Question from Ginalyncharles (13:54, 23 July 2024)
Hello! I am trying to make, what I think, are minor edits to our school page. The correct motto, correct District name, correct CTE areas.
Also need to know if we have to keep information which is no longer relevant?
Thank you,
Gina --Ginalyncharles (talk) 13:54, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Gina!
- You say "we" and "our": are you employed by the school in any way? If so, there are some mandatory disclosure requirements that I'd be happy to walk you through.
- It looks like a couple of the minor edits were undone because the links you provided appear to be broken: are you able to provide a working URL?
- In terms of information that you say is no longer relevant: ideally content should be updated, not removed. Since dates are provided throughout, there's no reason to remove anything as far as I can see, though some portions might need to be updated if they are inaccurate. For example,
In 2000, the school opened its current library
: I don't know if this is still true, but the solution if not would be to change it to "a new library" from "its current library" and talk more about the replacement if one exists, not delete it altogether (Just as an example. It might still be entirely correct, I have no idea). Similar would go forThe case has not yet gone to trial
– this should be updated, not removed. Tollens (talk) 06:35, 24 July 2024 (UTC)- Hello, I am an employee at the school. Please let me know how to proceed. Thank you. Ginalyncharles (talk) 16:31, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- In that case, please add
{{paid|user=Ginalyncharles|employer=InsertName}}
to your userpage – this is so that others can easily see your affiliation with the topic. It is also strongly encouraged that editors with conflicts of interest like yourself not edit affected pages directly, but instead submit edit requests to be reviewed by others. This can be done easily using the edit request wizard. Tollens (talk) 06:16, 27 July 2024 (UTC)- Hello, How do I edit my user page? I would like to be the one to submit the school page updates and new information. Will I be able to do this after I update my user page? Thank you Ginalyncharles (talk) 14:37, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- If you click your username or this link it will take you there (and should automatically open the editor). There should be a pencil icon next to the "Publish page..." button, if you select it and click "Source editing" you can place the code above onto the page (changing InsertName to the name of your employer), then click "Publish page...". I am not certain what you mean about being the one to submit the updates: you can of course submit requests after you've updated your user page, but it is still very strongly encouraged that you not edit the school's page directly even after you update your user page. Making a request is very similar to editing the page directly – you still need to tell others exactly what needs to be updated and exactly what it should be replaced with (and typically requests are accepted as-is unless there are issues), the only difference is that someone else will take a look at your change before it is implemented into the article. Question from Farsamjamshidi (19:41, 26 July 2024)
Hello, I want to create Wikipedia, but I don't know where to upload my certificate --Farsamjamshidi (talk) 19:41, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Farsamjamshidi! I see that your user page has been deleted, and that you've been given some information about why on your user talk page. While I cannot see the content of the deleted page, please be aware that Wikipedia is not for hosting resumes/CVs, promoting yourself or your company, etc. There are some fairly strict rules about when people qualify for a Wikipedia article to be written about them (outlined at WP:Notability), and even then it is strongly discouraged to write about yourself. If you do meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, somebody else will eventually write about you unprompted. Tollens (talk) 06:22, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Question from Rami wicki (20:41, 27 July 2024)
How do I encourage others to edit the page that I've put together? --Rami wicki (talk) 20:41, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Rami wicki! Most of the time, you really don't – aside from tagging the talk page as being related to the Wikiprojects it falls under (which has already been done) and placing appropriate categories on the page (which you've done also), there's not a whole lot to do. People will come across the page organically, but this could take some time. Keep in mind that the article will never be done: there's no hurry. If you think there are specific big issues with the page, but you can't fix them, you could add cleanup tags pointing out those issues (though there are loads of articles tagged like this and so adding it probably won't drastically increase the number of editors working on it). Question from Walakira Ronald165 on Talk:Stephanie McKay (03:55, 29 July 2024)
Can i get 1000 subscribers a day on my YouTube channel walakiraronald 165 in one week --Walakira Ronald165 (talk) 03:56, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Walakira Ronald165; I'm only here to help with questions about using or editing Wikipedia, and Wikipedia is also not a place for advertising or promotion. Perhaps you can get 1000 subscribers a day, but I can't give you advice about how and Wikipedia will not be an effective place to point people to your channel from. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Feature news
- Editors using the Visual Editor in languages that use non-Latin characters for numbers, such as Hindi, Manipuri and Eastern Arabic, may notice some changes in the formatting of reference numbers. This is a side effect of preparing a new sub-referencing feature, and will also allow fixing some general numbering issues in Visual Editor. If you notice any related problems on your wiki, please share details at the project talkpage.
