Biography
She was born in Wichita, Kansas, USA. Mata parents was Vera and William Wesley Brown. She spent most of her youth in Southern California. From early age she showed a interest in religion, regularly attending church with her family. She was drawn to the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda at the age of fourteen, after hearing him speak at the SRF Temple in San Diego, California, which her sister and mother had begun attending. Mata came to live at the SRF Hermitage in Encinitas, California, June 10, 1946, where she finished her final years of high school and simultaneously began receiving Yogananda’s guidance. She entered the SRF monastic community in 1946, at the age of fifteen. He chose for her the monastic name “Mrinalini,” signifying the purity of the lotus flower, an ancient symbol of spiritual unfoldment.[2] Following the passing of former president Daya Mata in 2011 (official announcement), she became president of the society until her death.[3] Her mother later also entered the ashram, took the monastic name Meera Mata.
