History

Due to the over crowding at Socastee High School, and the growth and development in the South Myrtle Beach area, Horry County School officials decided to build a new high school in the Burgess area of the county. The county wanted to open South Strand High School, but a group of students, parents and community leaders formed a committee to select the school name, colors, and mascot. St. James High School opened to students in 2003. St. James opened with 700 students, which did not include a senior class. [2] [3]

Academics

St. James offers 9 Advanced Placement classes along with a wide variety of honors classes and a dual enrollment program with Horry-Georgetown Technical College. The English Department produces the Shark Attack school newspaper, and the Echoes yearbook. [4]

In the spring of 2006, the Girls Softball Team entered the history books as they won the first State Championship for St. James High School. Since then St. James has added 4 state track champions, 2007, 2008, 2009, 4x400 Meter Relay and in 2009, Brunson Miller won the 400 Meters. In 2011, John VanSlooten won the 140 lb. Weight Class and added the first State Championship in Wrestling. The varsity boys baseball team also won the AAA State Championship in 2011. In 2012, John VanSlooten won the 145 lb.
