2013 AFL premiership season | |
---|---|
Teams | 18 |
The 2013 Australian Football League season will be the 117th season of the Australian rules football competition.
The season will be opened on 22 March with Adelaide hosting Essendon[1], and is scheduled to conclude on 28 September with the AFL Grand Final.
Pre-season
Draft
The 2012 National Draft will be held on 22 November on the Gold Coast.[2]
Premiership season
Some of the highlights of the 2013 AFL season will include:
- For the second consecutive year, the AFL's Opening Round will be spread across two weekends, and for the first time ever, across eleven days.[3]
- Due to concern over one-sided matches, each of the top four teams from 2012 (Sydney, Hawthorn, Adelaide and Collingwood) will play each of the bottom four teams (the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney) only once each – except for Sydney, which will play local rival Greater Western Sydney twice.[4]
- A match for premiership points will be played outside Australia for the first time, when St Kilda and Sydney meet at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand in Round 5.[5]
- Port Adelaide will host the final regular-season match at AAMI Stadium, with both Adelaide and Port Adelaide to start playing at a redeveloped Adelaide Oval from the 2014 season.[citation needed]
