Rubigen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
History
Rubigen is first mentioned in 1267 as Rubingen.[3]
Geography
Rubigen has an area of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, 55.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 19.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 18.6% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (5.7%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]
The municipality is located in the Aaretal (Aare Valley) and includes the village of Rubigen, the hamlets of Beitenwil, Kleinhöchstetten and Hunzigen as well as a number of individual farm houses. Until 1992 it also included the sections of Allmendingen and Trimstein, however they became independent municipalities in 1993.
Demographics
Rubigen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 2,892.[5] As of 2007[update], 6.0% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 20.9%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (91.8%), with French being second most common ( 1.6%) and Italian being third ( 1.3%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (22.6%), the FDP (14.2%) and the Green Party (12.2%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 20.9% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 67.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 11.5%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Rubigen about 81.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Rubigen has an unemployment rate of 1.42%. As of 2005[update], there were 69 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 24 businesses involved in this sector. 336 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 31 businesses in this sector. 469 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 69 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
