Any chance to Collab?

Hi, I am writing here after adequately approching through all the channels that is the respective wikiprojects and user talk pages of copy editors to collab in a cleanup drive of the articles listed here: User:456legend#Cleanup Drives - Current. I haven't received any positive response from other editors. So this would be my last time asking whether anyone interested in this cleanup drive are welcomed and any kind of help is appreciated. Thank you. 456legend(talk) 17:51, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@456legend You might get some responses, and you might not. Asking for collaboration is fine. If no one is interested, though, don't be discouraged. There is no deadline on Wikipedia. Other editors may have their own interests and their own ideas about what articles to deal with.
That list might look daunting to those who want to do things on Wikipedia part-time, and some editors might not be interested in assembly constituencies in India. (I don't know if you created these, or if you are just cleaning them up, but to me, this collection looks like a set of data that will be hard to maintain as the decades go on.) Are you trying to take on too much by cleaning all of this up? Just asking. Anyway, those are my opinions, and I could be wrong. I hope you get some collaborators. Good luck. David10244 (talk) 05:47, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @David10244, thank you for your response. I understand that the topic or category may not be of interest to other users and it may fall outside of the scope of their interests. I haven't created any new articles or pages for this series, and I only want to clean them up to meet Wikipedia's standards and maintain consistency among them. I chose this task because I recently found that many pages were vandalized by multiple IP users who blanked content from these articles, and this went unnoticed for most of the articles. Some of the vandalism was reverted by various users, but not all of it.
Regarding your question about whether I will handle all of this, the answer is "YES" if no one else joins me in this cleanup. I will do it alone, and as you mentioned, there is no deadline on Wikipedia, so I will take my time to ensure everything is done properly. I have also decided to take a Wiki-break for a week or two before resuming my work. It is a tedious task, but I enjoy editing articles and making them right. (But I will also later ensure to refer these articles for verification so that there is no comment of original research in the first place) Thank you very much for your good wishes. 456legend(talk) 10:14, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@456legend You're welcome, thanks for the reply. David10244 (talk) 07:44, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings, @456legend
I am a novice here and lack the expertise of a seasoned editor, but I possess proficiency with writing aptitudes and an avid interest in geopolitics for the scope of your noble work on Wikipedia.
Hence, perhaps I am competent in extending my contribution to you; in this regard. However, owing to my lack of familiarity with this platform, I humbly strive for guidance concerning the appropriate approach to working with articles.
Good day
Yours sincerely,
(~~~~) Wordsmithowl (talk) 08:52, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Wordsmithowl I think that "proficiency with writing aptitudes" is a bit mixed up, and not what you meant to say. David10244 (talk) 09:58, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the language I employed didn't make my context stand out for you, or you didn't understand the words appropriately. Let me elaborate on my context to ensure the clarity of the statement.
The essence of this particular context pertains to effective communication, the use of appropriate language and tone, the structure of written work in a rational and coherent manner, and the laying of grammatical rules and conventions accurately.
Good day-
(~~~~) Wordsmithowl (talk) 12:07, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Wordsmithowl That makes more sense, thanks. David10244 (talk) 03:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stub length

How short is too short for a Wikipedia Article?

-How many words is too little?

-How many paragraphs?

-If my article is a stub, will it be at risk of deletion? TrademarkedTarantula (talk) 04:04, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello TrademarkedTarantula, and welcome back to the Teahouse. Information about how Wikipedia classifies an article as a stub can be found at Wikipedia:Stub. There isn't a character or paragraph count that is used to make the determination. In general terms, a stub is an article that, although lacking the breadth of coverage expected from an encyclopedia, provides some useful information and is capable of expansion. Non-article pages, such as disambiguation pages, lists, categories, templates, talk pages, and redirects, are not regarded as stubs.
An article being a stub within of itself does not put it at risk of deletion. Deletion is mainly due to an article lacking sufficient notability for inclusion or meeting a criteria for speedy deletion. —Sirdog (talk) 04:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TrademarkedTarantula, according to WP:STUB, A stub is an article deemed too short and incomplete to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject. I have been editing for almost 14 years, and have never written a stub. But I have expanded many stubs. How could any editor possibly be proud of writing a crappy encyclopedia article that is too short and incomplete? We should focus on quality not quantity. Cullen328 (talk) 08:39, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Stubs were more common in the early years, as many editors prided themselves in how many articles they created. According to Wikipedia:Content assessment, roughly half of the 7,610,352 articles in English Wikipedia are currently rated as Stubs. Some of those have probably been improved but not had a rating upped to Start or even C-class. I'm with Cullen328 on this - if you intend to make an effort to create articles, aim higher than Stub. David notMD (talk) 13:10, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, I didn't realize that half of all en:wp articles are stubs! David10244 (talk) 07:47, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, some stubs are more stubby than others. You can blame me for two, but I'm not unduly ashamed of Albertus Antonius Hinsz. Species stubs are also, in my view, a special case, as they provide a scaffold, something that can easily be fleshed-out by an expert in the biology who doesn't happen to be an expert in Wikipedia. There may be other examples of helpful stubs. Elemimele (talk) 18:59, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Elemimele Yes, the species ones are useful. David10244 (talk) 03:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no set length requirement or minimum number of paragraphs that would designate a piece of writing as "too short" for Wikipedia. However, guidelines advise that articles should offer sufficient details to cover the subject in depth and include reliable citations from unbiased sources. Articles should also be original and not plagiarised from other websites.
An article may be deemed a stub if it offers some helpful information but falls short of the depth of coverage anticipated from an encyclopaedia. Stubs, unlike pages like disambiguation pages, lists, categories, templates, chat pages, and redirects, may be expanded and are not in danger of being deleted.
Editors have debated whether or not very brief pieces may be designated as Featured pieces (FA), nevertheless. Short articles for FA candidates are opposed by several editors due to concerns about possible FAC overload, a shortage of reviewers, and the loss of high-quality main page TFAs. Other reviewers contend that regardless of length, any article that satisfies Wikipedia's notability requirements and meets the FA criteria should be accepted. Akinadewojo (talk) 16:08, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Akinadewojo, this answer is rather confusing in spots, and quite incorrect in others. It almost reads like ChatGPT output. Where did you read about "Featured pieces"? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:30, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, that's a very strange response. Valereee (talk) 18:49, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance please in contributing a source

I would be grateful for some friendly guidance. I do not have an account and, as an elderly stroke survivor with some brain damage, do not think I need one. However, I have just seen a 'citation needed' gap which I think I can fill. Would someone please just take the information and consider putting it in for me?

The gap is in the section on Georges Sorel's ideas on Marxism - second line where the word 'decadence' is used. I suggest that Hannah Arendt may be appropriate - see much of her essay 'On Violence' (1969) Harvest. But it's the word 'decadence' that bothers me. It's an excellent word but I wonder if readers will reliably grasp the lack of vigour and actually feel the intellectual cobwebs that the drafter of the original piece intends. If my proposal of Hannah Arendt found favour, I would suggest re-writing that sentence as: "Sorel is thought by some (for example, Hannah Arendt) as being inclined to grandiose statement and perhaps not that exciting."

