Deaths needing proper citation

Via thorough browsing of the 2024 deaths category, I’ve found the following are marked as deceased and needing of proper citation. Rusted AutoParts 13:19, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IMDB

Didn't wanna unilaterally revert if there'd be a consensus forged somewhere I didn't see, but is @Dimadick:'s inclusion of IMDB as an external link copacetic? Just seen it added to so many of the previous Deaths pages. Rusted AutoParts 02:24, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is a convenient way to locate names in chronological order of death. I have been using it for years. Dimadick (talk) 02:26, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I get that, I have some saved pages with similar lists to check for any potential missed names needing listing/sourcing. It’s just you’re making a lot of additions to over three years worth of pages, and I’m not sure if that’s a choice others necessarily support. Rusted AutoParts 03:35, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IMDB may be used as an external link, but not as a reliable source. See WP:IMDB. I was also inclined to revert, then noticed that it is OK as an EL. WWGB (talk) 04:32, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of suicidal methods?

For notable individuals who died by suicide, should we remove the methods used from the list? 73.208.44.57 (talk) 14:47, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why? You do not say. Ref (chew)(do) 15:02, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not saying I decide whether or not the method, if known, is listed. I am worried about a potential edit war with Bryan Krippner over this. See this revision. --73.208.44.57 (talk) 21:35, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We are not generally worried about an edit war with anyone here. If the method of suicide is reliably sourced, it will always get included in an entry here. Other years are for others to work out amicably and civilly. Ref (chew)(do) 21:45, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why "Professional wrestling" is different

Some hours ago Refsworldlee deleted the designation of a professional wrestling performer as such and asked in the edit summary why the "professional" should be included. There has never been an issue in denoting the practitioners of rugby union or rugby league or Australian rules football and I don't think there should be one for freestyle wrestling or Greco-Roman wrestling even though the latter are both honestly competed sports as opposed to the theatrical presentations known as "Professional wrestling"...even the rules for competitors at the Sumo World Championships are different from those observed by sekitori. To treat the "kayfabe" show performers as a subset of legitimate athletes is misleading and should be avoided. 71.105.190.227 (talk) 07:25, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So there's the question presented formally - it just needs for interested editors to add their thoughts. If "professional wrestling" is indeed considered a dedicated named version of wrestling, it may need to be included. Ref (chew)(do) 07:34, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Professional wrestling is not a sport competition, it is scripted entertainment. I support its inclusion to differentiate it from true competitive wrestling. WWGB (talk) 07:39, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a fair assessment. Not a fan of it either. Case proven. Ref (chew)(do) 14:19, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, it is a documented term and has a wiki about it (albeit one full of OR). But for balance and clarity, I usually add what type if competitive, similar to weight classes for boxers. Wyliepedia @ 11:30, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's been called professional wrestling for decades, maybe a century, so not sure why anyone would think they get to choose not to use the established term. 81.103.202.116 (talk) 08:10, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Pritchard

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-06/rat-of-tobruk-tom-pritchard-dies-aged-102/104187282 46.56.198.251 (talk) 07:56, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I presume from your abrupt post that you want Tom Pritchard added to Deaths in 2024. As he does not have a WP article, I will not be adding him. Another editor might. WWGB (talk) 08:10, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Normally we would go ahead and see what happens until one month is up as a redlink. But the source reveals very little of any notability save being a member of the so-called Tobruk Rats and living until 102. The first carries a slim notability given how many there were (14,000, and no others have ever been included here to my knowledge), the second (being able to dodge the Grim Reaper for as long as you can) is not a notability. This is not meant to sound disrespectful or mean, it's just me giving you a reason why I too won't be adding him. Thanks, may he rest in peace. Ref (chew)(do) 13:49, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

