SM Megamall is a shopping mall located in the Ortigas business district of Metro Manila, Philippines. It is one of the largest SM Supermalls developed and operated by SM Prime Holdings, the largest mall operator in the Philippines owned by Henry Sy Sr.[1] The mall has two buildings connected with a bridge and occupies a land area of approximately 21 hectares and has a total floor area estimated at 392,000 m2 (4,220,000 sq ft), making it the second largest shopping mall in the country. The mall has a maximum capacity of 4 million people.[2] It is as large as the Changi Airport Terminal 2 in Singapore.

History

The mall was built in 1989 and opened its doors on June 28, 1991, the third SM Supermall built by Henry Sy Sr, after SM City Sta. Mesa and the SM City North EDSA. SM Megamall is located in the Ortigas Center, at the portion encompassed by Mandaluyong City. It stands along the main EDSA thoroughfare and is almost adjacent to the Manila Metro Rail Transit(MRT) Ortigas station. SM Megamall was the largest mall in the country for a 17-year period, but when SM Mall of Asia was built, it was ranked third largest in the country by floor area, measuring 331,679 square meters of total retail floor area and seventh largest in the world after SM North (which is the first in the country and second in the world). It also boasted the first ice skating rink (which was removed in 2009 but returned five years later in 2014) and one of the first trade halls in the country.

The mall is located in close-proximity to several other shopping centers and malls. It is across the street from another shopping destination, St. Francis Square, which has branches of some shops restaurants also found in SM Megamall. Some of the more notable shopping malls nearby are Robinsons Galleria, Shangri-la Plaza Mall, Starmall, EDSA Central and The Podium; the latter is also owned by SM Megamall's parent company, SM Prime Holdings. SM Megamall became the Philippine Retail Association's 2009 Shopping Center of the Year.

In a study done on the world's largest shopping malls by Eastern Connecticut State University, the mall was ranked seventh among the world's largest shopping malls by "ground level area", and was the third largest mall in the Philippines, below the SM Mall of Asia and SM City North EDSA.[3]

Buildings

The mall has two main buildings. Building A features the SM Cinemas, Food Court, Toy Kingdom and other anchor tenants. There also was once a bowling alley. However, this has now been removed. The Atrium is often rented out for events and in-mall concerts. Building B features the SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, Cyberzone and other anchor tenants. The Bridgeway connecting the two main buildings of the mall contains several eateries. While the mall itself closes at a set time (9:00 pm on ordinary days). The Megastrip portion of the mall is located on the outskirts of the building premises and is usually open until midnight. Several shops and restaurants can be found in the Megastrip. This section of the mall was completed in 2009.

Mega Atrium

The approximate 16,000 m2 Mega Atrium is an addition to the existing two buildings. The Atrium fully bridges the gap between Buildings A and B. Completed in 2008, the Atrium features various choices of shops and restaurants.

Design and interior

The design of the mall is very modern. Upscale retail shops and restaurants are planned around a circular atrium with an area of 452 m2. Access to the center is designed to offer an air of drama and surprise. Off the existing bridgeway, the visitor approaches the center through a low-ceiling hallway that widens toward the cylindrical skylight. Dynamic non-concentric circles on the floor are achieved with the application of yellow tiles of varied hues. An equally dynamic skylight design matches the non-concentric circles in the floor. The curved patterns ripple out beyond the atrium area on both floors and ceilings to great consistency and harmony to the general look of the center. Interiors were designed by Arquitectonica.[4]

Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord

The Chapel of the Eucharistic Lord is a Roman Catholic chapel of the Archdiocese of Manila that was inaugurated on October 13, 2008. Located at the far end of fifth level of the SM Megamall Atrium, the 1,585 m2 chapel and its own assigned chaplain serve the pastoral needs of mall patrons and employees, which is a growing trend in modern Philippine shopping centers.

The retablo mayor (high altar) is executed in the neoclassical style, with a large crucifix in the central niche flanked by images of Our Lady of Fátima and Saint Joseph; it is in sharp contrast to the contemporary design of the rest of the space. The color scheme of the area is primarily white and earth-inspired with a neutral palette, and finishes are similar to stones used in Ancient Rome while wood in a natural oil finish is the most common material used. It has a separate perpetual adoration chapel in a modern design, with the Blessed Sacrament encased in a large, gilt wall-mounted monstrance as its focal point.

Aside from English-language Masses, services are also conducted in Tagalog and Chinese, in addition to a Charismatic Mass. Seasonal services in the Chapel include evening Mass on all Fridays of Lent and the traditional Christmastide novena of Masses called Simbang Gabi.

Building C

Building C is a more recent building of SM Megamall, and was opened on October 11, 2011. Located near EDSA to the west of Building A, it was formerly the Mega A Open Carpark. It also has business process outsourcing office spaces at the upper levels of the carpark, as well as an integrated bus terminal to suburban cities and towns in Rizal to the east of Metro Manila.

Mega Fashion Hall (Mega D)

The Mega Fashion Hall is the latest expansion of SM Megamall, adding 150,000 m2 to its current 392,000 m2 floor area which upon completion will make it the largest mall in the Philippines, dwarfing SM City North EDSA. Featuring a two-level basement parking and a five-level mall, it houses several international fashion brands, one of which is the flagship store of H&M in the Philippines, as well as Uniqlo. Aside from clothing stores, dining establishments will also open at the expansion. The Mega Fashion Hall will also house an IMAX theater, 56-seater Director's Club Cinemas, a new Olympic-sized ice skating rink (which will replace the old one which was removed in 2009), an upscale food court and a 14-lane bowling center.

