland. She is the first Sikh and first female of Indian background to be elected as an MSP to the Scottish Parliament.[8][2]

On 13 May 2021, Gosal was sworn in as the first female of colour to take the oath for the Scottish Parliament (although technically fellow newcomer Kaukab Stewart was elected a day earlier).[9] She took her oath in Punjabi.[10]
