Raheem Sterling (born 8th December 1994)[1] is an English footballer who plays for Liverpool. He plays as a midfielder. Despite being Jamaican-born Sterling plays for the English youth teams due to his heritage.

Playing career

He played in a 'Victory Shield' youth match for England against Northern Ireland where he assisted the second goal in a 2-0 win.[2] Before the match he said "It is a big ambition of his to represent England. I'm just really pleased he can do that while playing for QPR."[3] He has been dubbed the "new Theo Walcott".[2]

QPR development manager Steve Gallen stated that “(Sterling) has loads of natural ability. This boy can pass, shoot, head it, score goals, tackle, defend, anything.”[4]

Liverpool

On 27 February 2010, Raheem joined Liverpool Football Club for around £500,000[5] from QPR. The attacking midfielder will join the club's Academy set-up in Kirkby.[1] Several top clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Rangers were also trying to sign Sterling, however a personal call from Kenny Dalglish convinced him to join Liverpool.[6]

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow said: "The success of our academy is vital to the future stalling of homegrown youth and we have made clear that we will continue to invest in outstanding youngsters from overseas.[1]

"Raheem is a very exciting young English player whose progress was being closely monitored by many other leading clubs and I'm delighted he's joining us.[1]

"Frank McParland (academy director) and his staff have done a great job in bringing him to Liverpool."[1]

The former QPR teenager enjoyed a dream start for the club when he got on the scoresheet in the U18 Merseyside derby. Liverpool won the entertaining match 4-3.[7]