J. Richard Munro led Time Inc. into the merger with Warner Communications but was long gone from the company by the time the "Time-less" remnants were rebranded WarnerMedia...so the redirect "Time Warner" might be a better link for where he worked (in the spirit of those who played for sports teams before they moved to the cities that are in their current article names). 71.105.190.91 (talk) 12:34, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As Munro isn't even mentioned in the article you would like to redirect to, I think it inappropriate to change the description as it exists. If you're redirecting to an article/section, the subject should at least get a credit by name there. In any case, our entries are seldom exactly spot on with regards to specific linking, but still manage to guide the reader towards the relevant information, nonetheless. On 2024/08/19, insert "notable victims of the Bayesian yacht sinking"

On 2024/08/19, the Bayesian yacht sank. Rather than just "Mike Lynch", we should write "notable victims of the Bayesian yacht sinking". 188.218.210.140 (talk) 15:04, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Were there any other notable victims in the sinking that could be named? If not, then the change is not merited. Rusted AutoParts 17:38, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mike Lynch is currently the only notable (key word) victim here, (this source proves it) and therefore is the only entry on this page. Wyliepedia @ 17:39, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't Morvillo also notable? And also Jonathan Bloomer I think is notable, as he was the chairman of Morgan Stanley International 188.218.210.140 (talk) 11:59, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bloomer may not have a page, but he is notable DarkStarHarry (talk) 14:10, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Someone made a redirect article for Bloomer, so he has been added, at least until September 7. Also, WWGB has distinguished the event for the two deaths listed so far. Wyliepedia @ 08:13, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem strange that Bloomer won't redirect to the Morgan Stanley page, mainly because he doesn't get a mention there. Ref (chew)(do) 14:34, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that. One reason I didn't consider him notable. Wyliepedia @ 08:49, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected edit request on 24 August 2024

Could you please change the age and source of Italian singer Umberto Marcato, who passed away on August 23? I know you have one source that states he was 88, but I have found a couple of others that says he was 94 years old. [2] [3] 95.203.37.22 (talk) 16:34, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Renewal6 (talk) 17:25, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Most sources say though that he was 88. DrKilleMoff (talk) 19:32, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is not the practice here to display age ranges such as "88 or 94", as it suggests some kind of guesswork on the part of either Wikipedia editors (English or otherwise) or mistakes by source publication editors. Age ranges here are usually one year apart separated by ndash (i.e. "87–88" or "93–94"). As far as I can tell from past experience, if the two-year age range cannot be displayed, the age is not shown at all until matters become clearer. Ref (chew)(do) 00:34, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the deep past we might have written 88/94 in such cases, but I favour omission until age is known. WWGB (talk) 04:50, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please move Swedish hockey goaltender Boo Ahl to his correct date of death on August 8, according to this funeral notice? : [4] He is currently listed under August 9. 217.213.147.205 (talk) 08:08, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although the Ratsit records shows he died on the 9th, I think this family obituary notice is more likely to be more accurate, given that it was posted by family.  Done. Thanks. Ref (chew)(do) 08:21, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You’re welcome. I’m thinking that maybe there was some kind of time delay with Ratsit, because he died in another country? 217.213.147.205 (talk) 09:15, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ratsit takes their information from the Swedish tax agency. And Norway and Sweden have practically the same time zone. DrKilleMoff (talk) 17:57, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit of a paradox really - Ratsit are semi-official obiters, but Familjesidan source their info from published obituaries (usually via the families of the deceased) and create images of them. Something is not correct somewhere. I suspect he died on the 8th but they could not register his death officially until the 9th - that's the usual hiccup. Could you please add the age of Italian singer Umberto Marcato? According to this source he was born on January 5, 1930. I hope the source is acceptable by Wikipedia standards.

Could you please also move him to his correct date of death on August 22? He is currently listed under August 23.

I was about to make a comment on this, since in the article of his death they use as a source it puts his death age at 88. Is this source just wrong? Everything else seems to place his birth in 1930, which would put his death age at 94. Burnoutchicken (talk) 19:09, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two problems exist with this request regarding the subject's age. First, the requester did not bother to read this whole talk page, otherwise they would have realised that there is already an unresolved section open regarding this. Secondly, please never quote Discogs, as it is a Wiki and not a reliable independent source. The third part of this request can be carried out using the second source mentioned, and has been  Done.