I am sorry if I seem to be ducking responsibility but I do not have the mental strength to search for other sources or supports for my suggestion. 78.19.165.58 (talk) 15:35, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP editor, welcome to the Teahouse. All articles have talk pages, which is the place to discuss or suggest improvements to an article. The talk page for Georges Sorel is at Talk:Georges Sorel. If you post your suggestion there, someone may come along and decide to incorporate it into the article. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:12, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tacking on to the IP editor's answer above, if you make an edit request at Talk:Georges Sorel, the chances of your suggestion being seen drastically increases. As Wikipedia is volunteer-driven doing the aforementioned will catch the attention of someone who's interested in fulfilling edit requests. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:56, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are there ever Wiki editor meetings online?

Does Wikipedia ever offer online meetings for its editors, at which news, tips, and trending issues are shared that relate to Wiki editing? Augnablik (talk) 01:53, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Augnablik Yes. Please see WP:MEET for details. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While they aren’t really meetings, we have a Wikipedia IRC chat and a discord. - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 11:09, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IRC good Lord. What is their TeleType address. My idea is to set up a space in like 2nd Life or Habbo Hotel or whatever they have now like that. But I suppose that's silly. Herostratus (talk) 17:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, Discord is just hard to work with in my opinion. There's not a lot you can do, and the bots you can use are either hard to work with, or trying to sell you their NFT scam *cough* mee6. I'd rather use Guilded due to its built-in swiss army knife style.
Furthermore, as a user who mainly edits at a school, most IRC clients go through our firewall, unlike Discord. Explodicator7331 (talk) 14:23, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page Creation

Hi! I'm here to create a page for my upcoming movie regarding my company Iamvram (talk) 07:28, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Wikipedia has a strong conflict of interest policy, meaning that you must declare conflicts on interest, and you cannot use Wikipedia as a form of promotion. If your business gains enough notoriety to merit an article on Wikipedia, it will be created by neutral editors and be written in a formal, balanced tone. JML1148 (Talk | Contribs) 07:46, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Iamvram I am sure that JML meant to say "notability", not "notoriety". An "upcoming" movie won't have any reviews yet, and it will be hard to find info that was written about the movie that didn't come from you or anyone involved with the movie. That's what's required to base an article on. David10244 (talk) 07:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Iamvram Upcoming films generally do not merit articles, per the definition of a notable film, unless the production of the film itself has received significant coverage(not just the mere fact that it occurred). As noted, typically to merit an article a film must have received reviews that can be summarized. Furthermore, if it's from your company, you have a conflict of interest and need to declare as a paid editor, a Terms of Use requirement. 331dot (talk) 09:00, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Iamvram Please be careful when you try to create an article. Editing an existing article about a movie, changing all of the content to reflect your movie, and saving that, is not the way to create an article. Your edits were undone, so no lasting harm was done. Please read WP:YFA for some information on how to create an article, and what is required to make a valid article that will be accepted. Thanks. David10244 (talk) 04:06, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invisibility of the original source of a topic

Thank you This is my first attempt at inserting a proposal for the above topic. Is there an easier way to find how to create a proposal page for considering the change. Kindly reply on my email, (Redacted) Hasujee (talk) 14:06, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hasujee It is unwise to post your email publicly, for security reasons. If you want to allow others to email you, they may use the "Email this user" function on your user talk page(which you already have active). Furthermore, most Wikipedia matters are discussed on wiki for openness and transparency. 331dot (talk) 14:16, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

First party sources, from parties engaged in an agreement with the article subject, to verify claims.

Hello! Im not a new user but I was hoping to ask a question here.

I have never had a mind for sourcing policy, and I recently had a scenario I wasnt entirely sure of. Im not very good at remembering when what sources can be used, so I wanted to ask; If party A claims to associate with party B, would a first party source (EG party B's website) be a valid source to verify that claim, or would the claim need a source from an uninvolved party? Googleguy007 (talk) 15:27, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My assumption for this would be that party B's first party source could be used to verify the relationship itself, but not the specifics of the relationship, but I may be getting aspects of verifability and notability guidelines mixxed up there :p. Googleguy007 (talk) 15:31, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Googleguy007 What if party B is not telling the truth? Maybe both have a reason to claim that they associate, when they don't. That's why we sometimes mention sources with "a reputation for fact-checking and error correction". David10244 (talk) 09:53, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mill Valley article

I know most people monitoring the Teahouse probably aren't very specialized in pop music and similar topics, but this is kind of a half-assed answer to a reasonable question, and some additional perspective(s) would be greatly appreciated. (Previous messages were in the summaries in the edit history for the article) TrevortniDesserpedx (talk) 17:39, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Trevortnidesserped, welcome to the Teahouse. Beware of canvassing. If you need more participants in a discussion, there are lists of possible venues here and here. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:47, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Trevortnidesserped. So the page has been turned into a redirect. The editor who reverted you and again made it a redirect left the following edit summary: Restoring revision ... That's not how it works. You must provide in-depth coverage to show it meets GNG (General notability guideline), which this is lacking. In addition, re-adding unsourced information is a violation of WP:VERIFY, and as per WP:BURDEN, re-adding it is considered disruptive editing.
Well, certainly in parts it needs more independent, secondary reliable sources that give significant mention to the subject, and there's one section "Composition" that is completely unsourced (or is that handled in the same way that "Premise" or "Plot" is dealt with in novels, without needing to be sourced?). Any significant facts need to be backed up by citations. See also Notability (music).
And obviously the article should be written to reflect the content of sources, not the other way around.
I haven't looked into the actual content of the citations, but as a rule of thumb, as a minimum you need maybe 3 strong references to establish notability for a short article; obviously more for longer content. Regards, Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Link bypassing redirect. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:10, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Esowteric, the redirect has already been re-removed by Sungodtemple. See talk page. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:15, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks. Will have a look. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:17, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(Initially in response to Esowteric) Thanks for your assistance. I don't know about you, but Billboard magazine, Rolling Stone magazine, Life magazine, Record World AND AllMusic...there are at least 3 strong references within that cluster, if not all of them — and that's in addition to all the other citations which include a few published books, one of which by Joel Whitburn. I was in the middle of writing this message when I realized the page is back to normal, but I'm leaving this here in the event of further debate. Thanks again. TrevortniDesserpedx (talk) 18:21, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think you have a strong case, though the editor may take it to WP:AfD. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 18:24, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ALLMUSIC is not agreed to be a reliable source. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 00:03, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, @Trevortnidesserped, so as well as earlier inserting a tag for "needs additional citations for verification", even though they've deleted the only unsourced section, though the short "Background" section relies on just one citation, the editor has now added a tag to the effect that "this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline" but not (at least yet) taken it to AfD. If you can come up with more references, fine (and double check your use of existing references), but consider calmly replying on the article's talk page, stating your case, and questioning the editor's tags. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 19:08, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, consider wikilinking the work/publisher in your refs. Some editors are less likely to casually dismiss such refs. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 19:14, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Trevortnidesserped, I've done a bit of minor work on the article: found another ref, added and wikilinked works/publishers; marked one short paragraph as having a self-published source (iUniverse), so that brief review needs removing. Of course edit or remove my edits as you see fit. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 21:15, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Found another reliable, though minor, ref. Also removed review snippets originally from Time and Rolling Stone which were indirectly references. You (or a willing editor with library access) need to obtain and work on the originals. Have found another referenced way to mention the two publications, though not ideal. Have also more explicitly asserted notability in the lede. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 10:34, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorted. Better take my meds now and chill for a while. :) Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 13:46, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Draft for Review: Rica Cruz

