Etymology

edit

From ham +‎ shire (county), from Old English Hāmtūnsċīr. The 'p' evolved phonetically between [m] and [sh], as with Thompson.

The community in Prince Edward Island is named after the county in England. The name was inspired by nearby Wiltshire.
