Far East Organization is the largest private real estate developer in Singapore.[1][2] Founded in 1960 by Ng Teng Fong,[3][4] the company has businesses in property development, retail, hospitality,[5] and food and beverage[6] brands in Asia and Australia.[7][8] It is currently managed by Philip Ng, whose brother Robert runs the Hong Kong-based sister company Sino Group.[5] The two refer to Far East Organization as a Christian enterprise.[1]
Far East Organization operates in Singapore,[2] Hong Kong,[2] China,[9] Malaysia,[9] and Australia.[9][2] It has three public-listed subsidiaries: Far East Orchard Limited,[10][2] Yeo Hiap Seng Limited,[2] and Far East Hospitality Trust.[11]
History
Far East Organization’s first residential project was 72 terrace houses in Jalan Pacheli in Serangoon Gardens. The project was completed in 1962.[2]
After developing a series of residential developments in the 1960s, the company diversified into retail, starting with Far East Shopping Centre on Orchard Road in 1974.[2][7] This was followed by the completion of other shopping and office developments in the prime Orchard Road area, including Lucky Plaza (1978), Orchard Plaza (1981), Far East Plaza (1983), and Claymore Plaza (1984).[7]
In 1987, the company acquired a majority stake in the publicly-listed Ming Court Hotel Limited[12] (renamed Orchard Parade Holdings Limited in 1991).[12][9] The acquisition included the Ming Court Hotel, which was renamed The Orchard Parade Hotel.[13] Orchard Parade Holdings was restructured in 2012 to become Far East Orchard.[9]
In 1995, the company acquired a majority stake in Yeo Hiap Seng, a Singaporean beverage company.[6] The company launched the luxury development brand Inessence in 2010[14] and lifestyle real estate development brand Far East SOHO in 2011.[15]
In 2012, Far East Organization listed the Far East Hospitality Trust on the Singapore Exchange.[16]
In 2013, it entered the Australian market through acquisitions and partnerships with The Straits Trading Company and Toga Group.[9][17] It also acquired several retail and commercial developments.[9]
In October 2019, the company opened The Fullerton Hotel Sydney which occupies Sydney’s former General Post Office, built in 1874.[18]
Two new businesses, Store-Y—a self-storage facility[19]— and Agape Laundry—a centralised commercial laundry service[20]—were established in 2017.[21][20]
In 2020, Far East Hospitality expanded for the first time into overseas territories with the acquisition of Village Hotel Ariake Tokyo in Japan.[22][23]
Notable projects
Residential Homes
Inessence
Far East Organization developed the Inessence concept to cater to the luxury market.[24] Key projects are:
- Alba: A freehold luxury residence located a short stroll from Orchard Road's prime shopping belt. Alba is an architectural masterpiece designed by Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica, known for projects like the W Hotel in Miami and the Microsoft Europe Headquarters in Paris. Its distinctive Y-shaped architecture and high-floor units offer expansive city views.[25][26]
- Boulevard Vue: Situated on Cuscaden Walk, off Orchard Boulevard, Boulevard Vue is a 33-storey freehold residential development with only 26 units and two penthouses. Designed by Takashi Sugimoto of Super Potato Japan, it epitomises luxury living in one of Singapore's prime districts.[27][28]
- Skyline@Orchard Boulevard: This iconic freehold development features 40 exclusive residences, including a triplex penthouse.[29][30] Located just a four-minute walk from ION Orchard, it offers residents close proximity to top luxury brands and experiences. The design is the work of Pritzker Prize Laureate Fumihiko Maki of Maki & Associates.[26]
Far East SOHO
The SOHO brand is defined by three dimensions: locale, connectivity, and space. Focusing on "trans-urban" locales,[31][32] these are suburban districts transforming into urban centres, enhanced by transportation connectivity and lifestyle amenities.[24][33]Key projects are:
- The Scotts Tower: Located at Scotts and Cairnhill Roads, it is the first project under the Far East SOHO brand. Designed by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio in Amsterdam,[34][35] this 31-storey tower comprises apartments and penthouses, along with landscaped gardens and recreational facilities.[36][35] It was awarded the World Gold Winner in the FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Award 2020.[37][38] The development was also among eight projects recognised for design excellence and safety.[39]
- The Siena: This condominium in Bukit Timah features high ceilings and unique layouts.[40][41]The 54-unit development has distinctive space planning concepts and was recognized with the SG Mark award at the Singapore Good Design Mark (SG Mark) Awards 2017[42][43]
Mixed-use Developments