Hello! I got a bit confused because there was no notification after I published my draft article. To be clear, is it already up for review? Here's the link to my draft. Draft:Rica Cruz - Wikipedia TheBandShirleyFan (talk) 06:06, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, what appears to have happened is that you added the template in Visual Editor, which meant it treated it as normal text rather than wikitext. To fix this, remove the template that didn't work and add it back after changing to Source Editor. I would fix this myself, but this would mean it would treat me as the article creator rather than you. JML1148 (Talk | Contribs) 07:11, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Thanks for the help. I've already done as you said. Can I have it checked if it's already in line for the review? TheBandShirleyFan (talk) 08:46, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, TheBandShirleyFan, and welcome to the Teahouse. If you look at the draft now, there is a big yellow box that says "Review waiting, please be patient." ColinFine (talk) 09:07, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding No Citation Temple

If I found an article having zero reference or citation and if I add one or two reliable Reference then should I remove or not the template, saying that this article does not have any source. EncyclopediaEagle (talk) 10:02, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but consider replacing {{Unreferenced}} with {{Refimprove}} if not everything is referenced. Mjroots (talk) 10:08, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks EncyclopediaEagle (talk) 10:11, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding moving a page from draft to article

Should I move or not a draft into Mainspace by bypassing afc process ,if article is notable and cited with reliable sources. Because it takes 3 or more month for approval of a draft. I am only and only talking about article on a village and on a medical College. EncyclopediaEagle (talk) 10:49, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

EncyclopediaEagle, your premise is wrong. It's not true that it takes three or more months for a draft to be approved. Yes, this can happen. It doesn't necessarily happen. Additionally, vanishingly few articles are notable. (An exception is the article on John Seigenthaler, which became notorious for unfortunate reasons.) I think it's better not to bypass AFC until you find reviewers complementing you on your drafts and suggesting that you bypass AFC. -- Hoary (talk) 12:03, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given you have only had an account for four days, and have now created two drafts, but have no track record for having AfC's approved, I strongly recommend continuing with AfC. Skipping AfC runs the risk that when the article gets looked at by New Pages Patrol it could be flipped to draft, or more severe, nominated for deletion (or even Speedy deleted). David notMD (talk) 17:07, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@EncyclopediaEagle All new articles have to meet Wikipedia's notability requirements and that's the usual challenge for new editors since the sources quoted need to demonstrate that they do so using sources which meet the golden rules. There is a big difference between drafts relating to villages and those relating to colleges, however. By community consensus described at WP:GEOLAND, virtually any inhabited place is assumed to be notable, whereas institutions like colleges have to meet WP:NCORP, which in practice is a much more difficult to establish. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:16, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The translation tool isn't working

This is a general problem I am having. I am trying to create a draft for AfC for translation (don't mee the requirements) and when I try to click "translate paragraph" nothing appears. I'd edit it 100% but NOTHING appears. I have tried on multiple browsers. Chacabangaso (talk) 16:29, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chacabangaso, welcome to the Teahouse. Which translation tool are you trying to use? This one - WP:Content translation tool (which is restricted to extended confirmed accounts)? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah but I should be allowed to make a draft Chacabangaso (talk) 17:07, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chacabangaso, I don't see any exception for draftspace. Have you been told - or read somewhere - that there is such an exception? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:10, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I read on the page that users can still submit it to AfC Chacabangaso (talk) 17:11, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chacabangaso, you can certainly translate an article and submit it to AfC, but I believe you will have to do it manually, without the use of the tool. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:15, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Damn ok ty Chacabangaso (talk) 17:15, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit confused because it seems there is a way - Draft:Fabio Gallia was created by a non-extended confirmed user and has content translation tags. Automatic machine translation is completely disabled on English Wikipedia, though, @Chacabangaso, no matter your account status. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:16, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone can create a draft, but no one can use machine translation. This is actually a good thing: I find that in the process of manually translating articles, I check sources, check referencing, sometimes find that the original source says something different to what I'm translating, sometimes find additional information elsewhere, and other sourcing. And of course I check all the wiki-links, to make sure that they point to the best English options (foreign WP links may point to a related article where there is no "main" article in that language, but there might be a main one here). Viva humanity! Long may real human translation remain relevant! Elemimele (talk) 18:47, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Elemimele What's this "viva" you mention? This is the English Wikipedia! Should we translate "viva"? (Kidding.) David10244 (talk) 04:11, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

my name is not important

i plan on "changing" some images soon, now that i got a functional camera, so just in case i get into a case like this

say a (very fictional) truck enthusiast and professional shitposter named mark rex regis finds his own article. it's neutral enough, covers his career accurately, from the good things he did to the cringe he posted in #general. but he sees his picutre, from the 2013 piratecon, and makes his own wp account (complete with coi notice) to complain about that picture's quality being "not $wag money". the other users agree, and he goes off to get a better one

after a few legal hoops to get a good one (from the 2019 piratecon) in public domain, the picture is uploaded to commons and added to his article... except his Dumb Ass forgot to rename it to something that wasn't "fart sex penis.jpeg.gif.spr.png"

from that point, does he or someone else just rename it to something normal or is there something more to it? worst case scenarios, from what i know, would be him getting a warning or the whole thing being shut down from the moment he posted the original complaint on his article's talk page cogsan (talk) 17:41, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cog-san: This question would be better for commons, however the answer is that yes the file can be renamed on commons (in fact I believe this is one of the many reasons you would do so). The user would still most likely be warned for doing so and advised to be more careful in the future, but the file can be renamed. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:45, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Info Boxes

Hi, I’ve been practising editing on Wikipedia for the last couple of hours, however, I’m curious how I could use multiple infoboxes but have them merged all together. For example, I have a infobox for a musician but he/she also has history in pro wrestling and would also want to create an infobox for that. But doing this makes them two separate boxes and wondering how you can merge them both together.