Bugs status
- Some logged-in editors were briefly unable to edit or load pages last week. These errors were mainly due to the addition of new linter rules which led to caching problems. Fixes have been applied and investigations are continuing.
- Editors can use the IP Information tool to get information about IP addresses. This tool is available as a Beta Feature in your preferences. The tool was not available for a few days last week, but is now working again. Thank you to Shizhao for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 28 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- There are new features and improvements to Phabricator from the Release Engineering and Collaboration Services teams, and some volunteers, including: the search systems, the new task creation system, the login systems, the translation setup which has resulted in support for more languages (thanks to Pppery), and fixes for many edge-case errors. You can read details about these and other improvements in this summary.
- There is an update on the Charts project. The team has decided which visualization library to use, which chart types to start focusing on, and where to store chart definitions.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikivoyage in Czech (

Question from Victory Chinedum (21:30, 31 July 2024)
How do I publish a new article? --Victory Chinedum (talk) 21:30, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Victory Chinedum, and apologies for the very delayed reply – there is a good information page at Help:Your first article that will hopefully be of use, and there is a button on that page that will help you create the page where you can work on your article. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that content in the article needs to be supported by citations to reliable sources (you can't use your own personal knowledge directly), and that the article must contain citations to multiple reliable sources that are both independent of the subject (so for example, in an article about a company, their website would not be independent) and have significant coverage of the subject rather than only a passing mention. Feature news
- Two new parser functions will be available this week:
{{#dir}}
and{{#bcp47}}
. These will reduce the need forTemplate:Dir
andTemplate:BCP47
on Commons and allow us to drop 100 million rows from the "what links here" database. Editors at any wiki that use these templates, can help by replacing the templates with these new functions. The templates at Commons will be updated during the Hackathon at Wikimania. [2][3] - Communities can request the activation of the visual editor on entire namespaces where discussions sometimes happen (for instance Wikipedia: or Wikisource: namespaces) if they understand the known limitations. For discussions, users can already use DiscussionTools in these namespaces.
- The tracking category "Pages using Timeline" has been renamed to "Pages using the EasyTimeline extension" in TranslateWiki. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match.
Project updates
- Editors who help to organize WikiProjects and similar on-wiki collaborations, are invited to share ideas and examples of successful collaborations with the Campaigns and Programs teams. You can fill out a brief survey or share your thoughts on the talkpage. The teams are particularly looking for details about successful collaborations on non-English wikis.
- The new parser is being rolled out on Wikivoyage wikis over the next few months. The English Wikivoyage and Hebrew Wikivoyage were switched to Parsoid last week. For more information, see Parsoid/Parser Unification.

User talk:Ginalyncharles
Hello—I am Neonorange I hope you do not mind my butting in, but I have just reverted an edit by an IP which is much like the edits to Sussex Technical High School made by the User talk:Ginalyncharles account. All of GC edits to mainspace have been reverted, mainly for deleting multiple citations.
I notice that on your talk page that the account directly claimed to be a school employee. I think this highly unlikely that this vandalism only account is employed by the school. I have left a warning on the ip talk page and intend to leave a warning on the GC talk page.
Please check the contributions at the GC talk page. I leave it to you to take up the impersonation since is was not on my talk page.
