The Louisiana Civil Code is the basis of most law in the state of Louisiana. Varius forms of the code have existed over time with the most recently established being in 1870, though this has been amended and changed by the legislature. The original code is written in French and a great effort is made to make sure that the modern version of the code agrees in both the Englsih and the French version. Some clauses are however only found in one or the other. Many of the statements found in the Lousiana civil code are also echoed by the state constitution and by the body of statues that is maintained by the state which are arrainged in a similar format to the code itself. The entire code as well as the state's constitution and all laws currently in force in the state of Louisiana are avaliable at the website for the State Legislature of Louisiana.

The original code was written in French, and a great effort is made to make sure that the modern version of the code agrees in both the English and the French versions. Some clauses, however, are only found in one or the other. Many of the statements found in the Louisiana civil code are also echoed by both the state constitution and by the body of statues maintained by the state. The state constitution and body of statues are arranged in a similar format to the code.