Thx Peterxo (talk) 18:50, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If I were you, I'd just have two infoboxes. If you can, I'd also recommend having the infobox on their wrestling information be next to the paragraph that goes into more depth about it. Dilpickl (talk) 19:01, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Peterxo, welcome to the Teahouse. Some infoboxes can have other infoboxes embedded into them, but not all infoboxes - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Infoboxes/embed. You would need to check the infobox documentation to see if it's possible and how to do it (for example, Template:Infobox musical artist).
On another note, while you've been experimenting, you've been uploading various images to Wikipedia tagged as Own work. FYI, "own work" means that you took the photo and own the copyright to it. One of the images has already been nominated for speedy deletion as a copyright violation. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:02, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Peterxo Did you mean to remove all article content? The submittal was declined because there is no content nor references. David notMD (talk) 20:16, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@David notMD, the declined submission was about someone else. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:18, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No Sorry, I was trying to edit where I got the photo from, figured it out. Apologies Peterxo (talk) 20:26, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Peterxo, you've been editing over on Wikimedia Commons. That's a different site, one which hosts many of the images used in various Wikimedia Foundation projects, including English Wikipedia. Images uploaded here are cross-uploaded to Commons if they meet its requirements.
Please do not download images you find on the internet and then upload them here unless you've checked their copyright status carefully to be sure everything is compatible. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:36, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Peterxo Per what IP 199 said, your upload of Zak Holman.jpg will likely be deleted, unless you can show that you took the picture yourself. That's what the "own work" tag means. David10244 (talk) 04:17, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Review Draft: İlyas İlbey

I created a thread before asking for help in this area. I rearranged the draft. I have edited the categories. But I guess you are using wiki tools and I don't have that. There was a category that I couldn't delete. I can't see this category in the source code of the draft. Could you please review the page again?

@Coshua23, your draft has been submitted for review. As the banner says, Review waiting, please be patient. This may take 4 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order. Since all of your sources are in Turkish, it will probably take longer than average. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:02, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

At what level does a politicians get a Wikipedia page?

At what level does a politician get a Wikipedia page? In the US I see people with pages despite only being in the lower hosue of a state legislature. In addition I was looking a the President of Nauru and saw some small pages. Do all head of states get a page or what is the requirement? LuxembourgLover (talk) 23:43, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, LuxembourgLover! For politician guidelines, you can read WP:NPOLITICIAN! Tails Wx 23:45, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to the notability principle of Wikipedia, a politician can get a Wikipedia page only if they have reached a particular level of online visibility. This means that the politician about whom you are planning on creating a Wikipedia page must be notable on other online platforms before they can get on Wikipedia. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the politician meets Wikipedia's notability criteria, which require significant coverage in reliable, independent sources. Once the notability criterion is met, a politician can get a Wikipedia page regardless of their level, whether it is at a national or international level. erasing info

Is it true that you can pay Wikipedia to erase things on your page, as alluded to in this article? https://www.huffpost.com/entry/vivek-ramaswamy-wikipedia-editor_n_6452957de4b029f56a146123 Napperd22 (talk) 00:08, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editors are volunteers, i.e., not employees. Some editors accept payment to edit; they are supposed to declare their paid status on their User page. What happened in that example is a person was paid to remove content from an article. It is VERY possible that the content was true and properly referenced, meaning that a different editor may decide to revert (reverse) the deleted content edit. David notMD (talk) 00:14, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The article doesn't allude to this. It says that a particular editor was paid to remove content. The article points to that editor's user page, where he says that Vivek Ramaswamy paid him to edit. Somewhere in this set of edits, "his studies were supported by a postgraduate fellowship awarded to him by [[The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans]].<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanvardi/2015/09/09/the-30-year-old-ceo-conjuring-drug-companies-from-thin-air/|title=The 30-Year-Old CEO Conjuring Drug Companies From Thin Air|first=Nathan|last=Vardi|website=Forbes}}</ref>" was removed. At least in its current state, the cited source doesn't contain the string "soros". (However, see this.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:39, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox on user page

Can I use infobox Wikipedia user on my user page because Wikipedia policy states that There is no requirement for an infobox or a particular layout, and users should not feel compelled to use them. According to me This means that while infoboxes are allowed on user pages, they are not mandatory, and users are free to present their information in any way they prefer. The policy emphasizes that the purpose of user pages is to provide information about the user's activities on Wikipedia, and that the information should be relevant and in line with Wikipedia's content policies. EncyclopediaEagle (talk) 02:02, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am the person who suggested you not use an Infobox on your User page, and I am of the opinion that neither your blood type nor your marital status relate to your intentions as an editor. I am curious as to what other Teahosue hosts might say about Infoboxing a User page. David notMD (talk) 03:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this ,i have successfully removed my blood group and marital status. EncyclopediaEagle (talk) 03:24, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(Not a host, just someone who wanders in and out of the Teahouse from time to time)
I'd say the benchmark is mostly "would this be out of place on a user page if it was in prose and/or userboxes rather than an infobox?".
If it's fine to have there in prose, formatting it into an infobox makes little enough difference in most situations. Similarly, if it would be a blatant no-go in prose, it obviously also wouldn't fly in an infobox.
(It does somewhat increase the userpage's visual resemblance to an actual article, though, so some extra caution is warranted to ensure the user page doesn't end up looking like an attempt at self-promotion, nor otherwise comes across as deceptive) AddWittyNameHere 03:43, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I note that an infobox template specifically for user pages does exist. Personally, I don't see a problem with it considering that many users have an obscene amount of user boxes with obscure information about themselves such as political affiliation, etc. ShaveKongo (talk) 03:36, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For an editor to specify their blood group (whether via userbox or plain text) would have no practical application and might suggest that the editor was sufficiently uninformed, credulous or thick-witted to fall for this silliness. -- Hoary (talk) 03:51, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Id like to add some information in the form of Social and News Events for the town of Dildo, Newfoundland. The significance is that an iceberg very loosely resembling the towns name in a rather unusual circumstance has factually occurred.

https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/giant-phallus-shaped-iceberg-floating-in-conception-bay-surprises-residents-of-dildo-canada

This is not satire, this is an actual event. but the wiki page is protected. Asking for permission to be authorized. AndrewM81 (talk) 02:09, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly? I wouldn't add this. In the grand scheme of things this is just some neat trivia and not a significant event in the town's history. WP:NOTNEWS would also apply in this case. SkyWarrior 02:19, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This fine, upstanding iceberg doesn't really have all that much to do with Dildo. It certainly was newsworthy: I encountered it in The Guardian ("Chilly willy: photo of phallic iceberg off Canadian coast prompts merriment"). If it can later be shown to have lived long in the memories (or anyway reliable sources) of the good folk of Dildo or elsewhere, perhaps it can have its own article. -- Hoary (talk) 04:00, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Even though the photographer is from the town, I think the whole thing is silly. Should the article on Round Rock, Texas have a note that a round rock was found? Well, maybe if a photographer from Round Rock took a picture of a round rock... David10244 (talk) 04:37, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the unnecessary reversion of edited information

I recently edited the "etymology" division of the page, since the pre-existing explanation was totally wrong and misleading. But soon, the edit was reverted.

Coming from Sri Adi Shankaracharya's birth country,I am pretty sure the reversion contains false information.

It is sad to see some foreign identity manipulating this page to wrong notions. The reverter's knowledge of Sanskrit and Indian philosophy is to be thoroughly checked, because their explanation seems to be superficial and wrong.

Please look into it and do the necessary.

Translation of an article form Serbian Wikipedia to English Wikipedia

Hello,

I recently started translating 2 Wikipedia articles from Serbian to English. I used the add language/translate page option in the top right corner of the page. I have managed to translate the page but I can only publish it as a personal or community draft. I want to publish it as an article that can be linked to the original article form Serbian Wikipedia. The site provides a reason to why I can not publish it as a New Page as lack of experience in editing and translating. Is there a way to go around this restriction and get my translation published?