Thank you for lending your talk page. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 05:59, 8 August 2024 (UTC) —
- Hey Neonorange, you aren't butting in! Thanks for the pointer, I am only working from my phone for the next week-ish so I will probably not be able to look at this very effectively until I'm able to sit down at a real computer again, but I'll certainly take a look then. From what I remember of the account's editing, I do think it's entirely plausible that it is controlled by an employee of the school, since it was mostly removing negative information about the school as well as a section that looked like it could very well have been outdated (not that removal of the section would have been correct even if so, just that I can imagine that a school employee might do so). I certainly agree the edits are problematic regardless. Tollens (talk) 15:32, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
Question from Dmbjrw67 (19:29, 8 August 2024)
How long after I make edits will they show up? --Dmbjrw67 (talk) 19:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Dmbjrw67, and welcome to Wikipedia! Edits are made public immediately after you click the publish changes button. It seems like you made an edit where you did not change any content on the page, but did provide quite a long edit summary, which may be the source of the confusion here. Edit summaries are not part of the article, they are only to help others figure out what you changed, and are visible only in the page history (in the case of your edit, that is here) and diffs, which show the changes that were made by each edit (in your case available here). You can see in that diff that you added only one blank line to the actual article: you may want to try again, placing your new text with the rest of the text of the article, then putting only a brief description of what you added in the edit summary box. Tollens (talk) 15:24, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Could you direct me on how to make an addition to the recipients section? That is what I'm trying to accomplish. Dmbjrw67 (talk) 16:07, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- If you go to the article page, you can click "Edit" near the top of the right-hand side of the page (or "Edit source" instead if that button is there), or alternatively you can use this direct link. That should bring up another page with the text of the article which you can type in: if you scroll to the place in the article you want to change, you can type directly into the article. If you look at other entries there are some extra parts of each entry that are responsible for the formatting which you should also include in your entry: your addition should look like
:: {{Hanging indent|text=Your entry goes here}}
before you click publish. When you are asked for an edit summary after clicking publish (where you put your content before), you can put something like "Added entry forperson's name
" so that others can easily tell what you changed. Tollens (talk) 16:57, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- AbuseFilter editors and maintainers can now make a CAPTCHA show if a filter matches an edit. This allows communities to quickly respond to spamming by automated bots. [4]
- Stewards can now specify if global blocks should prevent account creation. Before this change by the Trust and Safety Product Team, all global blocks would prevent account creation. This will allow stewards to reduce the unintended side-effects of global blocks on IP addresses.

Question from Tshirelecokarabo (04:06, 13 August 2024)
Hello mentor , how do I make a biography of someone? --Tshirelecokarabo (talk) 04:06, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) Hello, Tshirelecokarabo, I'm Mathglot. Brand new users will find writing a biography a difficult task to tackle at this early stage. I would concentrate on learning how to make smaller edits in existing articles first; see your homepage for some ideas. Once you gain some experience, and Wikipedia terms like Notability, Reliable sources, and WP:BLP are familiar to you, then have a look at Help:Your first article for more details about how to go about writing a new article about someone. Good luck! Mathglot (talk) 05:52, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Sandboxed changes to uw-v1 re contributions phrase
Hi, Tollens, and thanks for the ping at Talk header. Not sure if you are interested in the multilevel user-warning templates, but I made a proposal here about a proposed change to the text about user contributions, and sandboxed it in {{uw-vandalism1/sandbox}}, in case you feel like commenting. It's been pretty quiet so far, and that page has 1,007 watchers, so it may just be acquiescence by silence. Mathglot (talk) 07:19, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
- I do use those templates quite frequently, not sure why I didn't have that talk page on my watchlist so thanks for the pointer! I've left some feedback there. Tollens (talk) 07:55, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Feature news
- Editors who want to re-use references but with different details such as page numbers, will be able to do so by the end of 2024, using a new sub-referencing feature. You can read more about the project and how to test the prototype.
