Run for Congress
On August 11, 2009, Altschuler filed to run for U.S. Congress from New York's 1st congressional district against four-term incumbent Democrat Timothy Bishop. The seat is currently ranked as competitive in the non-partisan CQ Political Report.[7]Altschuler is in a competitive Republican primary, slated for September 14, 2010. However, he is the cash on hand leader in the Republican field, having over $1.8 million as of July 1.[8]
On April 23, 2010, Altschuler received the endorsement of the Suffolk County Conservative Party.[9] Although there will be an open primary for this designation on September 14, 2010,[10] Altschuler is favored by Suffolk County Conservative Party Chairman Ed Walsh.
In addition, Altschuler has been endorsed by House Republican Whip Eric Cantor,[11] former House Speaker Newt Gingrich,[12] Dan Senor,[13] John Faso,[14] The Conservative Party of New York State, the American Conservative Union,[15] and John LeBoutillier.[16]
From 2000 to 2002, Altschuler was a registered member of the Green Party.[17] When asked about this, Altschuler said that while he once thought the party could help bring about clean water and air, "upon further review I understood that only conservative free markets policies offered real solutions to the challenges that face our environment and a free society."[18]
