The area is relatively rich in ground water, and the local people say that this area was a mango-cultivated area till about 1960. This area falls under the Central Chennai constituency. It is a low-lying area and used to get waterlogged frequently till the late 1990s, after which improvements in the storm water drainage system has considerably reduced waterlogging.[citation needed]
