Redmond is a city located in Deschutes County, Oregon. It is named for Frank T. Redmond, who settled near the present site of the town in 1905. , Redmond's 2006 Population is 21,109.

History

A post office was established for Redmond August 29, 1915; the city was incorporated December 13, 1916.

A major employer is the Redmond Air Center, located at the Redmond Airport. This is a Forest Service smoke-jumping, firefighting and training installation. In the first decade of the 21st century, Redmond has also become the home for many people who work in Bend, but cannot afford to live there.

Redmond is located at 44°16'8" North, 121°11'1" West (44.268978, -121.183487)Template:GR. It is 16 miles north of Bend on U.S. Highway 97.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²). 26.5 km² (10.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 13,481 people, 5,260 households, and 3,618 families residing in the city. The population density was 508.3/km² (1,316.7/mi²). There were 5,584 housing units at an average density of 210.5/km² (545.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.72% White, 0.09% African American, 1.16% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 2.14% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. 5.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,260 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,701, and the median income for a family was $41,481. Males had a median income of $31,940 versus $23,508 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,286. 9.7% of the population and 6.6% of families were below the poverty line. 8.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