Thanks in advance Juan Carlos Topić (talk) 10:17, 4 May 2023 (UTC) Juan Carlos Topić[reply]

Hello, Juan Carlos Topić. You can submit Draft:Constitution of Serbia from 1869. for review via the WP:AFC process whenever you think it is ready (I have added the appropriate template for that). The topic is almost certainly notable, however there are are a couple of points that you would do well to correct before submitting:
  1. There are many typos. The dot in the article title will be taken care of by the reviewer, but the lead breaks paragraph in the middle of a sentence (the constitution was in force in two periods, 1869-1888. (line break) and 1894-1901)
  2. There are many external links in the body of the article - generally those should be transformed into references, see WP:ELNO
  3. The infobox is broken. I suppose you copy-pasted the image links from Serbian Wikipedia. Images uploaded locally to Serbian Wikipedia cannot be accessed from English Wikipedia. Check if you can transfer the image to Wikimedia Commons (where it is accessible to all Wikipedias) - see WP:TOCOMMONS.
  4. In my opinion, the draft is extremely long, which makes it very arduous to read, especially without any images. But that might be a matter of taste (and at any rate the lead paragraph is sufficiently condensed to satisfy most readers).
If you correct #1 and #2, I believe the draft will be swiftly accepted. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 11:30, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Walter Tau We don't put external links like that within the body text of articles (see WP:ELNO). In this case, you just want to verify in a citation that one patent claims priority to another, using the relevant primary source. The citation template {{cite patent}} for US6258540 is all that will be required, since it gives automatic links within the reference section to the Espacenet database which has the relevant information. I'll edit the article in a moment to include what I think is needed. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:55, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and welcome to the Teahouse. Regarding patents, see Mike Turnbull's answer above. Generally:
This is how to link to an article, by the way: [[Ariosa v. Sequenom]]. And to sign a comment, type ~~~~ at the end.
You're trying to create an external link, but really you do not want external links in the body of an article. This is is how [https:/www.etc.com/ Text].
You really want to use citations. The simplest reference is a bare URL, like so: <ref>https:/www.etc.com/</ref>, but they suffer from "link rot" as pages are moved or deleted over time, and there's little indication of what to search for online.
Better still, you want to use full citations. See Wikipedia:Citing sources. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 11:58, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help with writing my first page. Eek!

So here I am...

All tips and help, gratefully received.

Thanks in advance, Nikki :-) Nikki Wordsmith (talk) 13:19, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Nikki Wordsmith I've added a few basic links to your Talk Page, which I hope will help. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:42, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can also create a free account on Youtube, and search for wikipedia help. It's much easier than reading.🙂 Remember: All new articles must be created & edited in your Sandbox (only when they are ready for publishing do you bring them up to main space). Find your sandbox here: On the top right of your screen, select the down arrow, and choose "Sandbox" (you will see that it's your sandbox by the heading of the page). Then create your article's name by selecting the "Edit source" submenu, by typing the name of your article and surrounding it by double brackets, and then inserting a slash in front of your article's name. For example, you would create an article on "Winnie the Poo" by typing: /Winnie the Poo (surrounded by 2 sets of lowercase brackets to right of the letter "P" on your keyboard, which are always invisible in Wikipedia). Then save the name by selecting "Publish changes" at the bottom left. To start writing your story, just select the articles name. However, 1) remember not to change your article's name, or you risk losing your document, and 2) stale stories are deleted after 6 months of inactivity.

In the United States, in the 8th Grade, we were taught the format for a report. That's what you must use here: 1) An introduction, 2) the main body of your report, 3) footnotes, 4) references, and 5) external links (unique to wikipedia).

To publish your story, select (from the top right) "Tools", "Move", in the 'New title' box select "(Article)", to it's right delete your name and the slash, so that only the article name appears; in 'Reason' select "Publish page to main space", and last, select "Move Page".

Emails from an LTA

A few years ago in 2020, I used to receive emails from an LTA. They have now resumed their emails. I haven’t been responding to their emails ever since. I have reported the email address to Google. Since then, I have set aside another email to use for Wikipedia matters. They are sending them to my personal email. I was wondering if there is anything that I, the WMF, or Google can do to stop the emails from the LTA. I can send you a copy of their email if you need it. Thank you. Interstellarity (talk) 13:47, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Interstellarity: First, please do not send any of us here a copy of the email. We do not need that information and should not receive it. Second, I suggest reading WP:EMAILABUSE which details what you should do if you receive abusive emails. I don't believe Google will do anything since the user technically is not breaking any of their rules. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:55, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your personal email system (whatever you use) should have a feature to block emails from specific addresses. Try that. --Jayron32 14:20, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would assume they use Gmail since they mention they reported the abuser to Google. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:33, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32 and @Blaze Wolf: I use Proton Mail for my personal email while the sender uses Gmail. That’s why I reported the email to Google. I’m not sure if any of you are familiar with Proton Mail, but that’s what I use. Interstellarity (talk) 14:37, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This has several helpful links to instructions on how to block a sender in ProtonMail. --Jayron32 14:40, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Interstellarity As BlazeWolf mentioned, Google probably won't do anything, and I think his reason(ing) is correct. David10244 (talk) 04:56, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Interstellarity Are they emailing you directly, or are they sending you emails through the "email this user" feature of Wikipedia? If it's the first one the advice above is correct and you'll need to block them through your email software, if it's the second there's a few things you can do.
In your preferences page there's an option called "Allow emails from brand-new users", which you can disable, useful if the LTA is making throwaway accounts to harass you. There's also an option called "Prohibit these users from emailing me:" where you can enter their usernames to stop them sending you stuff. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 14:04, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Interstellarity: I think you're probably better off further discussing this off Wikipedia using email, WP:IRC or WP:Discord. If you're being harassed by an LTA, then you probably should assume that they're watching your Wikipedia edits. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:17, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TrademarkedTarantula: Hello Tarantula! Would you mind telling me what article you're seeing this on? Usually this means the article reads like its trying to sell you something or convince you about something/into doing something and that it violates our policy on maintaining a neutral point of view, however sometimes an editor adds this tag and no one removes it even if the issue is no longer there because they're either afraid to do so or aren't sure if the issue is fixed. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:27, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, @TrademarkedTarantula, and welcome to the Teahouse. There's information at WP:NOTADVERT. We want to describe the subject by neutrally summarizing what reliable sources say. Wikitia

