Rename...?

Since this template (and {{Loss}}) are now appearing in {{Infobox Country}} templates to indicate an increase or decrease in countries' yearly HDI, perhaps the more generic names {{Increase}} and {{Decrease}} might be more suitable for these templates (keeping {{Profit}} and {{Loss}} as redirects)...?  Regards, David Kernow (talk) 00:52, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Usage advice regarding {{profit}} and {{loss}}

I'm glad profit now redirects here, however I would argue for a notice to say not to use {{profit}} at all, because as far as I can see it is being used incorrectly. i.e. when a company makes 200 million in one year and 100 million the next {{profit}} is being used (i.e. to say it is still a positive) when of course decrease should be used. increase of negative things

How do we handle increase of negative things? (e.g. in a ranking of failed states?
I would suggest that we create a new template with a green arrow pointing down and a red arrow pointing up. What do you think? --Spitzl 11:03, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Replace unicode symbol by an icon with alt text

{{editprotected}} Unicode symbols are not accessible, as most of them are read by screen readers as a question mark (unrecognized). Even when they are, the textual alternative is quite generic, and does not always convey the meaning intended. For example, in this case it would be read as "down arrow" instead of "decrease".

The MoS guideline at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (accessibility)#Text says such symbols should be replaced by an icon with alt text. This guideline was established after the discussion at WT:ACCESS#Non standard ASCII, and consensus was reached to replace such symbols by an icon with alt text.

This change does not have any effect on the layout, or the rendering of the symbol, thus is believed to be consensual. I request to replace: ▲

<span style="color: #0c0; font-size: larger;">▲</span>

by:

[[File:Increase2.svg|11px|alt=increase|link=]]

File:Increase2.svg is in public domain because it is ineligible for copyright (simple geometry), thus the image doesn't require attribution and it is acceptable to remove the link.

Mouseover

Would it be possible to incorporate a mouseover feature into this template and into its siblings, Template:Steady and Template:Decrease, so that when one hovers over them with the cursor they'll say "Increase," "Steady" and "Decrease"?—Biosketch (talk) 08:35, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Confusing

Unnamed parameter for delta

I created a sandboxed verion of the template with support for delta numbers as tooltips (to be specified in first unnamed parameter). Rise vs increase

Is there a specific reason for the two templates {{rise}} and {{increase}}, seemingly serving the same purpose, or should they be merged? I have to say that {{rise}} indicates the direction more clearly. --Eleassar ^{my talk} 10:06, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Is there a clever way to add hidden characters to the HTML code so that table cells using these templates sort correctly?

For example, clicking the sorting icons in the table on the right seems to order the values randomly.

Rank/mov't indicator arrows

The documentation does not provide any clear guidance on when {{IncreaseNegative}} () and {{DecreasePositive}} () should be used, as opposed to {{increase}} () and {{decrease}} (). The fact that all of the templates share the same documentation only adds to the confusion of which one to use when. For example, some pages have used and in infoboxes to indicate changes in ranking when they really should use and instead — see Template:Infobox website: Put {{Increase}} () OR {{Steady}} () OR {{Decrease}} () BEFORE the ranking number to indicate the change of ranking compared with the previous month. PrimeHunter mentioned a good example when and would be appropriate, where an increase is a bad thing (indicated by red): List of motor vehicle deaths in U.S. by year Can the documentation be updated to give examples of appropriate uses? —sroc (talk) 03:58, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Just a simpler method for adding title attributes. Template:Increase/testcases covers all five templates.

Increase or decrease "neutral" missing

Excellent idea to have these signs. However, sometimes, increase (or decrease) is neutral in nature (e.g. labor force due to demographic trends). It would be nice to have also colorless triangles (i.e. trend signs) in that case. Cheers. 47.17.20.247 (talk) 01:51, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Size parameter

New template available for automatically formatting a value

I have just created Template:Fluctuation formatter (I'm somewhat surprised it didn't already exist; hopefully it wasn't hidden somewhere), which takes a value and returns it along with an appropriate sign based on whether it's positive/negative/neutral. You can see an example usage at {{Infobox U.S. college admissions}}. It may be difficult to retrofit into existing use cases that have required editors at pages to manually enter the appropriate symbol, but it should be preferable when designing new infoboxes/etc. going forward. Would be great to have a percent change automation, similar to what exists in population templates. Make it so the arrow and number do not wrap

I would like that the number can not wrap below the arrow as the screen narrows. This occasionally happens.

It would be nice if this was the default, so that people don't have to use a parameter.

Right now some people are putting "nowrap" in the styling before those {{increase}} {{decrease}} {{steady}} data cells. And not just for the verbiage after the number. Sometimes just for the arrow and number. --Timeshifter (talk) 06:40, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
