Joel Haver (born 1996-1997) is an American YouTuber, independent filmmaker, actor, and musician.[2] He is best known for his sketch comedy short films, frequent and unique use of rotoscoping, prolific no-budget feature-length film output, and collaboration with other creators and the community.[3][4][5][6] He has over two million followers and subscribers across multiple platforms, has created more than 16 feature films and nearly 600 short films, and has amassed more than 200 million views.[7] He hosts the yearly "Movies Shot During the Oscars" film festival, in which he encourages independent filmmakers to shoot feature-length films during the broadcast of the yearly Academy Awards ceremony.[8]
SNL "Charmin Bears" Sketch Controversy
On July 14th, 2022, Joel Haver published the "Toilet Paper Bears" comedy sketch on his YouTube channel. The video depicts a dispute between the Charmin Bears family, in which the son confronts his father in his dream to be a dancer, to his father's disappointment, describing his dream as a "one-ply kind of thought" and adding, "Wiping your butt is one of the best things you can do as a bear."[9][10]
In October 2022, Saturday Night Live aired the "Charmin Bears" sketch, bearing striking similarities to Haver's original sketch. Notably, the basic premise of the sketches was nearly identical (a young bear confronts his father about his dream to be a dancer); in both videos, the bears are colored blue, the father wears glasses and the child bears no accessories, and the father emphasizes the importance of the Charmin Bear lifestyle (defecating into toilet paper). [11][9]
Later that month, Haver published his video entitled "SNL stole my video" to widespread media attention.[12][13][14] Despite the reproachful title, he went on to attribute the similarities to parallel thinking and express that he was not personally bothered by the sketch, though he added, "If I still was a smaller creator, which I was for a long time, I could see it rubbing me the wrong way." [13]
Following the release of his video, Saturday Night Live removed the Charmin Bears sketch from their website.[11] The video is no longer found on any major streaming platforms.
