Colin Moriarty (born 14 October 1984) is an internet personality and game developer from Long Island, New York, USA. He was formerly known as an IGN PlayStation editor, long-time co-host of Podcast Beyond, and a co-founder of online entertainment company Kinda Funny, before founding Last Stand Media.

Career

While studying history at Northeastern University, Moriarty was recruited to join IGN as a freelance guide writer in 2002 due to his contributions to GameFAQs.[1] In 2007, Moriarty joined IGN permanently as an intern. In 2010, he was promoted to the position of PlayStation editor, and in 2013, became a senior editor.[2] During his IGN employment, he became known for his reviews, editorials and long-form features on video game studios, including Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions, as well as a co-host on Podcast Beyond. Moriarty gained fans for bringing a perspective on history and politics to video games commentary, and was later a repeat guest on The Joe Rogan Show, the Glenn Beck Radio Program and The Rubin Report to discuss social issues within the games industry.[3][4][5]

Along with then IGN editor Greg Miller, Moriarty created The GameOverGreggy Show in 2013 as a side project, following the popularity of their series A Conversation With Colin on Greg's personal YouTube channel. IGN video producers Nick Scarpino and Tim Gettys also joined the web series soon after and in 2014 launched a Patreon under the name Kinda Funny, which received $10,000 in funding within the first 24 hours.[6] On January 5, 2015, the Kinda Funny co-founders left IGN to expand the company into an entertainment venture covering topics that had previously been off-limits due to conditions with IGN, including video games, film and TV.[7] The new company was funded primarily through viewer support and crowdfunding on Patreon.[8]

On March 13, 2017, Moriarty announced his resignation from the company, citing a difference in creative vision with the rest of the co-founders. His departure also followed a public outcry over a joke he posted on Twitter that was viewed to be controversial and sexist. [9] Moriarty immediately launched his own Patreon-funded company, Colin’s Last Stand (now Last Stand Media), with an initial focus on political and social commentary. The company surpassed $20,000 in monthly Patreon pledges within its first month,[10] and as of January 2022 is among the most successful companies on the platform, with more than 12,000 monthly subscribers.[11]

Moriarty returned to video game content on the CLS YouTube channel in November 2017, launching the web series SideQuest [12] and soon after Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast with co-host Chris “Ray Gun” Maldonado.[1] Despite leaving IGN in 2015, Moriarty continues to be close to key sources in the games industry and is known to break news, including details about the unreleased Bioshock sequel and a cancelled Resistance sequel.[13][14][15]

Personal life

Moriarty is dating YouTuber and content creator Micah Watson, also known as Mama Micah, who works at Last Stand Media.

He has an Italian-Irish background and although he was raised Catholic, has identified as an atheist since his teenage years.

Moriarty is known for expressing openly conservative views in a predominantly left wing games industry, and is a self-described libertarian and a lapsed Republican party supporter.[4] As an early proponent of same-sex marriage and other socially progressive views, Moriarty supported Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidential election, then backed Mitt Romney as a candidate in 2012. After officially leaving the Republican party in 2016, Moriarty elected to vote for independent candidate Gary Johnson in the 2016 US election.[4]
