#REDIRECT Best Friend
A best friend may be a chosen friend with whom one shares a deeper level of understanding, trust, and affection than most others one is close to. A best friend may be of the same sex or of the opposite sex. It may also simply be the friend whom one feels is closest or most loyal.

Best friends usually share and enjoy the same activities; in fact, they often meet while doing an activity that they enjoy and this is the common ground on which the friendship is founded. Best friends often trust each other with information that they would not share with anyone else. Often, best friends will be so close that they will consider themselves as brothers or sisters, depending on their sex.

Someone who is a friend of a particular person who has another 'best friend' may become jealous of that person, particularly if the person is older and different genders are involved.

In some other cultures, such as Russia, the term "friend" is strong enough to qualify as "best friend" in the West. See the Cultural variations of friendship section for more information.

Best friends forever
Recent terminology can include "best friends forever", or "BFF" in its abbreviated form. BFFs are pairs of men who pledge a lifelong partnership of friendship and trust. Often, there are rituals that men follow to declare their "BFFdom". This is similar to blood brothers in which boys will intentionally cut their fingers and press the cuts together, metaphorically sharing their blood. More recent developments, possibly due to fear of an AIDS pandemic has resulted in some men using crossing streams as a method to ritually begin their "BFFdom".-->
