Matthew Gerard Clarke, Lord Clarke was appointed a judge of the Inner House of the Court of Session in August 2008. He was a Senator of the College of Justice from February 2000 until 2008, and from 1995 until 2000 he was a Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey.

He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow with the degrees MA and LLB. He lectured at the Department of Scots Law, Edinburgh University, from 1972 until his admission as an Advocate in 1978.

From 1983 until 1989 Lord Clarke was Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Home and Health Department and served on various tribunals, including, from 1987, Employment Tribunals, and from 1995, the Trademarks Tribunal. In 2008, he was appointed a member of the Privy Council.