One Holland Village is a mixed-use development by Far East Organization, Sekisui House and Sino Group, located in the heart of Holland Village, Singapore. Holland Village was designated a Urban Redevelopment Authority Identity Node in 2013, an honour bestowed upon local identity areas known for their distinctive qualities.[44][45][46] This project represents a significant investment by the Far East-led consortium in enhancing urban living, marked by their acquisition of the site for S$1.2 billion.[47][48][49][50]
This project near the Holland Village MRT Station integrates residential, offices, retail and serviced apartment components[51], offering a holistic urban living experience.[52][53] The development is designed to blend seamlessly with the vibrant cultural fabric[54] of Holland Village, known for its eclectic charm and lively atmosphere. The retail portion is designed as an open-air concept with greenery and public amenities.[55] The 13,500 sqm pet-friendly mall was soft-launched on Dec 8.[56][57]
The Reserve Residences in Bukit Timah, next to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is an integrated development with 732 residential units spread over eight blocks as well as 160 serviced apartments.[58][59] The residences sits atop the retail component called Bukit V.[59] The mixed-use development will be integrated with a transport hub[60], with direct access to Beauty World MRT Station via an underground link and a new air-conditioned bus interchange on the second level of the three-storey mall Bukit V.[61][62] The architect firm is WOHA.
It is the first mixed-use development to be built on an integrated transport hub in Bukit Timah.[59] Far East Organization and Sino Group jointly acquired the Jalan Anak Bukit site for S$1.03 billion, marking a major investment in developing this commercial and residential area.[63][64]
Golden Mile Complex was acquired by Far East Organization, Perennial Holdings and Sino Land Group in 2022. It was a landmark deal, marking it the first collective sale of a large-scale strata-titled conserved building in Singapore.[65][66] [67]. The partners aim to transform the property into a mixed-use integrated office, retail and residential development.[68][69] Aurea is the name of the upcoming residential condominium tower.[70]
Shopping malls
Orchard Central
Orchard Central in Orchard Road is a shopping mall by Far East Organization, situated at the former Glutton's Square site This development stands out for its strategic location across from the Centrepoint Shopping Centre. It was officially opened on 2 July 2009.[71] In December 2016, Forbes recognized Orchard Central as one of the top five shopping malls in Singapore.[72] Uniqlo South East Asian flagship store and Don Don Donki (first Singapore store) are one of the major tenants.[73][74]
One of the remarkable features of Orchard Central is the Discovery Walk, which earned the prestigious FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Award 2016 World Gold Winner in the Retail category. This area is part of a larger collaboration comprising Orchard Central by Far East Organization, 313@somerset by LendLease, and orchardgateway by OCBC Bank and Great Eastern. [75][76]
Square 2
Opened on 10 December 2007, Square 2 mall in Novena boasts over 150 specialty stores across five floors, offering a diverse range of products and services in food and beverage, fashion and accessories, education and enrichment, as well as beauty & wellness.[77]
Square 2 is directly connected to the Novena MRT station via its basement and is linked to Tan Tock Seng Hospital through a bridge. The upper levels of the building (levels 8 to 11) house 145 medical suites at Novena Medical Centre.[78]
Clarke Quay Central
Clarke Quay Central is located on Eu Tong Sen Street, opposite Clarke Quay along the Singapore River in Singapore's Central Area. Far East Organization won the bid of $341m for the 1.3 ha plot above the Clarke Quay MRT station.[79] [80] This shopping mall opened in January 2007.[81] World X Fest 2023 Japan Edition was held in the mall from Sep 29 to Oct 1.[82]
The development comprises a five-storey shopping mall and a 25-storey office tower. The shopping mall spans five levels, offering 200,000 square feet (approximately 19,000 m²) of retailing space. Don Don Donki opened its sixth outlet [83] and in 2017, Japan's Lumine opened its first overseas retail store and cafe in the mall.[84]
Clarke Quay Central won the international FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Award 2010 in the Office category[85].
Medical Suites
Far East Organization forayed into the development of medical suites; key projects are Novena Medical Center completed in 2007 and Novena Specialist Center launched in 2010[86][87][88], located opposite Tan Tock Seng Hospital.[89][90]