- Editors using tracking categories to identify which pages use specific extensions may notice that six of the categories have been renamed to make them more easily understood and consistent. These categories are automatically added to pages that use specialized MediaWiki extensions. The affected names are for: DynamicPageList, Kartographer, Phonos, RSS, Score, WikiHiero. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match. Thanks to Pppery for these improvements. [6]
- Technical volunteers who edit modules and want to get a list of the categories used on a page, can now do so using the
categories
property ofmw.title objects
. This enables wikis to configure workflows such as category-specific edit notices. Thanks to SD001 for these improvements. [7][8]
Bugs status
- Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with
Talk:WP:
so that their titles start withWikipedia talk:
), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/ instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in phab:P67388. - Editors who volunteer as mentors to newcomers on their wiki are once again able to access lists of potential mentees who they can connect with to offer help and guidance. This functionality was restored thanks to a bug fix. Thank you to Mbch331 for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 18 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- The application deadline for the Product & Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Members will help by providing advice to Foundation Product and Technology leadership on short and long term plans, on complex strategic problems, and help to get feedback from more contributors and technical communities. Selected members should expect to spend roughly 5 hours per month for the Council, during the one year pilot. Please consider applying, and spread the word to volunteers you think would make a positive contribution to the committee.

first --Chemrach (talk) 18:16, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Chemrach – I'm not sure what you mean. Do you have a question about using or editing Wikipedia? Tollens (talk) 18:54, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
Highly irresponsible
Your move back to mainspace of List of kidnappings: 2020–present. BLP issues are not for AfD, they should be removed (in general, and from the mainspace in particular). Moving it back to the mainspace while being fully aware of the issues is really a very poor decision. Fram (talk) 07:59, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Fram: Sorry, you are absolutely correct, and for some reason I only realized this halfway through typing a response to this which would have disagreed. My original train of thought was that you had misidentified the page as being entirely new content, and so had moved it to draftspace as "this doesn't look ready yet" even though the content there had existed for multiple years. I realize now, and should have before, that you likely meant the move to be similar to WP:BLPDEL. Regardless of your rationale I agree that I shouldn't have restored it, and have literally zero idea why I thought restoring what I agreed were BLP violations was remotely appropriate even if you had made a mistake in moving the page to draftspace. I will give the article a look right away (again, what the hell was I thinking before to not do so previously) to address the BLP issues. I see some of them have been fixed with the most recent edit. If you would like to move it back to draftspace in the meantime please do. Tollens (talk) 08:31, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! No, between the edit already done and the extra look you will now give it, I see no reason to redraftify it. Don't fret on it, we all make mistakes (I've got the block log to prove it), not repeating them too often is the best we can hope for :-) Fram (talk) 08:53, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Absolutely – certainly not one I'll make again anytime soon. :-)
- I've gone through and removed all the names where I can't find a source for a conviction or where I am certain there has been no conviction yet, and added one missing source; far as I can tell that covers everything that was not resolved in the previous edit. Tollens (talk) 09:25, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, much better now! Fram (talk) 10:42, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- Administrators can now test the temporary accounts feature on test2wiki. This was done to allow cross-wiki testing of temporary accounts, for when temporary accounts switch between projects. The feature was enabled on testwiki a few weeks ago. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. Temporary Accounts is a project to create a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors which are no longer made public. Please share your opinions and questions on the project talk page.
- Later this week, editors at wikis that use FlaggedRevs (also known as "Pending Changes") may notice that the indicators at the top of articles have changed. This change makes the system more consistent with the rest of the MediaWiki interface. [9]
Bugs status
- Editors who use the 2010 wikitext editor, and use the Character Insert buttons, will no longer experience problems with the buttons adding content into the edit-summary instead of the edit-window. You can read more about that, and 26 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- Please review and vote on Focus Areas, which are groups of wishes that share a problem. Focus Areas were created for the newly reopened Community Wishlist, which is now open year-round for submissions. The first batch of focus areas are specific to moderator workflows, around welcoming newcomers, minimizing repetitive tasks, and prioritizing tasks. Once volunteers have reviewed and voted on focus areas, the Foundation will then review and select focus areas for prioritization.
- Do you have a project and are willing to provide a three (3) month mentorship for an intern? Outreachy is a twice a year program for people to participate in a paid internship that will start in December 2024 and end in early March 2025, and they need mentors and projects to work on. Projects can be focused on coding or non-coding (design, documentation, translation, research). See the Outreachy page for more details, and a list of past projects since 2013.
