I don't have a lot of time right now, but could someone add my old friend Adrian to the list of deceased editors? User:Adrian~enwiki is the account he used to edit under, real life article about them at Adrian Lamo. He died in 2018, and had about 5,000 edits on his account. — <span style="color:#49086B">Moe</span> <span style="color:#49086B">Epsilon</span> 00:29, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I posted a query on that user's talk page. They have not edited here since July 2018, but I found a possibly related obituary notice from August 2018. Experienced editors here might like to take a look, at some point, and come to a view. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:36, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Adding image to an entry
User:FDLeyda appears to have passed on in September 2019 according to online obituaries. Could someone make he relevant notices etc? I've read the guidelines but I'm not sure how to do many of the things it suggests. Thank you! MarchOfTheGreyhounds (talk) 11:13, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

I had added an image to the entry for JarrahTree as they would not have wanted a photo of themselves published. They were a long-standing member and board member of our community, but another user has removed it without comment. As this is my first time posting an obituary, I'm assuming I have done something wrong? Could someone let me know why it might not have been appropriate for me to use the image? Thank you in anticipation. AlphaLemur (talk) 08:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
"Edge case" question
:It's OK ... I'm blind so obviously am not the best person to comment directly, but I'd say that no image at all is better than anything besides an image of the person in a case like this. I made a further edit to the obituary (among others) because it's not just Wikimedia Australia that will mourn his loss but the entire Wikipedia community. The politics between the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia chapters can be interesting but that's a completely different topic. For now, know that I can probably speak for everyone here in saying that we'd much rather you let the community here know (as you did) than been less bold out of fear of doing something wrong. Just know that obituaries on these pages can and will be edited, just like almost anything else on this site. Graham87 (talk) 09:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
::@AlphaLemur: Yes, as Graham surmises, an image of the WMAU logo does not really add anything to the obituary, and arguably detracts from what is clearly a very heartfelt remembrance of a great editor. If you'd like to include some image that is particular to JarrahTree while respecting their privacy, like a photo they took, I'd have no objection to that. But also there's nothing wrong with the obituary having no photo at all; a majority don't. <span style="font-family:courier"> -- <span style="color:#E6007A">Tamzin</span></span>&#91;<i style="color:#E6007A">cetacean needed</i>] <small>(they&#124;xe&#124;🤷)</small> 09:32, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
:::I'm not going to add it myself, obviously, but the above comment brought to mind that the article about his username-sake tre has this image uploaded by him, taken in a part of Western Australia that I know was very dear to him. Something like that would be much better, I would say. Graham87 (talk) 09:39, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
::::Thanks @Graham87 and @Tamzin for taking the time to explain. I'll leave it for now and let someone else add an image if they want to. jarrahtree would actually be the first person I'd turn to ask for advice in these situations, so I was feeling at a bit of a loss. thanks again. AlphaLemur (talk) 09:56, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
:::: I like Graham87's suggestion of adding the photograph of a jarrah tree, particularly since in my opinion it is a rather beautiful picture. It is a photograph taken by the editor "JarrahTree", as well as illustrating the origin of the username they chose. Would anyone else like to express an opinion? JBW (talk) 21:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
:::: I also like that idea. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:09, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
:::::I really like this idea too. I've added the image. Say that User:Example dies. User:Example's brother states that yes, Example is dead, but then says he now assumes responsibility of the User:Example account. What happens in this case? Is the account listed at Category:Deceased Wikipedians or is a note placed on the user page about the situation? 172.112.210.32 (talk) 03:33, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
:That sounds like a compromised account. How do we even know Example is dead? Wikipedia accounts are meant to be one person each; no sharing or passing on a registered account. A block would be in order. <span class="nowrap" style="font-family:copperplate gothic light;"><span style="color:#345">Chris Troutman</span> (<span style="color:#345">talk</span>)</span> 10:52, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
::Chris troutman In general a lock would be more desirable as it would prevent the account being used on any project by anyone. But I could be getting too "in the weeds" here. <span style="color:#FF9933; font-weight:bold; font-family:monotype;">The</span><span style="color:#009933; font-weight:bold;">SandDoctor</span> <span style="color:#009933;">Talk</span> 23:43, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
:::Okay, might need to clarify. In this case User:Example's brother would ideally have already announced prior to User:Example's death that he and Example were related. Also, would it still be any different if Example's brother did not have an account, or if Example stated his Wikipedia account would be put into the hands of Example's brother in their will along with that? 172.112.210.32 (talk) 02:01, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
:::: There is no "responsibility" for the account of another individual. If Example's brother wishes to edit Wikipedia, he can easily create his own account. We do not allow editors to trade on the reputation of their friends or family members. As WP:SHAREDACCOUNT makes clear, shared accounts can only exist with the permission of the WMF, and only for non-editing purposes. Quistisffviii I see that you've added an entry for TomCat4680. I see you're from around the same area, so if you knew him personally, I'm sorry for your loss. You didn't add any link to an obituary, but with a little Googling I think I've found one; it mentions his Wikipedia editing. Speaking of RexxS: that person has not edited any Wikimedia sites since late February 2021 and on the talk page, there are people who hope he will come back to edit. There's no indication on if that user has retired or taken a wikibreak etc.. His real name can be found from Commons via a category where there is the photo where the cropped version is found here in this section. At present I can't seem to find any clues from external links as to what really happened to RexxS but I would think someone would have told the community if RexxS is currently a deceased Wikimedian, as in the case of PiZero. I'm still not sure if a photo-match only is enough, though. <span class="nowrap"> <span style="font-family:courier">-- <span style="color:#E6007A;">Tamzin</span></span>[<span style="color:#E6007A;">cetacean needed</span>] (she&#124;they&#124;xe)</span> 04:42, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
:::Seems possible based on the comment on the post what I think Centerone was referring to and the picture on Twitter implys he could be the same person. Has anyone asked the owner of the linked profile though - that method was used to confirm that in April 2019 that Ronhjones suddenly passed away by a one-to-one chat with one of the Wikipedia users and Ron's Facebook friend. ::::I've looked further. Sadly, I think Centerone is correct:
::::* There's a post here from screenname Darxus, using the surname Barwell.
::::* Nathan Barwell's LinkedIn, using a profile pic that was featured in the Facebook posts, gives location Pelham, New Hampshire, same as https://darxus.livejournal.com/profile
::::* "Rethinking OpenPGP PKI and OpenPGP Public Keyserver" lists "Nathan Barwell" as an author in its metadata (if that link is opened while logged-out to academia.edu, but not while logged-in... weird). The paper doesn't mention any Barwell but does cite Darxus' website.
::::I don't see a need to bother anyone grieving. I'll protect the userpage and notify the stewards. Can someone put together a brief entry? Per a Facebook comment, looks like he died in mid-Decemeber 2021. <span class="nowrap"> <span style="font-family:courier">-- <span style="color:#E6007A;">Tamzin</span></span><sup>[<span style="color:#E6007A;">cetacean needed</span>]</sup> (she&#124;they&#124;xe)</span> 10:31, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
:::::Done - in the 2021 list of entries. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 10:46, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Jaknouse

