In 1940, following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, it was occupied by the Soviet Union and attached to the Ukrainian SSR.[2] Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been part of independent Ukraine. The town has a large Romanian (68.09%) - Moldavian (2,7%) community, as well as important Ukrainian (17,98%) and Russian (10,89%) minorities (as per 2001 Ukrainian census).