Can editors link wikitia to wikipedia? I'm having trouble with it. Lord Milner (talk) 14:24, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Milner: I'm not sure what you mean. Are you referring to adding a link to Wikipedia from Fandom (the new name of Wikia Unless Wikitia is a different thing) or adding a link to Fandom from Wikipedia?Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:28, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikitia is a different project altogether, completely unrelated to Wikipedia, so there's no method of linking there like there is for Wiktionary, etc. Is there a reason you wanted to link there? Valereee (talk) 14:30, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I created the wikipedia page "Milner's Kindergarten", and I'm trying to create an internal link to the name "Peter Perry (Colonialist)" (found in 'Work in South Africa/Pre-Reconstruction, 2nd line'). However, his info only shows up on wikitia. Should the page be recreated on wikipedia for the purpose? (I tried linking to the wikitia site with this post, & my edit was not saved because wikitia is blacklisted by wikipedia). Lord Milner (talk) 14:42, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All they did was copy your draft from 2021 (Draft:Peter Perry (Colonialist)), which was later deleted because it hadn't been edited for six months. If you'd like to work on the draft again, you can request undeletion at WP:REFUND/G13, or you can leave his name unlinked in the article, but there is zero reason to ever link to Wikitia because everything on there is user-generated and not reliable, and in fact much more spammy than Wikipedia as the threshold for inclusion is basically zero. @Blaze Wolf Fandom is now what was once called Wikia, originally with Jimbo involved. There is still a type of link that works via Interwiki mapping (see meta:Interwiki map at the top of that page) allowing links to Fandom articles that look a lot like standard wikilinks. So, for example, I can use Wikia:mario:The Super Mario Bros. Movie to give a link that would alternatively go via this URL. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:12, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You could ask the original draft author to place a {{Db-g7}} tag on it. An author can request deletion of their own article if no one else has made substantial contributions to it. Do not make any other edits to the article though, as any new edit that isn't the template I recommended will reset the 6 month timer. Hope this helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:41, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reflecting citations in a biographical article

Hi, if someone's work is extensively cited in other books and journal papers, what's the best way to reflect that in a biographical article about that person?

Specifically, I'm working on Draft:Janet Wilson James and her works have been cited as a source in various other books and journal articles/papers. Is there way to reflect this in her article? Should it be reflected in her article?

Thanks in advance. UMStellify (talk) 18:52, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure if it's relevant. It would depend on context. As someone who worked in the scholarly publishing field for a few years in my past, I know that many academic journal articles cite other works simply to inflate the citation count (especially to get beyond a minimum threshold imposed by the journal) and to increase the reputation score of their colleagues. If her work has been described as being a major influence or inspiration in another work, then definitely that should be mentioned, but there would be no need to mention a minor citation of a factoid in a paper somewhere. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That helps. So, Janet James Wilson was the co-editor of three volumes of a biographical dictionary, Notable American Women, in addition to her dissertation and another book which significantly influenced research in women's studies and gender studies. UMStellify (talk) 21:50, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be best if you can find book reviews and also sources which contextualize, analyze, and situate these works within the broader literature — i.e., more than works which just merely cite these works for the information therein. Umimmak (talk) 21:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, already found and used those references. I was just wondering if these citations should also be included in the main article. Skipping them for now. UMStellify (talk) 21:59, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Image permissions

Hello! I have a question regarding the use of an image that was granted permission for use on the Wikipedia page. It's an image of a fungal species, which was previously lacking a (well-developed) page. It was printed in a scientific publication, and after reaching out to the corresponding author, permission was granted for use on the page. I have the emails documenting their consent for us, however, I'm not sure how to properly navigate through the prompts on the Upload Wizard. Would this fall under the category of non-free but Fair Use? Or, do I need to see if they are willing to declare this as a "free" image? Do I need to ask more specifically about their copyrights?

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance!

Lichenicolous (talk) 20:12, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Lichenicolous, welcome to the Teahouse. I don't see how this image could be used under our non-free content provisions (and if it could be, you wouldn't need anyone's permission to use it). If the copyright holder wishes to release the image under a compatible license, they need to email Wikimedia Commons. Here's a link to the instructions and some example templates: link. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:18, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lichenicolous Well done on taking the initiative and getting the agreement of the photographer to release their photo. Whilst they may well wish to email their permission with our formal template, as suggested above, another way is to encourage the author/photographer to simply create a free Wikipedia account and upload it themselves direct to Wikimedia Commons. As an example, I managed to get the photographer of a new species called Syracosphaera azureaplaneta to do precisely that. But if they have no interest in Wikipedia, emailing their permission is still probably the easiest way. Obviously, they are in a position to choose what resolution of image they wish to make available under our 'Creative Commons' agreement. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 21:17, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lichenicolous I'll emphasize that the copyright holder of the image needs to do the e-mailing, or the uploading of the image and giving permission in the upload process. You cannot do it for them. For a published paper, I am not sure if the corresponding author has that power either. David10244 (talk) 05:02, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Nick Moyes and @David10244! I appreciate your prompt and thorough insight. Hopefully they will still be on board and willing to go the extra step to increase the accessibility and availability of their work. Fingers crossed!

nowiki added tag

Hello, I've noticed that occasionally my edits are logged with the tag "nowiki added." From what I can tell it only happens when I use the En Dash template, but, again, only happens occasionally. I use the visual editor so the "Visual edit" tag is always logged.

What does the "nowiki added" tag mean?

Thanks,

Edward Bednar (talk) 21:17, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Edward Bednar, welcome to the Teahouse. It means that a nowiki tag was added in your edit. It's quite obvious in source mode - perhaps not so much in VE? See this edit of yours as an example. It seems to occur when you add the endash template inside the wikilink. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:28, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Edward Bednar: Without nowiki, a word right after a link with no space or other separator is included in the link text: Walla Walla–based. VisualEditor avoids this by inserting nowiki: Walla Walla–based. I don't know a guideline about it but it looks odd to me to have the dash inside the link. If it's outside then it counts as a separator betwen the link and the next word so nowiki is not needed: Walla Walla–based. It also means a piped link isn't needed for the dash (it's still needed in this example where Walla Walla is linked to Walla Walla Regional Airport). An en dash is usually added as a character and not a template: Walla Walla–based. In VisualEditor, en dash is the first character in the Ω menu. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. Makes perfect sense. I will also start using the Ω menu for these characters instead of the templates. Not sure how I landed on using the en and em dash templates, in the first place.
Thanks again.

Previously when I created such a request someone did it almost instantly, but this time it has been many hours. Rescuing a deleted page, history is intact

I'll just quote my original text, and the reply, at User talk:Hey man im josh#Thank you!

... for reviewing all those #Redirect articles. I honestly don't know how many of them will ever be used... but, as with many other redirects, they're there just in case someone searches for those alternative/inflected names first, to save them repeated varying searches.