[edit]

User:Jaknouse passed away in 2021. There is an obituary here. gnu57 06:24, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I've tagged the account and requested a global lock from the Stewards at Meta-Wiki. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:21, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have written [[a quick obituary, as I recognised his username from early page histories. Graham87 (talk) 08:42, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding image to an entry

[edit]

I had added an image to the entry for JarrahTree as they would not have wanted a photo of themselves published. They were a long-standing member and board member of our community, but another user has removed it without comment. As this is my first time posting an obituary, I'm assuming I have done something wrong? Could someone let me know why it might not have been appropriate for me to use the image? Thank you in anticipation. AlphaLemur (talk) 08:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's OK ... Graham87 (talk) 09:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AlphaLemur: Yes, as Graham surmises, an image of the WMAU logo does not really add anything to the obituary, and arguably detracts from what is clearly a very heartfelt remembrance of a great editor. If you'd like to include some image that is particular to JarrahTree while respecting their privacy, like a photo they took, I'd have no objection to that. But also there's nothing wrong with the obituary having no photo at all; a majority don't. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 09:32, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to add it myself, obviously, but the above comment brought to mind that the article about his username-sake tre has this image uploaded by him, taken in a part of Western Australia that I know was very dear to him. Something like that would be much better, I would say. Graham87 (talk) 09:39, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Graham87 and @Tamzin for taking the time to explain. I'll leave it for now and let someone else add an image if they want to. jarrahtree would actually be the first person I'd turn to ask for advice in these situations, so I was feeling at a bit of a loss. thanks again. AlphaLemur (talk) 09:56, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like Graham87's suggestion of adding the photograph of a jarrah tree, particularly since in my opinion it is a rather beautiful picture. It is a photograph taken by the editor "JarrahTree", as well as illustrating the origin of the username they chose. Would anyone else like to express an opinion? JBW (talk) 21:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also like that idea. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:09, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I really like this idea too. I've added the image. Vertical space on WP:RIP entries is always an issue, though, so it might be good to crop out the asphalt at the bottom. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 23:32, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TomCat4680

[edit]

@Quistisffviii: I see that you've added an entry for TomCat4680 (talk · contribs). I see you're from around the same area, so if you knew him personally, I'm sorry for your loss. You didn't add any link to an obituary, but with a little Googling I think I've found one; it mentions his Wikipedia editing. Do you know if he was open about his real name on-wiki, or if he would have preferred it not be linked? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 00:37, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tamzin He was very private about his real name being used online and that was why I did not cite the obit. He was a good friend. Thank you. Quistisffviii (talk) 01:02, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll leave it as-is then. I privately sent the obit to a steward, who locked his account, which is the most important administrative step, since it prevents accounts from being compromised at some later date. Again, sorry for your loss. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 01:08, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
