Revision as of 09:25, 31 March 2008

DFB Cup winner 1973 was Borussia Mönchengladbach. As in the year before, the knock-out rounds were played over two legs, but the final was decided in a single game.

The final was supposed to be Günter Netzer's farewell game prior to his transfer to Real Madrid. However, Borussia's manager Hennes Weisweiler left him out of the starting lineup as he was already preparing for the time after Netzer's departure, so he brought on Herbert Wimmer as central midfielder and team captain. During the entire first half the spectators at Borussia's home, the Bökelberg demanded to see Netzer subbed in. Weisweiler wanted to bring Netzer on at half-time, but he refused. Only in extra time of the dramatic final against rivals [1. FC Köln]] Netzer practically subbed himself in: He got out of his training jacket, went to Weisweiler and told him: "Ich spiel dann jetzt." (English: I'll play now then.). He had talked to Christian Kulik before, who was completely drained. Just after his substitution, with his second touch, Netzer scored the winning goal. Later he admitted that he had hit the ball wrong and the goal had been an accident. It was later voted goal of the year.[citation needed]
