It consists of the twin towns of Pimpri and Chinchwad which are governed by a common municipal body (the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation or PCMC). The main language spoken in the town is Marathi. There is also a significant Sindhi population present in Pimpri. The Government of India, rehabilitated Sindhis, who came from Pakistan after the division of British India.

Geography
The township is situated at a height of 530 m above the sea level. It is blessed with pleasant climate all the year round. Three rivers Pavana, Mula and Indrayani flows through this area. Pimpri-chinchwad sources it water from Pavana river but release of domestic and industrial effluents[2], dumping of debris and domestic pollution has severely affected the quality of the Pavana water.
History
Main localities in Pimpri Chinchwad are Chinchwad, Pimpri, Nigdi, Akurdi and Bhosari. The name Chinch-wad is derived from trees Chinch (tamarind) and Wad (banyan). Chinchwad is famous for Saint Morya Gosavi’s Shrine which is one of the lord Ganesha’s shaktipeeth in Maharashtra state. Due to the flooding of river Pavana every year the temple gets submerged in the river water. Local people consider it as bathing of lord ganesha. Chinchwad is also the birthplace of great freedom fighters Chaphekar brothers. Pimpri Chinchwad is home to the historic town of Bhosari originally known as Bhojapuri[3]. Two thousand years ago it was the capital of legendary Hindu king Bhoj. During the period of Mahabharata this town was known as Bhojakata, the capital of the Bhoja-Yadava king Rukmi. It is mentioned in Mahabharata that Bhojakata lied to the west of Kundinapuri, the capital of Vidarbha Kingdom.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with lot of rigor and joy, Dasara is also one of the important festival and most of industries are closed during that time.
Industries
Pimpri-Chinchwad is a major industrial hub and hosts one of the biggest industrial zones in Asia. [4] Industrialization dates back to 1954 with starting of Hindustan Antibiotics Limited[5] considering this opportunity MIDC took initiative and bought huge scale land in this area[6]. The town is home to the Indian operations of major automobile companies like Premier Limited, Mahindra Navistar, Bajaj Auto, BEL Optronic Devices Limited, TATA Motors (formerly TELCO), Kinetic Engineering, Force Motors (formerly Bajaj Tempo) DaimlerChrysler,and Thermax.[5] In addition to this, several heavy industries such as Forbes-Marshall, ThyssenKrupp and Alfa Laval & Sandvik Asia have their manufacturing units in the town and also the German company KSB Pumps, swedish bearing company SKF. Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park hosts several Software and Information Technology majors like IBM India, KPIT Cummins, Tata Technologies, Infosys,Wipro, Geometric Limited etc.