Question, by the way: "Hajdučka Republika Mijata Tomića" got deleted, or rather, merged/redirected into "Blidinje plateau#Hajdučka Republika Mijata Tomića", for 'lack of [documented] notability'. I was starting to look at what hadn't been but could be successfully made RS citations — somewhat disadvantaged by my not being a native reader of Croatian, Bosnian, or Serbian (the sources' languages) — when the original page died. I'd love to keep working on the article in draftspace, possibly under my userpage, to try to meet the notability requirements... but I don't want to just copy-and-paste the text, thus losing the previous editors' credits. Is it possible to copy the full file (credits/history included) either to "Draft:Hajdučka Republika Mijata Tomića" or to "User:.Raven/Draft:Hajdučka Republika Mijata Tomića"? Or else move it, and create a new redirect in its place? The version I'd need, the last before its being turned into a redirect, is [3] for the article; and the still-existing current version [4] for its talkpage. Please let me know about whatever options I have. Thanks again! – .Raven  .talk 23:42, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @.Raven: No problem, thank YOU for putting the effort in to create those redirects!
So your concern is focused on preserving the page history (a good concern, which I personally appreciate). It's a good question, but there's no way to duplicate the page history, you can only ever have it in one place. So, given that this is the first time I've considering this situation, I'm not 100% confident in the answer I'm about to give but you could probably create the draft, use an edit summary to explain that you're taking the content from the mainspace version's history, then, when the article is ready, request a WP:histmerge. If you did this it would be clear you're trying to act in good faith, but as I said, I'm not 100% that this is the proper way to go about it. I'd recommend that you ask at WP:Teahouse or get a second opinion. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, useful info! Thanks again! – .Raven  .talk 05:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, is there any value in taking it to deletion review, with a plea that although you're not contesting the deletion as such, or wishing to make any negative comment about the closure, this is a special case where you have genuine reason to believe you could improve the article and meet notability if permitted to work on it, and therefore would like to ask if the delete outcome could be mitigated to draftification? Elemimele (talk) 05:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I get notifications for a draft article being possibly deleted if I didn't create it

I am currently working on Draft:Unification Church political views and it is originally very old. How do I ensure I don't forget about it and have it be deleted by accident? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 07:36, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Immanuelle. As long as a draft is edited at least once every six months, it will not be deleted routinely. You can also put the draft on your watchlist, and check for deletion tagging. You could tape a paper note to your refrigerator. Writing a note on the back of your hand with a ballpoint pen may work for a couple of days as well. Cullen328 (talk) 07:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While Cullen has a number of valid methods of a range of effectivenesses, you might want something more handy for dealing with multiple drafts you are trying to manage. One option is to make links on your own user page (or a subpage like User:Immanuelle/drafts to watch) for the various drafts you are working on, and then check those links periodically. Check their histories to see when the last edit was, and if one is getting close to 6 months, make a minor edit to it. That will reset the clock and you can rest assured that it won't be deleted. You could even organize your list of links into a table, putting the last edit date as one of the fields in the table, and when you make an edit, update the table. You can even make the table sortable on the date field so that the oldest ones can be sorted to the top. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:13, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Immanuelle, I found the first sentence of the draft hard to understand, until I realised that it's really about the political views of Sun Myung Moon. Perhaps you could change the name of the draft accordingly? Maproom (talk) 08:37, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sustainable Development Goals

I feel like the second sentence of the first paragraph on Sustainable Development Goals is unnecessary. It is redundant and the names of the 17 goals are already mentioned on Content of the 17 goals. Mox Eden (talk) 10:42, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mox Eden I agree that that sentence is clumsy and has too many links, creating a WP:SEAOFBLUE but bear in mind that the first part of any article is called the WP:LEAD and is supposed to summarise the key points from the rest of the content below. Given the title of the article, putting those goals within the lead in some way seems reasonable. You are free to edit the content to improve the article as you see fit, or to raise your concerns on its Talk Page at Talk:Sustainable Development Goals. How to Use and Display ConnectedContributor Template

Hi, I recently had a page deleted as it "appeared that I was a paid contributor". I edit pages related to the biotech and Pharma sectors, and I am a Pharma employee. However, I am not paid to create or maintain any Wikipedia content.

I have been advised to use the Connected Contributor template to display my associations. I have no idea how to use this template, or the syntax. I believe I display it on my user Talk page, and Talk tabs of pages that I have edited.

Could anyone help me with the syntax please? Best wishes, Jon Knowledgejwl (talk) 12:54, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Knowledgejwl: Hello there! The ConnectedContributor template goes on the talk pages of the articles you edit. To add it, for you it would be {{Connected contributor|user=Knowledgejwl|declared=Revision ID of the addition of the COI template to your userpage which you get from the "oldid=" bit of the URL}}. Now for your userpage you would add {{UserboxCOI|1=Article you have a COI with}}, for each article you can either add a new userbox with the same parameters but a different article name, or you can just add another parameter that same as the "1=" but increment the "1" by 1 each time for each different article up to 9. Hope this helps! ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:47, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RMNP - Redirect problematic ? | Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado | Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba

The abbreviation should be a redirect to both of these pages, not only to Rocky Mountain National Park. I searched RMNP on the wikipedia search bar while wanting to read the Riding Mountain National Park page, but instead got directed to the Rocky Mountain National Park page.

Can a redirect page link to 2 pages ? If affirmative, could a kind being help me figure out how to implement this please ?

Thank you :) Gimly24 (talk) 14:36, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You can create a disambiguation page. Ruslik_Zero 14:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I will look into this :) Gimly24 (talk) 14:45, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
However, from a quick Google search it seems that Rocky Mountain National Park is by far the more common meaning of the acronym. The Redirect should have been left alone and a new dab page created, with a hatnote at the destination of the redirect. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:00, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I am asking for your help with the article mentioned in the headline. The article was initially moved from the main space to draft because of a thought that I am a paid editor (which was already solved) and bad refs. If you will have time to look at the article's edit history and get to know the story, I would really appreciate it. I tried to reach out to a person who reviewed the draft but didn't get an answer for like 5 days.

I wanted to provide some more sources and references and hear your opinion about it. Firstly, I wanted to note that the article initially had secondary sources (as explained in Wikipedia rules) and also one primary one (which is fortunately still in the draft). I also found some more sources, mentions and stories about Gray and Sons, which can serve as in-depth, independent, and reliable, and also, why not, secondary sources for the article.

  • The Entrepreneurial Spirit Lives: 25 Tales to Help Entrepreneurs Start, Grow, and Succeed in Small Business" by Bill Roark. This book is widely recognized, and gives information about businesses and their stories, including Gray and Sons.
  • Jewelry and Gems: The Buying Guide, 8th Edition by Antoinette Matlins and A.C. Bonanno. Also a reputable book and can serve most probably as a secondary and reliable source, because it just gives small mentions about the company.
  • Jewelry International Vol. III by Tourbillon International. Explains the story of Gray and Sons and how they started out in the United States,
  • The Watch, Thoroughly Revised by Gene Stone and Stephen Pulvirent. In the book, there are stories about Gray and Sons and how they succeeded in the watch retailing industry.
  • Jewelry and Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Tradition by Elyse Zorn Karlin. In this book, there are mentions of the company and its Art Deco and Art Nouveau jewelry.

Hopefully, these sources will be enough for the article. If you need the sources for the press release, news mentions, and other blogs in other websites as secondary sources, please let me know. Thank you so much! Best regards Gevorg Ghazaryan (talk) 15:05, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gevorg Ghazaryan, Draft:Gray and Sons is certainly not acceptable as a Wikipedia article in its current state. To establish that the business is notable enough to warrant an article, you'll need to cite several reliable independent sources each with extensive discussion of the subject. It currently cites only one source, which is not independent, being based on what the business's founder has said. Adding sources based on press releases (not independent) and blogs (not reliable) won't help. Maproom (talk) 15:31, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maproom, thank you for answering to my inquiry. I agree with you that in its current state, it is not acceptable, as it was changed many times since its initial publication. I provided some more sources above, which can be in-depth, independent, and reliable sources for the article, and wanted to hear your opinion on them. Thank you --Gevorg Ghazaryan (talk) 15:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe those sources are useful. As I don't have access to any of them, I can't tell. Maproom (talk) 15:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request editorial review for improvement: Gilbert Blaize Rego

Hello Wiki Editors,

I have taken an initiative on my own, to expand the stub into an article on:

Gilbert Blaize Rego

I have completed my research, cited, sourced, and written all that I have on late. Bishop Rego, who died in 2012, and whose stub I came across in writing another article. Your editorial suggestions, input for improvement would be appreciated very much!