Anchors

SM Supermarket

SM Supermarket is one of the first primary tenants inside the mall. SM Supermarket is located at the Building B near Surplus Shop and Dunkin' Donuts. A second branch of SM Supermarket is located at the upper ground floor of Building A as of May 26, 2011 (formerly Toy Kingdom and Powerbooks).

The SM Store (formerly Department Store)

The very foundation and one of the major anchors inside the mall. Fashion, footwear and other products can only be found at The SM Store. It is mainly located at Building B of the mall. The department store attracts more than 150,000 people daily.

SM Cinema Megamall

The Cinemas in SM Megamall is one the major tenants inside the mall. It consists of a 12-theater house, 3 of which are digital cinemas capable of showing 2D and 3D movies.

Event center

Formerly called the ice skating rink of the mall, the event center houses mini concerts and events.

SM Megamall Transport Terminal

Located on the Ground Floor of Building C, it serves as a bus stop going to Quezon City, and CAMANAVA Area.

SM Food Court

The SM Food Court is one of the very first anchor tenants located inside the mall, considered to be the largest food court in all of the SM Malls. The mall features more than 100 food stalls both local and international. The Food Court is located at the lower ground floor of Building A beside what used to be the ice skating rink.

SM Megatrade Hall

The SM Megatrade Hall is one of the first trade exhibits opened for convention shows and functions. It is located at the very top floor of Building B. The Trade Hall has 3 sections making it possible to make each section to have several events and functions.

Toy Kingdom

The Toy Kingdom in SM Megamall is the largest branch and flagship store, owned by the International Toyworld Inc. It is one of the first tenants inside the mall. It was renovated and expanded to make it a bigger and better toy store which now features surprising sections like the new I-Zone (Interactive Zone) and TK Ltd. Toy Kingdom is now located at the Lower Ground Floor of Building A

Cyberzone

A Technology-related shop open for buying cybernetic gizmos, gadgets and other techno products. It is located at the 4th floor of Building B.

Other anchors

SM Appliance Center

Located and connected near the SM Department Store in Building B. The SM Appliance Center is a kind of shop where you can buy certain appliance-related products like refrigerators, washing machines, fine electronics and others.

Cinderella

One of the junior anchor tenants inside the mall. Cinderella is shop that focuses on fashion, footwear and several accessories which appears to have similarities to SM Department Store. Cinderella is located at the Upper Ground Floor of Building A.But this store was closed and was replaced by Forever 21.

Ace Hardware

Ace Hardware is one of the junior anchor tenants inside the mall. Ace Hardware is a shop where you can find several hardware-related products like light electronics, batteries and others that are related to home products. It is located at the very end of the lower ground floor of Building B.

Our Home

Our Home is one of the very first anchor tenants located inside the mall. Our Home is located at the very end of the lower ground floor in Building A. Our Home is a large shop that focuses on furniture and fixtures like tables, ladders, chairs and other products like pillows, curtains and other furniture and fixtures-related products.

National Bookstore

National Bookstore is one of the anchor tenants inside the mall. The National Bookstore is a shop where Books and School Supplies can be found. It is located at the upper ground floor of Building A.

Surplus

Surplus Shop has 2 stores. The first is located at the lower ground floor of Building A near Toy Kingdom and the Food Court and the second at the upper ground floor of Building B near the SM Supermarket.

Watsons

Watsons consists of a pharmacy and convenience store. It has 2 branches which are located at the Upper Ground Floor of Building A near Toy Kingdom and the second floor near the bridge and the Mega Atrium (next to Gap).

Kultura Filipino

Kultura Filipino is a shop that is similar to the SM Department Store but consisst of Filipino-related products and clothes. Kultura Filipino is located in Building A.

Forever 21

Forever 21 is one of the latest tenants inside the mall. Forever 21 is an American-owned fashion store chain franchised by SM for the Philippine market. It caters to middle/upper-middle fashion minded persons. Forever 21 is located in Mega A near the Bridgeway and The Mega Atrium.

Proposals

IMAX theater plan

SM signed a contract with IMAX Corporation to build two IMAX theaters in SM City North EDSA and SM City Cebu, following the success of the first IMAX in Mall of Asia. Another deal for opening an IMAX is in SM Aura Premier. But there has been major planning and studies of putting an IMAX theater in SM Megamall. Currently, there are seven IMAX Theaters in the country and only in SM Supermalls, The 1st in SM Mall of Asia, 2nd in SM City North EDSA, 3rd in SM City Cebu, 4th in SM Southmall, 5th in SM City Clark, 6th in SM Lanang Premier and 7th SM Aura and 8th in SM Megamall - (The IMAX Theatre is now operational in line with the opening of SM Mega Fashion Hall last January 28,2014) , 9th in SM City Fairview, and finally 10th in SM Seaside City Cebu

Expansion

After the soft opening of the newly constructed Building C Carpark, The mall surpassed SM Mall of Asia by 2,000 m2 (22,000 sq ft) and became the second largest shopping mall in the Philippines.

With the Opening of the Mega Fashion Hall ( Building D ) , The current Gross Leasable Area is now 500,000 m² thus cementing its status as " The Largest Shopping Mall in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia "

Incidents and accidents

  • January 26, 2013: A holdup and shootout occurred when the Martilyo Gang robbed a jewelry store in the Department Store in the first floor.[5]
