France in 1713 ceded its settlements in Newfoundland and Acadia to the British. France retained the islands in the Gulf of St Lawrence, primarily what is today Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. Second edit. German and Swedes did not settle alongside the French at Port Royal. Germans do not arrive in Nova Scotia until the 1750s and they settle at Halifax and Lunenburg.