Thanking you ahead for your time, effort and advice. Have a great weekend!

Hello, Setwikirec0, and welcome to the Teahouse. On a quick look, it appears that you have added a number of sources, but few if any of them meet the triple requirements of Golden rule. Many are not independent (they are from organisations that Rego was affiliated with) and several contain only a mention of him.
Most of these should be removed, together with any information which is not derived from an acceptable source (a limited amount of information may come from non-independent sources - see PRIMARY - but the bulk of the information in the article must come from independent sources). Unless there are several such sources, then the article will not establish that Rego meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and the article is liable to be deleted.
Also, remove all external links from the article text (see WP:EL), and from the references, except for a link to the source being cited. ColinFine (talk) 22:02, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Draft: The IBET PhD Project

Hello, I am asking for some help mentioned in the headline. My original submission was rejected due to unsatisfactory references. I added some additional information and outside sources, but would like to know if I'm heading in the right direction. Could anyone give the draft a look and tell me what else I should include? I'd like to add our partnerships, awards, etc., but want to get some guidance first. Thanks in advance! Akashiadanielle (talk) 15:27, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy link: Draft:The IBET PhD Project.   Akashiadanielle, to establish thatThe IBET PhD Project is notable enough for a Wikipedia article, you'll need to cite some reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. All the sources currently cited are based on press releases, and so not independent. Maproom (talk) 15:44, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong image in wiki page

The page about the polearm known as "Voulge" (vouge as well) contains the wrong image. The information in the page itself seems perfectly fine. At least it fits with what I know. The problem is that the image shows a double-edged sword, when the polearm in question is a single-edged blade attached to a long wooden stick. The polearm itself does not resemble in any way any kind of sword like the one shown in the image. I really don't know where to say/post this, so if nobody here can fix it maybe someone could point me to where I should go with this. The page in question is this one here Voulge Canzandridas (talk) 16:22, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That specific image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons, so if there are factual mistakes in the image itself, that would be discussed and handled there not here. For the specific case, the file is sourced to [5]. The object is in the Army Museum (Paris), where it is titled "Vouge, France, vers 1450" and the description that clearly calls it a vouge. That seems like an authoritative source ("reliable" in wikipedia terms). DMacks (talk) 16:33, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery modification to a draft

I received an email yesterday (May 4 2023) from wikimedia of an anonymous change to a draft article I've written. The email has a number of wikipedia links where I could supposedly see the changes, and includes the line: Editor's summary: Johasouerp coumilla Agreed banik Bangladesh 0200019508749.

I've looked at the draft and don't see any changes, the anonymous editor didn't post anything in the draft's talk page, and the history tab doesn't show any change. The editor has no email address (the user ID is 2400:C600:3372:BECF:1:0:F5A6:BE9D).

What would have triggered this message? Should I be concerned (e.g., about malicious editing)? Johsebb (talk) 16:35, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Subject Article

I am a publicist for notable person, have written his bio for posting to Wikipedia with reliable sources and was paid to write it. Now that I am ready to post it, is it better to create an account in his name, create a subpage from the one I created under my company name or create new account in my name?

Additionally, is there a more simple guideline for posting this bio without going down a rabbit hole of redirects? I understand the need for rules and clarity but I fear making the simplest of mistakes in doing it the first time will lead to being blocked from editing it. It all seems so confusing or maybe I am stupid. GreenwoodDriveEnt (talk) 19:23, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really understand? Your current account should be fine. If it does follow WP:NPOV and you disclose you were paid (see WP:PAID) you should be fine Chacabangaso (talk) 19:25, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And ofc following WP:GNG Chacabangaso (talk) 19:25, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @GreenwoodDriveEnt, welcome to the Teahouse. The best thing to do (after declaring per WP:PAID) is to click on WP:AfC, read that page, then click on the blue Click here to start a new article button, which will walk you through the process.
One word of warning - you should never create an account which uses your company name, unless you add something to identify you specifically (i.e. "Jane Doe at Company Name"). Since this account does seem to use the name of a company, I'd highly recommend requesting a rename via the process outlined at WP:Changing username. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 19:30, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Valuable feedback! GreenwoodDriveEnt (talk) 22:34, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, GreenwoodDriveEnt. No, you are not stupid, but you have in all likelihood taken on a task for which you are unprepared. Wikipedia is unlike almost anything else on the internet, and writing for Wikipedia is unlike most forms of writing, especially publicity. The task you are proposing is not "posting a bio", it is "writing an encyclopaedia article". Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.
My advice to new editors wanting to create a new article is always to spend a few weeks or months learning how Wikipedia works by making small improvements to existing articles, before even trying it. Then read Your first article.
There is no connection between the name of an account and any articles that that account works on. (Note that the account which creates an article has absolutely no ownership of that article: almost anybody in the world may edit almost any article. A notable exception is that editors should not directly edit any article with which they have a conflict of interest - and paid editors must not do so). Your account must be personal to you, and may not bear somebody else's name, or have a name which suggests it is editing on behalf of an organisation. If GreenwoodDriveEnt is a version of the name of a company, you should change it (though eg "Joe at GreenwoodDrive" would be acceptable). ColinFine (talk) 22:19, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey all, newbie here.

Just writing a post for a gaming tournament that myself and some friends created and we want to document it somewhere public to remember by and for future generations to add too. However I can't quote or provide sources as all the facts and comments are internal for us and won't appear anywhere on the internet, bar maybe social media.

Hi @TheMonk84, welcome to the Teahouse. The short answer is: you don't. Wikipedia articles are summaries of what has been published in independent, reliable, secondary sources about a subject. There are many places on the internet where you can document the history of something which doesn't meet our rather high standards - see WP:Other outlets. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:25, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting to obsolete article title

What can be done for someone reverting edits that correct obsolete article title link? It concerns the Hungary National Football Team. Hungarian national football team is an obsolete title.104.35.235.197 (talk) 00:27, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're changing the link "Hungarian national football team" to the link "Hungary national football team". But the former is anyway a redirect to the latter, and they mean the same thing. If either of them was/is a name, then it doesn't look that way. (If "Hungarian national football team" had been intended as a name, I'd expect it to instead be "Hungarian National Football Team".) And therefore both seem fine, and both work. So I don't know why your edits are being reverted, but I also don't know why you'd want to make them in the first place; and all in all I don't know what's problematic here. -- Hoary (talk) 00:57, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You should read the discussion cited about adjuncts. So you are in favor of maintaining obsolete article titles?
