WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

• Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
• Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
• Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! @Rachel.zrq Good progress. To remove the message about problems in the "Immigration..." article, contact the editor who added it. Looking at the history, I assume it is Cookai1205. Please leave them a massage in Chinese asking them to revew the article again and remove the template, or tell you in more detail what needs to be fixed. Hello Professor. I found myself able to remove the prompt template from the article. So I deleted that template by myself, and now there is no reminder about it on the homepage. History of wood carving

• I wondered who would have written 62KiB of text without a single source, and filled it with things like sentences beginning with "Of furniture,", claims that things "have never been surpassed" or are "excellent" and that "Screens made up of labyrinths of complicated joinery, consisting of multitudes of tiny balusters connecting hexagons, squares or other forms, with the flat surfaces constantly enriched with small carvings, are familiar to every one."

  They are? To everyone?

  Then I put the sentences into Google Books. This is the 1911 Britannica's "Wood-Carving" article, verbatim. It's not very good, by our standards, really, is it? "the Oriental is at times more restrained in his methods", it says. "No country in Europe possesses roofs to equal those of England created in the 15th century.", as well. This is chauvinistic, subjective, dated, Anglo-centric bullshit.

  And I note that people have been complaining about it on the talk page for 13 years. Should we start again?

  • @Drmies @Uncle G Guys, I may quite well vote delete/redirect, but I don't think this should be done without a PROD or AfD. Throw it at AfD, get consensus stamp, move on. Some folks may call me a deletionist these days, but I dislike stealh deletion.       @Drmies No bad faith implied, but as someone who occasionally in the past 1has done this too - I don't think it is a good practice, and I try to avoid it.     • You know as well as we do that AFD is not "votes for rewrites" and that editing is not deletion. Votes for rewrites is found at Project:be bold. We just do them. Further consensus toward that end is found at Project:WikiProject Encyclopaedia Britannica#The good, the bad and the ugly. I am strongly tempted to just kerrrzappp! this one.

      After 18 years and approximate 100 editors attempting to clean it up, it still has things like England's woodcarvers making "splendid staircases" that Louis 14 furniture was "hardly legitimate" and "mistaken", that Persian and Egyptian carvings are only of note when they are in British museums, that a 3rd century carving is "almost" as good as one from Elizabethan England, and that most of Africa, central and south America really aren't worth talking about at all.

      This is biased, myopic, tripe from the British Imperial era; and shouldn't stand in Wikipedia.

Systemic missing articles

Hi Piotr, just taking note of your interest in missing broad topics. One obvious example is Culture of X articles. Quite an important set of articles topically (I would argue), but sometimes still entirely missing! Very common for African countries for example to lack. When articles do exist, they're often terrible. Perhaps I should do a systematic check to get some numbers on this, I've mentioned here and there before. Culture articles are hard to write, even compared to other broad topics, which is probably part of it. CMD (talk) 03:02, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

[Media Trends and Globalization] Question about the Wikipedia Main Project : Kim Soongki

Hello, Professor.

I have published my final translation article for my main project based on your feedback on [Media Trends and Globalization].

Unfortunately, for the article 'Social network analysis', I was given permission to translate it because, as the professor confirmed, there was no Korean translation available.

However, I found out through my user talk page that the same article exists, translated by someone in 2019. and after checking, I realized that the same article had been translated before, but the initial translator had linked to an inappropriate English page and article due to his own negligence.

I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed in such an awkward case.
