The Primal Scream (1970) is a book by Dr. Arthur Janov, the inventor of Primal Therapy. He claimed to have discovered the cure for neurosis, the book was subtitled: 'Primal Therapy: The Cure for Neurosis.' On the acknowledgments page, Janov thanked his then wife Vivan Janov, the 'person who truly made this book possible.' [1] Some editions featured Edvard Munch's painting The Scream on the cover. See, for example, the 1977 edition published by ABACUS. [2]

The Primal Scream contains an introduction, twenty one chapters, two appendixes, a bibliography and an index. [3]

The introduction describes how Janov heard a scream from one of his patients, a twenty-two year old college student who he identified with the pseudonym Danny Wilson. [4] Janov likened the scream to what one might hear from a person about to be murdered. [5] Janov suggested that the scream could 'change the nature of psychotherapy as it is now known.' [6] According to Janov, despite the fact that neither his patient nor he himself could see the sense in such a childish act, he asked Wilson to call out "Mommy! Daddy!". [7] After some reluctancce and hesitation, Wilson followed Janov's instruction. [8] As a result, Wilson became upset, had convulsions, and finally uttered a loud scream. Following the scream, Wilson declared that he could feel. [9] Several months later, Janov tried the same thing on another patient, who also screamed. [10] According to Janov, the patient then gained insights and seemed to understand himself. [11] Janov developed Primal Therapy as an outgrowth of his explanations of the changes he observed in his patients. [12]

The Primal Scream identified many behaviors as symptoms of neurosis, including homosexuality. Homosexuality is one of the main subjects dealt with in chapter seventeen, 'Sexuality, Homosexuality, and Bisexuality.' Janov compared homosexuality to drug addiction, and denied that homosexual acts are sexual, insisting that they are a denial of real sexuality. [13]
